30 Minutes of New Final Fantasy XV Footage Highlight PS4 / Xbox Differences

Posted on August 28, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Square Enix posted thirty minutes of new direct-feed footage from the Japanese version of Final Fantasy XV to YouTube. To say that this footage is “new” might be a little subjective given that a large sections of this gameplay video were covered in Square’s 60 minute gamescom presentation a few weeks back.

So what makes this footage interesting to analyze? The GamesCom footage was taken from the English dub and this new footage comes from the Japanese version, allowing fans to analyze script differences. Portions of both demonstration videos were taken from a mixture of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One builds.

What differences have fans pointed out between the two? Here is a partial list of some of the main criticisms that some observers have pointed out:

  • Different dialogue and motion capture for some characters.
  • A dialogue wheel appears in the Japanese footage but does not appear in the English GamesCom build. (has this feature been cut?)
  • The Xbox One build runs at 752p in some of this footage.
  • Foliage does not appear to be completely implemented in some of the footage.
  • Object draw distance appears to be slightly less in the Xbox One build.
  • Number of objects on the Xbox One title screen is considerably less when compared to the PS4 version.
  • (Old footage vs new footage) – Chocobo area appears to be brighter and contain more foliage.

Want to see some of the differences in action? Here are some pictures comparing the various pieces of footage we’ve got from Square Enix between GamesCom and now. Keep in mind that these pieces of gameplay might be taken from a variety of different builds & platforms (PS4/Xbox One).

Square Enix Makes Final Fantasy XV Delay Official

Posted on August 15, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Square Enix announced during GamesCOM today that the rumored Final Fantasy XV delay is indeed official. The long awaited game will now make its debut on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One worldwide on November 29th, 2016. The publisher also announced that the delay of the game will not affect the digital release fo the tie-in film, KingsGlaive: Final Fantasy XV, which is set to debut at the end of the month.

What’s the reason for the delay? Well there was actually very little PR / Corporate speak in Square’s news release – they’ve admitted that the game needs more polish and QA testing before it is ready for prime time.

Final Fantasy XV

FFXV’s director Hajime Tabata is quoted regarding the two month release as saying:

“From the moment we joined this project, our vision was to create a level of freedom and realism previously unseen in the series. Regrettably, we need a little bit more time to deliver on this vision and are confident that this new release date will help us achieve this.”

Square’s admission that the game needs a bit more polish falls in line with a rumor that sprang up on 4-chan (unsourced of course (**ALSO POTENTIAL UNCONFIRMED SPOILER WARNINGS AT THAT LINK**) that claimed FFXV was only partially playable on production PlayStation 4 units. According to the leaker only about 2 hours was playable on PS4 and the Xbox One version faired even worse.

As soon as we know more about the delay of Final Fantasy XV we will let you know. I got the chance to play the Titan Demo at E3 and was generally impressed with what I played.

Final Fantasy XV began development as Final Fantasy Versus XIII and was announced more than 10 years ago at E3 2006!

The Third Party E3 2016 Booths In Pictures

Posted on June 20, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

E3 Logo

There were absolutely dozens upon dozens of booths with hundreds of interactive experiences for attendees to try. Fionna and I tried to see as many booths as we could and play as many games as humanly possible with only six hours of floor time per day. Here is a visual rundown of some of the 3rd party booths – so not Microsoft, Sony or other major console manufacturers – from both the North and South Hall.

IMG_1049

Just outside of the South Hall cafeteria was a small multi-part booth for the recently released 10 Cloverfield Lane. If you read my review of the film when it hit theatres last Spring you’ll know that I absolutely love the franchise. The booth in South Hall was complete with a functional jukebox and board games that attendees could play. A little odd for a movie to have a booth at E3 but hey it works.

IMG_1047

Near the back of the IndieCade booth in Sout Hall was a small game called _Transfer being demonstrated off of the main programmer’s laptop. This game has a sci-fi / cyberpunk feel and from the 10 minute demo that I played gave me the same kind of feelings that Analogue: A Hate Story gave him – memories and identity are at the core of this unique experience.

IMG_1046

The folks from Kona were at E3 also at the IndieCade booth, unfortunately all I saw was their laptop with a wallpaper. No developers were on hand for my time at the Indiecade booth 🙁

IMG_1042

A number of unique experiences were on offer at the IndieCade booth include a real life adventure game set in an 8 year old’s bedroom, indie titles like Inversus and it was one of the only spaces where people could sit together on an actual play together.

IMG_1040

Natsume had a medium sized booth complete with an inflatable tree, Harvest Moon demo-stations and the chance for fans to get some awesome swag provided that they play all four titles available at the booth.

Rebellion showcased Sniper Elite 4 in a pretty sweet lounge.

Capcom went all out for their E3 experience: A dilapidated demo theatre for the stealth announcement of Resident Evil 7, A replica of the actual courtroom from the Ace Attorney franchise complete with fans shouting “OBJECTION!”  and a playable demo of Dead Rising 4 being played alongside members of the Capcom Vancouver development team. Of course some of our collegues have found that playing Resident Evil 7 in VR can be a bit of a nightmare!

Square Enix brought a lot of stuff to E3 -their booth had several stations for Final Fantasy XVStar Ocean VKingdom Hearts 2.8Final Fantasy XII HD and more. It would have been easy to lose an entire day of E3 to the offerings at Square Enix’s booth alone. Don’t forget that Kingdom Hearts 2.8 includes new content not found in other games – if you missed the E3 trailer from a few days ago check it out here.

That’s it! The conclusion of our 2016 3rd party booth tour in pictures. Do you think that a number of the games announced at E3 will be successful? Let us know which booth from E3 was your favorite in the comments below.

Just to recap some of the biggest games we’ve seen so far at E3 2016: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Lawbreakers, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Resident Evil 7, Death Striding and Gravity Rush 2. AAA publishers like Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo alongside smaller indie develoeprs brought their best games to this year’s E3 Expo!

Several Star Ocean V: Integrity and Faithlessness Videos Land During E3

Posted on June 15, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Square Enix has released several new trailers, b-roll footage and screenshots prior to the release of Star Ocean V: Integrity and Faithlessness on PS3 and PlayStation 4. With these new videos you can get to know Relia, one of the characters in the game as well as meet the actors behind the voice talent that bring the characters to life.

Star Ocean V: Integrity and Faithlessness is the fifth entry in the long running RPG franchise that has been around since the days of the original PlayStation back into the 90s. Utilizing a real time battle system players are able to take control of 1 of 7 characters in combat seamlessly with a new system that allows Square to have the game seamlessly transition between gameplay and cinematic cut-scenes. Story wise the main protagonist comes from an ‘under developed’ planet with another species that has highly advanced technology.

The game will be out on June 28th in North America and was released on March 31st in Japan.

Final Fantasy XII HD Remaster Is Real, Coming 2017

Posted on June 6, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Final Fantasy XII can be heard rejoicing as Square Enix confirmed the long rumoured, and at one time accidentally leaked, FFXII Remaster for PlayStation 4.

Titled Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age this revised version of the 2006 classic includes the Zodiac Job System originally introduced in Final Fantasy XII: International, upgraded models / textures, higher resolution cinematics, 7.1 audio support and an auto save system.

No other platforms other than PS4 has been confirmed and a release outside of Japan has also not been confirmed. It is quite possible that we will see an expanded trailer for this game at Sony’s E3 press conference.

2017 is going to be a big year for the Final Fantasy brand as the first chapter of the FFVII remake is expected to be launched in time for that game’s 20th anniversary. The next numbered instalment, FFXV will be released on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 this fall.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Will Follow In The Footsteps of Final Fantasy XIII

Posted on April 11, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Final Fantasy VII remake

Last week we brought you ton of news about Square Enix’s upcoming Final Fantasy XV but that wasn’t the only game that producer Yoshinori Kitase discussed. Kitsae also gave readers an insight into how the team’s approach to remaking the 19 year old classic Final Fantasy VII.

He pointed out that when Square announced the multi-part remake that fans were confused about how the developer would stretch the story across multiple games. Kitsae points out that allowing events to unfold from multiple points of view that the XIII series did well. Here’s the direct quote:

“When the project was first announced, people were confused by its multi-part nature, but the goal is to structure it more like Final Fantasy XIII than an episodic series.”

He also said:

“It will essentially be a full scale game for each part of the multi-part series. In XIII, each instalment told the story from a different angle. It was kind of like approaching an unknown territory in a sense.”

[youtube id=”A3sBZ5Nr4hc”]

Are you excited for the Final Fantasy VII remake for current generation consoles? If Square Enix follows through with their multi-game promise hopefully we’ll get the first game next year for FF7’s 20th anniversary. We should see the subsequent entries a few years apart if the FFXIII release model holds true.

New Final Fantasy XV Details: Weapons, Crafting, Opening Chapter & More

Posted on April 8, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Final Fantasy XV

Game Informer has a huge Final Fantasy XV cover story in this month’s issue and the folks over at NeoGaf have already provided a handy synopsis of all of the latest information for our reading pleasure. New details on the game’s plot, quest system, opening chapter, combat, weapons, crafting and more were revealed in this lengthy post by user Philippo. There’s lots of ground to cover, perhaps more ground to cover than Notcus and crew did when hunting down that Behemoth in Episode Duscae! So why don’t we jump right In?

Duscae1

Final Fantasy XV will have a number of different weapon types available, not just the ones we’ve seen in the Platinum Demo and Episode Duscae. Swords, shields, lances, firearms and an unrevealed “machine” class of weaponry make up the weapon classes revealed thus far. The weapons your party members use can be crafted and upgraded during the story with materials that you find in battle.

Each member of your party has their own “special talent” which can impact gameplay and adds character growth / development. Noctus can learn how to fish, Ignis can learn how to cook, Prompto can become killed with a camera and Gladiolus can learn how to hone his survival instincts.

FFXV_Car

Remember the opening scene the starts off Episode Duscase with the groups car, the Regalia, breaking down? That is actually the beginning of the game’s opening chapter – but unlike Duscae there is no hunt for the Behmoth! Speaking of the Regalia, its trunk is used as an extended inventory for the entire party.

Currently the devs at Square Enix have designed over 200 quests into the games but are working on more. Right now there are four different kinds of quests in the game – Main scenario, side quests (think Chocobos, fishing etc.), regional quests and monster hunts.  You won’t be tripping over quests – the GI article specifically mentions that FFXV doesn’t have as much questing as other open world games like The Witcher III or Skyrim but that the quests that do exist in the game feel like they carry real weight, they aren’t insignificant.

There are tons of juicy story tidbits that I just don’t want to spoil in this news post, go ahead and read them for yourself if you don’t mind minor story spoilers. Surprisingly the game also has an Episode 0 prequel chapter but Game Informer wasn’t allowed to play it during their preview session.

Final Fantasy XV releases on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 30th.

New Playable Final Fantasy XV Demo Released, Full Game Releases September 30th

Posted on March 31, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

In case you haven’t heard the earth shattering news, Final Fantasy XV – the now decades long in development entry in the FF series, formerly known as Versus XIII – has a release date! As announced during the Final Fantasy XV Uncovered event, retail / digital copies will be playable on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 30th of this year.

Alongside of the reveal of the release date, and a whole pile of tie-in multimedia projects, Square Enix also unleashed a brand new playable demo for the game. Titled Platinum Demo, this short glimpse into the world of the 15th Final Fantasy game is actually a stand-alone story staring a young Noctus.

Final Fantasy XV

Here’s the official game synopsis from the PlayStation Store:

PLATINUM DEMO — FINAL FANTASY XV whisks players away to a fragmented dreamscape, introducing an original story with a few unique twists. Join young Noctis and his magical guide as you explore the fantastical world of his dreams.

Surely fans will be tearing this demo apart for the coming days.. Or weeks… or months until the full game’s release. You can watch a trail for the Platinum Demo in the embedded player below.
