According to Deadline, Paramount Pictures has landed the movie rights to SEGA’s Sonic the Hedgehog. Neal Moritz, who made the move to Paramount from Sony, signed a first-look deal with his studio Original Film and Paramount Pictures and the movie rights to Sonic the Hedgehog come with that deal.
The picture was set up by Moritz and Deadpool director Tim Miller at Sony in 2014 as a hybrid live-action/CG-animated feature. In the new production Mortiz and his studio will produce. Jeff Fowler will direct.
Would you watch a feature length Sonic the Hedgehog movie? Are you cool with it possibly being a live-action/CG-animated feature or would you rather a fully animated feature?
A fan lead project to remake Sonic 2 in HD complete with a brand-new vector based art style has released their first demo in over 5 years. Unlike the alpha demo of Sonic 2 HD that was released way back in 2012, version 2.0’s demo includes multiple stages and boss battles alongside a remastered soundtrack.
According to the project’s F.A.Q section, this fan game has been in development for 9 years – worked started in 2008!
“The idea of creating a high-definition version of SEGA’s classic Sonic the Hedgehog 2 first appeared on the website Alchemist Defined around 2007. An artist named “Billy” had drawn a detailed piece of artwork depicting Sonic about to fight the final boss in Death Egg Zone. The low-resolution sprites were brought to life in this recreation; both the background and the characters had been completely remastered. A number of video game websites quickly discovered the image and shared it with their readers. The question had been posed: “What would Sonic 2 look like in high definition?”
With this idea planted in the community’s mind and “Vincent” stepping forward to take the helm, the Sonic 2 HD project officially began in 2008.”
Here are the recommended specs for the 2.0 demo:
OS Windows 7 Service Pack 1 64bit
CPU Intel Core i5 2500
GeForce GTX 650 1GB
4GB RAM
400MB of disk space
Vincenzo Mastrorosato and his team are to be commended for their persistence and passion to keep this project alive and going for almost a decade. When so many promising fan remakes, sequels or tributes come to end due to burn out, project abandonment or legal issues it is refreshing when something like the Sonic 2 HD demo comes along.

SEGA has announced the rumored SEGA Forever, a mobile-centric collection of classic titles spanning over 20 years of releases and three console generations. With 5 SEGA exclusive Genesis titles available at launch – Sonic The Hedgehog, Comix Zone, Phantasy Star II, Altered Beast and Kid Chameleon – there’s quite a few different genres represented. SEGA Forever games support features like cloud saves, Bluetooth controllers, save states and offline play regardless of the player’s advertising status. As with the Crazy Taxi port released a couple of weeks ago – games in SEGA Forever collection will be supported by periodic in-game advertisements, however, these can be removed for $1.99 USD per title.
SEGA is promising to release more classic titles from the Master Drive, Genesis, Saturn and even 1999’s Dreamcast (a personal favorite) at some point down the line. Players should expect new releases every two weeks or so but SEGA has not yet confirmed any future titles for the service.
Check out some media below and make sure to check the Google Play Store and Apple App Store for SEGA Forever when it launches tomorrow.
Today, SEGA revealed the third gameplay style in Sonic Forces is a powerful gadget touting customizable character. For the first time in the Sonic series, players can create their own original Hero Character, and customize how the character plays and how it looks. This newly revealed playstyle in Sonic Forces is in addition to the previously revealed fast-paced action of Modern Sonic and the thrilling platforming of Classic Sonic.
Players will be equipping their custom Hero Character with one of a variety of powerful unique gadgets called Wispons. Wispons are an evolution of the Color Powers from Sonic Colors and double as both offensive abilities and as a way to platform through levels quickly. Along with the Wispon, the Hero Character will have a grappling hook they can utilize to quickly traverse across zones. Players can also customize the Hero Character’s looks by choosing and swapping between hundreds of accessories and outfit options to change the character’s appearance as they play through the game.
There are seven base animal types that players can select from, each with varying special abilities:
Wolf – Automatically draws in rings when near them
Rabbit – Has longer invincible time after receiving damage
Cat – Keeps one ring after being hit
Dog – Restarts with five rings after the player dies
Bear – Blows away enemies with a homing attack
Bird – Flies high with double jump abilities
Hedgehog – Collects rings when getting damaged
The created character will also be a key part of the story, appearing not only in cut scenes, but by being a crucial element in the story.
Sonic Forces will be available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, & PC this holiday.

I usually don’t look ahead in the monthly comic solicitations that far in advance. Since I only deal with Archie Comics here on Broken Joysticks I often take a look at the next upcoming months comics of Sonic the Hedgehog and previously Mega Man. Upon looking at the May solicitations I noticed that the blue blur was missing.
While it’s not uncommon for a comic to skip a month I perused the June solicitations but found nothing. Next I opened up the July solicitations, which Archie Comics just sent out last Tuesday and again found nothing. Neither Sonic the Hedgehog nor Sonic Universe are listed for the next three months. Both comics are also not longer listed in either series or subscription listings.
