Rise of the Tomb Raider Coming To PlayStation In Holiday 2016

Posted on July 23, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

As it turns out the console exclusivity deal for Crystal Dynamic’s Rise of the Tomb Raider is simply a timed exclusive deal, something neither publisher Square Enix or Microsoft mentioned during the games numerous appearances at E3 2014, Gamescom 2014 or this past E3.

In a press release issued this morning Square Enix confirmed that Rise of the Tomb Raider will be released on Xbox One on November 10th this year, on Windows 10 PC / Steam sometime in early 2016 and finally on PlayStation 4 one year after the Xbox One version in Holiday 2016. Development duties for all versions is being handled by Crystal Dynamics.

In all honesty this kind of takes the wind right out of the word “exclusive” – sure we’ve seen other publishers, most notably Activision with time locked content in Destiny on PlayStation Platforms, lock away content for an unspecified amount of time. But this whole deal with Rise of the Tomb Raider is a bit different because Square & Microsoft failed to acknowledge that the game would ever come to other platforms although many in the industry expected that Rise would eventually make the jump.

Check out the E3 2014 trailer for Rise of the Tomb Raider below. We’ll probably hear more about the game at Gamescom this August.

Life Is Strange E3 Trailer

Posted on June 10, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Square Enix and developer Dontnod Entertainment have released a trailer for their episodic story-driven adventure game Life Is Strange.  This trailer features a brief look at some of the major events that have occurred during the last three episodes. A big warning though – alongside snippets of the critical acclaim that Life is Strange has received are major story spoilers for those who have not played the episodes released thus far.

I’ve played through all three episodes on PlayStation 4 and I absolutely fell in love with Life Is Strange by the end of the first episode. I found myself getting wrapped-up in the drama between the teenage cast – Dontnod spends a lot of time exploring the personalities and relationships between the various characters.  Episode 2 had such a major plot point that it sent me into tears and Episode 3 ended on such a surprise cliff hanger that it left me wanting more.

Without spoiling things you should check out Life Is Strange. Check out the trailer below.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Announced For Current Gen / PC

Posted on April 9, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Square Enix took the wraps off of the latest entry in the Deus Ex franchise this morning with the announcement of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC.  Human Revolution’s protagonist Adam Jensen returns in this latest cyberpunk action RPG set in the not-so distant future of 2029 – where the humankind is further divided between those who have cybernetic enhancements and those who do not.

This reveal was widely expected after Square’s #CantStopProgress marketing campaign kicked into gear three days ago with a mysterious twitch stream featuring individuals in solitary confinement. To be brutally honest I did not see the appeal in watching a fictionalized account of solitary confinement and torture to promote a videogame. Yet thousands of people did tuned into the twitch stream over the preceding 72 hrs… let’s remember that isolation in the prison system is a very real issue and to take the idea and use it for the promotion of a video game is beyond fucked up in my opinion.Read More

Unlisted Bravely Second: End Layer Trailer Found On SE YouTube Account

Posted on April 1, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

A brand new Japanese trailer for Bravely Second: End Layer has appeared on Square Enix Japan’s YouTube channel. Surprisingly the trailer is currently listed as a private video meaning that it is not currently indexed in the main YouTube gaming category. It is possible that the video was accidently uploaded prematurely so watch it in the embedded player before it gets taken down.

End Layer is the hotly anticipated sequel to last year’s surprise RPG hit Bravely Default for the Nintendo 3DS. Square has developed a few new systems to spice things up for players of the first game while keeping things familiar. Among these new developments is “consecutive chance” system which allows players to chain multiple encounters together with increasing difficulty for a chance at some really rare loot.

In terms of jobs End Layer will offer a whole host of awesome sounding jobs like Pirate, Ninja, Thief and some truly bizarre ones like the Catmaster.

It will be released in Japan on April 23rd.

New Trailer Shows Off FF-Type 0’s Combat Mechanics

Posted on January 27, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Straight from the world of Orience comes a brand new trailer for Final Fantasy Type-0 in the style of an in-universe news report. In this clip the announcer gives us the low down on the combat mechanics in this latest entry in the Final Fantasy series. 3 classmates fight alongside one another each of them possessing a special weapon. If one of your comrades dies in battle you are able to swap them out with one of your reserves classmates.

This action RPG looks absolutely fantastic – mixing combat system with a pretty neat elemental magic system this looks like a game that RPG fans will be playing for months. Final Fantasy Type-0 was originally released in 2011 for the PlayStation Portable in Japan. It was announced for the Xbox One and PS4 with upgraded visuals at last year’s E3 and will be available on Western shores on March 17th 2015.Read More

Posted on November 4, 2014 by Rae Michelle Richards

Square Enix’s latest MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV received a major patch last week with the release of version 2.4 – “Dreams of ICE”. This latest patch brings with it a brand new dungeon called Snowcloak, a hard version of Sastasha and The Sunken Temple for high level characters, the final Coil of Bahamut and most importantly two new jobs – Rogue and Ninja!

We may be slightly past the initial rush of players trying to level their Rogues to 50 but you can find many Ninjas in training amongst the ranks of U’Dah, Gradania and other major player hubs. If you want a full breakdown of 2.4 you can head on over to Square’s site for the full patch notes.

Heavensward! FFXIV: A Realm Reborn teases its first expansion

Posted on October 21, 2014 by Chelsea Richards

Square Enix has had one busy weekend, with the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival giving us lots of big news, with regards to its MMO that successfully relaunched last August under the same name. The new expansion is set to take place in Ishgard, which current players may remember scraping the surface of in the Coerthas Central Highlands. Alongside the typical features of  an increased level cap, and spells to go along with said increased cap, players are also earning the ability for their Free Companies (guilds) to construct their own airships. Also included are both a new Dark Knight job, and a currently unannounced race.

While we haven’t heard anything at the Las Vegas show with regards to the plans for the Golden Saucer and its implementation of Chocobo Racing, we are told that more information is to come from the London show on October 25th, and the Tokyo show from December 20th. Heavensward: Final Fantasy XIV is expected to go live in Spring of 2015.

Before then, however, is the release of patch 2.4 “Dreams of Ice” featuring the new primal fight of Shiva, while introducing players to the new class of Rogue and its job-extension into Ninja. Familiar bosses Typhon and Ultros and a few new dungeons are also expected to make appearances when this patch goes live on October 28th.Read More

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call Impressions

Posted on September 9, 2014 by Jason Nason

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call takes all of the beloved music from the Final Fantasy games and mashes them with a rhythm game and the result is pretty great, and pretty tough. The demo has released last week and I downloaded it to give it a whirl. I’ve been a longtime fan of Final Fantasy and love the music. How could I go wrong here.

Playing the game is simple enough. As with similar music rhythm games, the goal is to follow a melody line and tap or swipe at the right times. This is easier said than done, at least in the harder difficulties. Circles and lines pass from the left to the right of the screen. When you are presented with a circle on the screen, you tap when it reaches a certain circle mark on the screen. If you time it right you will get points, if you miss it then you will lose HP in your life bar. Run out of HP and the level is over.
