Valkyria Chronicles Remastered First Trailer Released

Posted on January 5, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

You might have missed it over the holidays but SEGA’s official YouTube channel released a new trailer for Valkyria Chronicles Remastered for the PlayStation 4.

In addition to a higher resolution (1080P versus the PS3 original’s 720P) the PS4 version includes an additional difficulty level called “Hard EX Mode” and three additional chapters that expand the game’s story. First print copies of the game will also come with a playable demo for the upcoming action spinoff Valkyria: Azure Revolution.

There has been no word on a western release. The last time a Valkyria game was released in North America and Europe was the PC port of the original game on Steam.

Rumor: Distribution Agreement The Reason PSO2 Has Yet To Reach Western Shores

Posted on January 2, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Phantasy Star Online 2

Could a single contract be responsible for Phantasy Star Online 2 not seeing a western release despite the huge success of Free-to-Play MMORPGs?  According to a source speaking anonymously to SEGA fan site TSSZ Beyond Blue, this is indeed the case. This particular agreement is speculated to be between SEGA of Japan and Gamania Digital Entertainment, it is said that SEGA is barred from publishing PSO2 on any distribution platform and not just Valve’s Steam – which has been their mainstay for PC ports.

For western fans of the long dormant series there may yet be hope – the agreement between the two companies is said to have a finite length, meaning that the clauses dealing with distribution will eventually expire although an exact timeframe is not known. Gamania was involved with the Chinese rollout of Phantasy Star Online 2 in both mainland China, Hong Kong and Tawian.

Official communication with western fans ceased on the official PSO English North Ameriecan Facebook pag went dark over three years ago after the game was playable at PAX Prime 2012. Fans have since had to download the Japanese version and use unofficial translation patches to get the game into a playable state or use VPNs to play the official English version launched in South East Asia launched in 2014

In-Engine Total War: Warhammer Trailer Released

Posted on November 26, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

SEGA and Creative Assembly have teamed up to give us the first in-engine look at the upcoming Total War: Warhammer which launches in April 2016. Thirst glimpse of the campaign gives us a look at some of the goblin encampments as they plan to wage war all the way from the Badlands to the Chaos Wastes.

Total War: Warhammer will feature similar gameplay to other titles in the Total War franchise – minus the historical accuracy. Basically replace the roman empire with Orks, The Empire (humans), Dwarves and Vampire Counts.  Also unlike other games factions in this game may also have access to flying units – something that the time periods and real world settings of the other Total War franchise don’t allow for.

Check out the trailer below.

Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax | Review

Posted on October 29, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Version Tested: PlayStation Vita

Anime and fighting games are two things that have come hand-in-hand at least early as the success of Street Fighter II back in the early 90s. Whether discussing games that utilize anime tropes and art-styles like Melty Blood or games that feature anime characters from a number of high profile series – like Dengek Bunko: Ultimate Fighting Climax, the synergy between the two is obvious.  SEGA USA brings us a brand new fighting game for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita that features a number of characters from some of the best anime from the past 10 years, but does it hold up?Read More

Hyperdimension Neptunia Vs. SEGA Hardware Girls Detailed

Posted on October 3, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

The world of Hyperdimension Neptunia is already a pretty bizarre place – consoles have been personified as videogame heroines, the world uses ‘credits’ as their currency and enemies resemble the ghosts from Pac-Man – but things are about to get even more rad with the inclusion of the ‘SEGA Hardware Girls’.

In the upcoming game Hyperdimension Neptunia Vs. SEGA Hardware Girls Nep-Nep & CO. will take on personifications of classic SEGA hardware from the past thirty years. If you ever wanted to know what an officially sanctioned Dreamcast-tan looked like, you no longer have to wonder. The folks over at Idea Factory Japan and Compile Heart have revealed a bunch of new details for the upcoming action RPG.

Here’s a brief rundown:

  • Attack order returns from the previous games
  • A new “Fever Gem” gauge has been added. When you attack the percentage on this meter increases and will eventually provide you with a Rainbow Gem.
  • While in “Fever Mode” all of your party members gain 10% to their stats, enemies are unable to take their turns – meaning you can beat the hell out of the, you can also perform your EXE special attacks.

Also included with the combat system details were a number of new screenshots. It should be obvious who the Dreamcast is – she’s literally wearing a Dreamcast controller as a tiara! I also want Game Gear’s multi-colored hair aesthetic.. Like GOD DAMN!

Hypedimension Neptunia X SEGA Hardware Girls will be released in Japan on November 26th for the PlayStation Vita. No word on an international release.

Phantasy Star Online 2 Anime Due Out In 2016

Posted on July 17, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

SEGA of Japan has announced an animated adaptation of its popular Japanese free-to-play MMORPG Phantasy Star Online. The anew anime titled Phantasy Star Online 2: The Animation will debut sometime in 2016 to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the original PSO on the Dreamcast and will take place on a near future presumably before the events of the game.

The Windows PC version of Phantasy Star Online 2 was released in Japan in 2012 with a PlayStation Vita version following in 2013 and an Android version for Smart Phones and tablets last year. A localized English version of PSO2 went live in southern Asia last March and there has been little word on a North American or European release outside of vague omissions by Sega America that the game has been delayed.

You can check out the website for Phantasy Star Online 2: The Animation here.

SEGA Ruined My Favorite Free To Play Game With One Update

Posted on June 7, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

SEGA has yet to launch the blue blur’s latest free to play title Sonic Runners in the United States and other countries but thanks to a soft launch here in Canada I’ve been enjoying the addictive endless runner for the past few months thanks to its excellent gameplay. Unfortunately after SEGA released the latest patch for the game I had no choice but to delete runners from my phone.

Prior to the last patch players were allowed up to five lives to be stocked before hitting a paywall. The wait for lives to regen pre-patch wasn’t too bad either, you would gain one live every ten minutes. SEGA is putting on the squeeze on existing free-to-play players by changing the lives cap to 3, making us wait even longer to re-gen lives and reducing the login bonus.

Rather than trying to gain additional revenue from players like myself who have been playing this game for months by gating off features that we have been receiving for free it would have been nice to see SEGA developing some new premium content for the game. If SEGA had released additional characters for say $3.99 a piece or extra zones for a small price I would have been happy to pay up. I can only see this strategy coming back to bite SEGA in the butt. I’ll be looking for another title to scratch that platforming itch because it is clear that SEGA has messed up Sonic Runner’s monetization strategy.

SEGA has released their 2008 strategy RPG Valkryia Chronicles onto the Steam Store this morning. As we covered earlier in the month, the announcement of VC coming to PC was pretty surprising and almost out of nowhere. This port comes with some good news – it supports any resolution your video card can handle , heck PCGamer got the thing running at 4K resolution!

The system requirements are pretty lax too – SEGA is recommendations a 3GHZ Dual Core with 3GB of RAM and at least a Geforce280. Next thing you know you’ll be able to play this on a modern smartphone, come on SEGA why not?

The series did see two sequels on the PlayStation Portable – Valkyria Chronicles 2 which was released worldwide and Valkyria Chronicles 3 which was only released in Japan. SEGA Unveils Sonic Boom

Posted on February 7, 2014 by Jason Nason

SEGA unveiled their next Sonic project with the announcement of Sonic Boom, two new games coming exclusively to the Nintendo Wii U and 3DS systems. But the announcement was more than just that with the revelation that the company is co-producing a new television series as well.

Sonic the Hedgehog has spawned more than 70 video game titles and four animated series since launching way back in June 1991. This year, SEGA is introducing a new branch of the Sonic universe, entitled Sonic Boom, that will debut a new look for Sonic and friends. The worlds of the TV series and videogame will share a common narrative and a number of location and stylistic similarities reflecting full collaboration between videogame, TV series partners and SEGA from the outset.

The Sonic Boom television series, co-produced by SEGA of America Inc. and OuiDO! Productions, will debut on Cartoon Network in the U.S. The series is an ensemble comedy consisting of 52 x 11-minute standalone episodes. Every episode starts from a small character-driven story and explodes into an epic tale of saving the world, robot battles and more.

SEGA Announces New Aliens Game

Posted on January 8, 2014 by Jason Nason

Earlier today SEGA & Twentieth Century Fox announced a new game in the Alien series coming to current and next gen consoles. Alien: Isolation, a first-person survival horror experience, will focus on capturing the horror and tension evoked by Ridley Scott’s 1979 classic film. The game is being developed by Creative Assembly with the game set to be released in late 2014 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Windows PC.

The game takes place on a decommissioned trading station in the fringes of space, where fear and panic have gripped the inhabitants. Players will find themselves in an atmosphere of constant dread and mortal danger as an unpredictable, ruthless Xenomorph is stalking and killing deep in the shadows. Underpowered and under prepared, you must scavenge resources, improvise solutions and use your wits, not just to succeed in your mission, but to simply stay alive.

“In Alien: Isolation, we have taken the series back to the roots of Ridley Scott’s 1979 movie, the original survival horror,” said Alistair Hope, Creative Lead at Creative Assembly. “Our Alien is a truly terrifying creature, as intelligent as he is hostile, relentless, brutal and unstoppable. This is the Alien game fans of the series have always wanted.”
