Ruffian Reveals Streets of Rage Reboot Concept

Posted on December 7, 2012 by Broken Joysticks

As we play video games in the current age of reboots, revisions and remasters, developers are always looking to revive vintage franchises that may have been lost in the annals of time for both hardened fans who can wax poetic of the classics, and the new generation of potential fans.

Now, one such franchise that has been silent for quite some time is the brilliant beat ‘em up known to many as Streets of Rage. Made famous for providing an exclusive arcade-style action game for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive with some of the best VG soundtracks created by famed music director Yuzo Koshiro, it would be a series of games that served as a vantage point for Sega in the console wars of the early ‘90s. Sadly, the last Streets of Rage game that was released was Streets of Rage 3 which was more than eighteen years ago, and that’s not counting the debacle that became Fighting Force. However, one developer did not forget and wanted to revive this bare knuckle brawler.

Enter Ruffian Games, best known for their sequel to the skill-for-killing Crackdown 2, and their ultimate pitch: Revive Streets of Rage. Over the course of six to eight weeks with a small group to pitch their efforts, Ruffian produced a 3D prototype of what could’ve been a digitial distributed rendition of the SoR remake. The video below reveals the initial concept for all its worth:

Phantasy Star Online 2 Vita Beta Begins In Japan

Posted on December 5, 2012 by Rae Michelle Richards

Phantasy Star Online 2 isn’t even out in North America yet but that hasn’t stopped an entire community of avid players from either figuring out how to sign up the Japanese version or posting on forums about the game. PSO2 will see a release on Sony’s Ps Vita sometime early next year in Japan and right now beta sign ups are available for the portable version.

I’m sure by the time this article is published thousands of English speaking gamers will be flooding the servers with their vitas. In order to sign up for the Japanese Beta you will need a PS Vita with an active Japanese PSN account as well as a SEGA Network ID. There are a limited number of spots (50,000) so HURRY!

Only the PC version has been confirmed for North America and is scheduled to arrive sometime next spring. PSO2 is also heading to mobile android phones in Japan but just like the Vita version it may never see the light of day on our shores. When the Vita version releases next Feb it will be available free of charge, supported by micro transactions, or as part of a retail bundle that includes a ton of extras.

Archie Comics’ Megaman Is Great

Posted on December 2, 2012 by Les Major

When I bought my first Megaman comics by Archie I was concerned since in most comic stores I was lead to a specific kids section. It made me think the comics would be pretty basic, but that’s actually not true. From the inner conflict Megaman faces during his first battles taking down rampaging robot masters to a convention held hostage by an anti-robot protest group the comics are quite involving!

In 2013 Megaman will be meeting up with Sonic in a 12-part cross over. Written by Ian Flynn it is still unclear how the characters will meet, or on what grounds the story will develop. Ian is very excited about the project and definitely wants to make the most out of this opportunity. So if you’re a Sonic or Megaman fan, keep a look out for it. In the meantime Archie Comics has back issues as well as graphic novels if you want to get caught up on either hero.

Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed | Review

Posted on November 30, 2012 by Broken Joysticks

Cue old school Genesis SEGA jingle–that aura of nostalgia is in the air. Why you ask? Because the sequel to Sega’s Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing has arrived with Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. Released on November 18th, the game was released on multiple platforms including Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U. There will be a handheld port for Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita as well as PC releasing on December 11th. This review is based on the Xbox 360 version and the only differences between the console versions are exclusive characters where the Wii U version has a playable Mii character and the Xbox 360 version having your Avatar playable. There are no exclusive characters for the PlayStation 3.Read More

New Trailer for Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed for WiiU

Posted on November 9, 2012 by Broken Joysticks

Sega of America released the brand-new trailer for Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, this time specifically dedicated to the WiiU version. While at first glance this game seems to look on par with the current generation consoles’ version, Sumo Digital has made it quite clear to utilize the WiiU Gamepad as much as possible. There might be some exclusive features that may feel a bit too unnecessary, but without revealing too much from the trailer, the idea of  five-player multiplayer is on the level for something great.

Regardless of the newly implemented WiiU features, this trailer proves that Nintendo better step up the next iteration of Mario Kart if Sega can continue producing surprisingly competent kart-racing games as such. As soon as they figure out a way to include currently forgotten Sega characters like Greendog and Kid Chameleon, then it would be the greatest racing game ever made, but alas that’s just a personal rant. Anyway, check out the trailer below.

NiGHTS into DREAMS… | Review

Posted on October 22, 2012 by Jeff Wade

Much like listening in on someone’s dreams, NiGHTS into Dreams… is endlessly fascinating to those experiencing it but incomprehensible to anyone listening in.

First released on the Sega Saturn 16 years ago, NiGHTS (hencforth just Nights for the sake of copy editors everywhere) was Sonic Team’s big push for the console, an ambitious game that aimed to accurately convey the feeling of flight just as their namesake aimed to capture the sensation of speed. This re-release comes in two flavors; a no frills rendering of the original as seen in 1996 and an HD upscale of the 2008 Japan only PS2 remake.Read More

Anarchy Reigns gets Western Date and price cut

Posted on October 19, 2012 by Jeff Wade

Platinum Games’ arena brawler/semi Madworld sequel Anarchy Reigns was originally set for a release this summer, before a last minute delay by publisher SEGA pushed it in to 2013. Now, the game is finally set to enter the ring early next year and will come with a budget price.

The studio announced today via Twitter that the open world fighter will hit American markets on January 8 at a reduced $29.99 price point. Europe will get it a few days latter on January 11 at a similarly reduced price point.

Platinum Games has expressed frustration in the past about the international release of Anarcy Reigns. Originally released in July in Japan, localization and devolpment was already completed and full English text and voice acting is included on that version of the game.

Anarchy Reigns was the last title in SEGA’s publishing deal with Platinum, and the complications with its release caused some concern about the health of the studio. Considering the incresasingly rosy relationship with the studio and Nintendo on Wii-U projects The Wonderful 101 and Bayonneta 2 as well as Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima stating that he would only do a sequel to the action spin off Metal Gear Rising Revengance with the team at Platinum offer some peace of mind for fans of the action developer.

ToeJam & Earl Coming To Xbox Live Arcade Next Month

Posted on October 13, 2012 by Joshua Rust

As part of SEGA’s new strategy of releasing older classic games, it looks like the next one on the list to get the “Vintage Collection” is ToeJam & Earl.  The other releases under the SEGA Vintage Collection include: Alex Kidd & Co., Monster Island, Golden Axe, and Streets of Rage.

Within the Vintage Collection, there will be two games: ToeJam & Earl as well as ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron. For the first time both of these titles will feature co-op as well! I’m not sure how many of you have ever heard of ToeJam & Earl, but they came out on SEGA Genesis/Megadrive when I was growing up as a kid. In fact, the Genesis is still one of my most favorite consoles still.

SEGA Vintage Collection: ToeJam & Earl is expected to launch for 800 MSP November 7th on XBLA.

Sonic Adventure 2 HD | Review

Posted on October 9, 2012 by Jason Bassett

Oh Sega. You have come a long way since the Sonic the Hedgehog reboot for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. You have been trying your hardest to give us a great Sonic game since those days where you were at your lowest point. With the last games: Sonic Generations and Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episodes I and II, it seems as though you’re starting to come back into good graces with the fans.

With Sonic Adventure 2 HD and the plethora of other old Dreamcast titles, it seems as though Sega is going back to the past to look for some inspiration. It’s good that they have come back to Sonic Adventure 2, because it was one of the most controversial titles during it’s time on the Dreamcast and now we have the full version just sitting on our Xbox 360 and PS3 hard drives. So, does Sonic Adventure 2 bring the goods?Read More

Sonic Adventure 2 & Nights into Dreams Release October 2nd

Posted on September 17, 2012 by Rae Michelle Richards

Sega continues their recent trend of releasing HD ports of previous generation classics with the release of Sonic Adventure 2 HD and Nights into Dreams HD early next month. Both of these games will be available individually for $9.99 on Playstation Network and Xbox on October 2nd & 5th respectively.

Similar to the DX Addon for the HD Port of Sonic Adventure the sequel will have an optional $5 add-on. The “battle mode” addon allows players to gain access to the previously GameCube exclusive multiplayer modes. Nights Into Dreams also has its own expansion content, Christmas Nights, an add-on that was originally available through gaming magazines and special orders. Unlike Battle Mode Christmas Nights will be available free of charge.

I cannot wait to rip up the streets of San Francisco in City Escape, even just for old time’s sake. Sure, the game might be dated but that level makes the $10 entry price worth every penny!

Namco Bandai And Sega Team Up For.. Drumming In Yakuza 5?

Posted on August 8, 2012 by Seung Lee

The Yakuza games have always had a plethora of minigames to lure players away from their main objectives, and it looks like that’ll also be the case in the fifth main installment of the series. Now, I haven’t played all of the Yakuza games, but I do remember there being a rhythm game of sorts in 3. There’s no info yet on what exactly all of the minigames will be in Yakuza 5, but we now know that one of them will be a joint collaboration between Namco Bandai Games and Sega.

Andriasang managed to get a hold of this week’s Famitsu, a popular Japanese gaming magazine, and learned about this new minigame. Taiko: Drum Master was an arcade drumming game, developed by Namco (this was before the merge with Bandai), that was then ported over to the PlayStation 2. An arcade machine with this game will be available to play in Yakuza 5, with songs such as Mappy Ondo and Shinsekai Yori (just as clueless as you are as to what these songs are). Let’s just hope that it won’t be too difficult to play, considering that it IS Japan after all..

Now, I haven’t mentioned this yet, but Yakuza 5 isn’t even confirmed for release outside of Japan. It’ll be out in December ’12 for the PS3 over there. As for when the rest of us will get it, we’ll have to see. Considering that all past four main installments of the series have made it to the rest of the world, it’s safe to say that us non-Japanese fluent people will be able to return to the Land of the Rising Sun next year.
