Xbox One’s Snap Mode Is No More

Posted on January 25, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

Microsoft’s Xbox One console will lose its once touted Snap feature in the next major dashboard update in order to streamline performance. Snap allowed users to use a minimalized version of apps such as a live television guide while watching TV, bring up internet explorer or bring up friend lists or other social functions.

Explaining on twitter, Xbox honcho Mike Ybarra stated that this move will lead to overall system performance and speed by freeing up resources.

Microsoft is currently testing the next version of the Xbox Dashboard Software via the recently implemented Xbox One Preview program. The next version of the system is currently being rolled out in waves, meaning that even if you sign up right now you might not get access right away. This new major version of the Xbox One’s OS is expected to become available on retail consoles when the Windows 10 Creators Update be released to mainstream PC users this coming April

In addition to the new multitasking support the new OS also includes a new guide that includes recently played games, recently used apps and online contacts. Here’s a look:

If you are wondering how the Snap feature works on current retail Xbox One consoles check out the original trailer for it, released back in 2013:

Tom Clancy’s The Division 1.6 Patch Notes Released Ahead of New Expansion

Posted on January 21, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

The streets of the desolated New York City in Tom Clancy’s The Division seemed barren for months until this falls 1.4 patch which saw thousands of agents descend into the chaos filled streets once more thanks to a number of positive changes to the game by Ubisoft & Massive Entertainment. Now the devs hope to not only retain players but provide lapsed agents with even more of a reason to come back to the game as they drop the next paid expansion – Last Stand.

Manhattan’s Dark Zone was supposed to be a bit of a WildWest with the possibility of rogue agents killing you and enhanced NPCs that safeguard some of the games’ most coveted loot. Unfortunately the experience never quite lived up to this promise – thanks in part of a number of folks using auto-aim and other hacks on PC and players trepidation in fighting each other, many simply felt that grouping up together would provide a better experience than facing off versus one another.

With 1.6 Dark Zone areas 7 through 9 will finally be available for agents who are the appropriate level / gear level. These brand new modes will function like the existing Dark Zones 1 –6 with new groups of roaming enemies, new landmarks and a challenging progression that increases in difficulty the further north your agent wanders in DZ 7 thru 9. Massive Entertainment will also finally allow us to fast travel between Dark Zone entry locations – rather than traveling to the closest safe house.

Here’s an interesting little quote from the official dev blog about how extraction has changed in the new Dark Zone areas:

The new Landmarks can have multiple waves of enemies spawning after you’ve killed the initial NPC enemies. Clearing Landmarks will now award you with additional loot placed directly into your inventory, bypassing the need to extract it.

Alongside these new Dark Zone areas are brand new contaminated areas where your built-in filter will not be able to completely protect you. Players will have to manage their health as well as their ammunition stocks if they’re going to be able to take out the unique Elite Cleaner NPCs that will spawn in the new contained zones before their health runs out. Elite Cleaners will be a world spawn that will occur in the new Dark Zones approximately every hour or so.

A new difficulty is also coming for those players who feel that they might have mastered all of the challenges and activities that the base game has to offer. The legendary difficulty is designed to be the hardest challenge on offer within Tom Clancy’s The Division and will challenge even those who have completed the Heroic Incursions. Legendary difficulty will be available on three specific missions initially: WarrenGate Power Plant, Napalm Production Site and Times Square.

Here is how Ubisoft described the new Heroic content which has been re-worked from the ground up to provide a challenging experience:

You won’t be fighting the same enemies you usually fight in those missions, though. All the previous content has been taken out and replaced with new, powerful and much smarter LMB enemies that use more advanced tactics against you and your team.

Head on to the Ubisoft Blog over for exhaustive details about Tom Clancy’s The Division V1.6 including more details about the Dark Zone enhancements, difficulty levels and Gear Set changes that will affect all characters regardless of level or expansion pass. The devs also went through a lot of detail surrounding the upcoming changes to skill power and how that will affect the healing meta currently used by the community, if you are a serious player it is certainly worth the read.

Lego City Undercover Spies On Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PS4 and PC This Spring

Posted on January 12, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

Warner Bros Interactive is assigning their veteran LEGO cop Chase McCain to another adventure through LEGO City with the current generation re-release of 2013’s previously Wii U exclusive LEGO City Undercover.

LEGO City Undercover is an open world city exploration titles that allows players to guide McCain through 20 unique districts filled with both minor crimes, collectables and story missions to keep the detective busy.  Over 100 different vehicles roam the streets of LEGO City with a number of different categories including motorcycles, helicopters, sports cars, trucks and some truly exotic rides.  LEGO City Undercover wouldn’t do the franchise justice without dozens of movie references and allusions to pop culture that allow the LEGO games to be enjoyed by gamers of all ages.

We reviewed the original Wii U version back in 2013, Here is a sample of what Les Major had to say about that version:

It’s hard to find faults with this game. I loved it! For long time gamers or youth, there is content to be enjoyed here. From movie parodies, to just the comedy in general, the writing is fun, clever, and keeps you interested throughout the game.

Make sure to check out the embedded trailer below for the cross platform version:

Dead Rising 4 Changes Are Awesome For Casual Fans

Posted on December 7, 2016 by Les Major

Dead Rising 4 Promo

I’ve seen a lot of complaints online addressing the changes made to Dead Rising 4 and in some ways I get how hardcore fans must feel. I admit, Dead Rising 3 for me was an accomplishment. When I took down a psychopath, I felt powerful! Like somehow I’d beaten the odds and finished off a boss that I had no right clearing with my skills.

The fourth entry in the series is very much different, but I like it for being it’s own thing. I still remember fighting my way through those impossible odds and beating a difficult boss in the first Dead Rising. Then I ran out of time and had to start all over again, thankfully carrying my leveling up over to my next play through. Still, I’m pretty sure the bosses came back again. That impossible mountain that I’d climbed had returned. I don’t think you had to beat them during a playthrough, but it was just one of those things.

Much of that has changed. There is no time limit anymore. For many, that created quite an outcry. On the other hand, you have this large sandbox town with side quests to explore and collectables to discover. So Dead Rising 4 could be just the game you’re looking for. The problem many gamers have is that it’s different. It’s something they were used to and it’s been removed. Quite honestly, I’ve seen a similar response from some of my friends who are playing Pokémon Sun or Moon. Gyms have been swapped out in that series for trials now. It’s on the surface not that much of a difference, but even a smaller change that didn’t really alter gameplay that much frustrated some fans.

In Dead Rising 4, the changes are more significant. But it all depends on your perspective if they’re better or worse. It would take a lot of programming and possibly some balancing, but it’s a shame both styles of gameplay couldn’t have been included. There is something to be said about the more relaxed and explorative style of this latest release. Having it as a casual mode potentially would have been a way to please everyone.

For me and my friends, it’s actually a welcome change. Instead of having to backtrack through content over and over, you have a steady sense of progress in Dead Rising 4. I’m not about to run out of time and have to go back to the beginning. Instead I’m mowing down crowds of literally hundreds of zombies on screen at once and getting to take my time doing it. If I want to stay in one area and level up, that’s totally an option. I don’t need to worry about muscling my way through the story again.

On top of all that you have more inventory space and bosses do seem significantly easier. It’s either that or I’ve just been armed to the teeth when I’ve met up with some of them. If anything out of it all, maybe the bosses could be a bit tougher. I just finished the second case in the game and the boss I was fighting seemed to have many healing items scattered about. Don’t get me wrong, if I wasn’t paying attention and backing off from the fight I’m sure I could have gotten Frank totaled.

Is the game difficult? No, no really, at least not so far. Is the game fun? Well, yeah! I wish there were even more areas to go inside of out in the town, but there are interiors to explore. I haven’t even touched on multiplayer yet. So it may not be your usual Dead Rising, but it may be something different that you’ll really enjoy!

I feel like I’ve been saying that a lot this season. Call Of Duty: Infinite Warfare had the same sort of reception to some. Yes a lot of fans were angered by having to buy the remaster of Modern Warfare along with the new game. Others didn’t care for the sci-fi setting. Really I said the same thing for Infinite Warfare that I’m saying here, if it wasn’t a part of a series we wouldn’t be having this conversation. On their own rights, Dead Rising 4 and Infinite Warfare are awesome games that I love! I just feel bad for the fans that are dedicated to the franchises that were expecting something different. I’ve been there before too. I’d dreamed of NEW Super Mario Bros 2 being based on Super Mario Bros 2 USA which it wasn’t. I watched the Secret of Mana series change and evolve over time into something I didn’t really recognize anymore. I do understand where everyone is coming from.

If you want a zombie game with a holiday theme, tons of weapons you’re used to from the Dead Rising series, and a sandbox town to explore during an outbreak, you’ve got a great title here. I still remember on my gameplay stream having a friend in the chat comment about the Black Friday sale being out of control. Well, yeah, it even is Black Friday when the outbreak happened. So there are still banners for the sales hanging up in the mall.

I’m not hyping the game under any obligation. We do receive free review copies occasionally from publishers and Dead Rising 4 is one of those titles. That does not require us to give a positive review for a game. I honestly enjoy Dead Rising 4 and I hope you’ll give it a chance. Do your research and see what you think of the game. Maybe you’re not hardcore into the series and the concept of no time limit is a godsend to you! Well, have at it! This game is for you then!

Stay tuned for our full review of Dead Rising 4 in the coming days. I can tell you right now though that this is an enjoyable addition to the series.

Players and their group of chosen companions are able to take on hundreds of foes with 15 playable heroes across a multi hour campaign. During these tactical challenges The Dwarves will fight against armies of other fantasy races like orcs, zombies, dark wizards, elves and hordes of the undead. Developer KING ART promises that these battles will rattle player’s brains – they’ll have to plan out their next moves in real-time in order to overcome their foes.

Here are the recommended specs for the Windows PC version:

FFXV’s “Ready To Play” Partial Install Shows Flaws In Sony’s System

Posted on November 29, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Square Enix’s decade-in-development RPG Final Fantasy XV is now playable for those who have pre-loaded the titled on PlayStation 4 through the PlayStation Store. Like many other Final Fantasy fans I decided to go all digital with this latest title due to the fact that it would unlock at 10 PM EST and allow me to play several hours ahead of the release locally – plus I wouldn’t have to leave the house, which is a huge plus.

During the download of FFXV the PlayStation download manager will tell users that approximately 8GB of the game are required before the game is “ready to start”. I naively assumed that this “ready to start” download would allow me to play at least the first chapter of the game but just like last year’s Star Wars: Battlefront FFXV’s partial download is nothing more than an endless gauntlet against waves of enemies. If you have slower internet like I do you could be facing the prospect of fighting an endless horde of goblins for hours with little variation in content to keep you entertained.

So what’s the big issue? Well, when Sony announced the PlayStation 4 they positioned the “Ready To Start” as enabling the player to begin their gaming experience while waiting for the complete game to finish installing. Unfortunately in practise in many cases this mean’s the players either face endless hordes of enemies or other smaller slices of game-play that do not add to the overall experience with the completed game. Earlier in the system’s life-span launch games like Need For Speed: Rivals allowed players to start the campaign, as did Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. It is inexcusable that FFXV’s mandatory partial download does not contain any substantial content. If Sony is going to mandate that developers put in small slices of playable content while downloads finish they should take steps to ensure that they are entertaining.

I think Jim Sterling did a lot better in his lengthy video on the particular issues with the “Ready To Start” feature than I can in one news article:

Final Fantasy XV is now available for digital pre-load on PlayStation 4 and will be available at retail locations tomorrow for both PS4 and Xbox One.

Overwatch Sombra Blizzcon Print Leaks As Halloween Event Ends

Posted on November 1, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Remember that huge Overwatch leak from a few weeks back that confirmed Junkenstien’s revenge before its’ reveal and supposedly contained in-game character art for the mysterious Sombra? The character’s design has pretty much been confirmed thanks to an early leak of a Sombra art print that will be available on the Blizzcon Gear Store during next week’s convention.

The art piece in question was drawn by artist John Polidora who has worked as a Senior Concept Artist / Character Designer for Blizzard Entertainment since 2014 but he has been with the company in other roles since 2008. His credits include work as a character designer for Overwatch and modeling on World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade and World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Litch King.

As for Sombra’s design – she’s shown wearing the same purple leatherish outfit complete with amazing sidecut and Uzis. She seems to be channeling some kind of energy into a large omnic like the ones seen in the background of the volskaya industries map, this has lead to players hypothesizing that she might control armies of the robots and her Uzi is simply for protection up close – not unlike Mercy’s blaster.

Here is the art that leaked:

With the Halloween event ending today at 4PM PST do you think Blizzard will reveal Sombra tonight or wait until this weekend’s Blizzcon?

Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 | REVIEW

Posted on September 22, 2016 by Ellen McGrody

Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 follows up on its predecessors with a strange proposition. Imagine you’ve grown accustomed to driving a car without brakes. You hit other cars, you die, so you learn how to avoid doing so. You follow the road, you swerve correctly, you do fine, right? Then, one day, your car suddenly has brakes. And, when you hit other cars, it takes a couple hits before you actually crash. This would be disorienting, right? Because you’d have to completely relearn how to drive that car.

In Pac-Man Championship Edition 2, Pac-Man literally has a brake button.

Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 follows a recent tradition of modifying Pac-Man’s classic formula. Games like Pac-Man Battle Royale and Pac-Man 256 have proven that Pac-Man’s basic maze gameplay has a lot of unexplored depth, and the Championship Edition series has led the charge in showing off how interesting and unique Pac-Man can become.

As with its predecessors, Championship Edition 2 is gorgeous, with a blissful neon aesthetic and incredible techno music that will keep you going for hours of play. CE 2 takes advantage of its new position on next-gen hardware to deliver mind-bending visuals at a consistently high frame rate.

The game’s new 3D flourishes exemplify this, offering fluid animations as a new reward for skillful ghost busting. It’s not surprising that Namco’s sound team has outdone themselves, either, with clever sound effects and arguably the series’ strongest soundtrack.

ss_28b00aef0ac4379989821ace35b13fecf74c649e-1920x1080

In addition, fans of previous outings will find some of their favorite songs, like Pac Rainbow, left in tact, along with some series favorite mazes like Championship I & II, Highway, and Spiral. While the aesthetics remain the same, and callbacks to previous games will make series regulars feel at home, there’s a mountain of modifications to the gameplay that might not excite everyone.

From Pac-Man Championship Edition‘s release, Namco has shown it’s not afraid of changing Pac-Man in subtle ways. In the first Championship Edition, players initially play the game at the speed of the classics, collecting pellets and regenerating the maze’s layout as they collect fruit. DX changes things up a bit by allowing you to collect a “Ghost Train” rather than having to avoid the traditional four ghosts on the map.

Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 piles on new systems in a way that isn’t as satisfying as the natural evolution and simplicity found in the older titles. Pac-Man CE 2 adds, in no short order: Angry Ghosts, Boss Ghosts, a brake button, jumping, Ghost Routes, Runaway items, several new modes, and a compulsory tutorial just to cram all this in. It’s clear that Namco doesn’t want the series’ first proper numbered sequel to feel like a gentle iteration, but all of these revisions don’t gel with the simple gameplay of the original two titles.

ss_8dd5880aac1d228a7b25bd473fe5a6b0c9d402c7-1920x1080

Players who were looking for a game more similar to the original Championship Edition will be left out in the cold. CE 2 will feel more familiar to DX players who are used to chasing after Ghost Trains. In 2, rather than building up speed after collecting members of Pac-Man’s Ghost Train, the player starts off at full-speed, and any ghostly minions collected become trails behind the four main ghosts, Blinky, Inky, Pinky, and Clyde.

The challenge comes from chasing pellets at full-speed while avoiding both the roaming ghosts and their new trails. It’s a race against time, as before, trying to accumulate as many points as you possibly can before time runs out. At its strongest moments, CE 2 is a fast-paced score chaser that feels reminiscent of the gameplay offered by DX with some new and interesting twists.

ss_df9cd75e745987af2591d4dd1b32d959ed49dc43-1920x1080

Sometimes, those twists end up tangling up in one another and bog down the gameplay with undue complication. Changes pile upon each other and lead to series regulars needing to rethink their traditional CE play.

Grinding on the wall of the maze is still there, for instance, but because of Pac-Man’s increased speed and the unpredictable new behavior of ghosts, it doesn’t feel the same, and it’s something you typically want to avoid.

When eating ghosts, instead of going after the Ghost Train behind you in a satisfying finish, you’re sent on a frustrating chase after the four ghosts and their trains along Ghost Routes, colored escape routes that require memorization and constant attention.

ss_8ad3b4f7bae1310210131216569814a6a942565f-1920x1080

New rules constantly interrupt basic tenets of gameplay put in place by DX, and while offering something new can be fun, the amount of relearning necessary might be challenging to those who have been playing CE DX for the past six years.

If all these new details weren’t aggravating on their own, they’re paired with new modes that only serve to highlight the game’s shortfalls. As in prior outings, the game is rife with unlockables, but rather than simply mastering each maze to seek rewards, players must conquer a new mode, Adventure. Adventure fails to deliver the classic, simple fun of the traditional score attack mode, and most players will likely avoid it altogether.

pac-man-championship-edition-2-07-21-16-1

The new mode challenges players to complete several time attack missions in order to unlock Boss Battles, which are in themselves just a more challenging brand of time attack. Time attack isn’t very rewarding when failure is often found in having to battle stuff like Ghost Routes.

The process of completing stacks of time attack missions only to unlock even harder time attack missions isn’t rewarding, and if it weren’t for the promise of Galaga sprites for use within score attack, I probably wouldn’t have bothered. Within the context of 2, Adventure mode serves as an unfortunate annoyance.

Conclusion

By no means is Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 the weakest entry in the Pac-Man universe. At its best, Championship Edition 2 is fast and engrossing, pulling you in with engaging visuals and throbbing music. It’s a unique evolution on the classic arcade gameplay that you’d be hard-pressed to compare to its 1980 progenitor. Compared to its contemporaries, however, it lacks cohesion. At its worst, skillful play feels more like a wrestling match against new mechanics.

Pac-Man 256 and Pac-Man Championship Edition DX proved that you can iterate on the maze game formula without feeling overly complicated, without needing coercive tutorial levels, and without muddling what makes Pac-Man simple and fun to play. Mastery in titles like these is rewarded by a building sense of speed that motivates and excites.

Championship Edition 2 starts fast, stays fast, and ends with Pac-Man crashing into a wall of minions behind an Angry Ghost. If you’re ready to rethink the way you play Pac-Man, or you want to enjoy one of the best video game soundtracks this year, Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 is absolutely worth a shot, but you’d be remiss without playing stronger entries in the series first.

Rumor: New Armored Core 6 Under Development At ‘From Software’

Posted on September 14, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Out of the 2016 Tokyo Games Show comes a report that a new entry in the long running mech series Armored Core is in development courtesy of series creators From Software. Dualshockers supposedly spoke with Armored Core director Hidetaka Miyazaki who stated that work on the next entry in the franchise was under way.

Miyazaki didn’t reveal any other information about the new project. His work with the franchise began with 2005’s Armored Core: The Last Raven as a planner. He also directed both Armored Core 4 and Armored Core: For Answer on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Hidetaka Miyazaki is probably best known as the director of multiple Demon’s Souls titles as well as the original 2009 Dark Souls.

The last entry in the Armored Core franchise – Armored Core V – was released back in early 2012 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It was met with above average reviews – earning a 65% on the PlayStation 3 according to MetaCritic. I personally found the game’s take on the mech action genre to be fun, up until the difficulty ramped up around the mid point within the campaign.  After spending about a dozen or so hours on Armored Core V I eventually gave up and just traded the game back to GameStop.

Here’s hoping From Software have something awesome planned for the franchise – COME ON CROSS PLATFORM VR MECHS – and we will hear about it in 2017!

Sherlock Holmes comes to the Americas in October

Posted on September 12, 2016 by Jason Nason

Bandai Namco Entertainment announced today that they are partnering with Bigben Interactive to publish Sherlock Holmes: The Devil’s Daughter in North America.
