Humble Bundle No Longer Offering Steam Keys

Posted on November 2, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

Low cost games are a great deal for the frugal and casual among us but it looks like one of the key sources of low cost PC games, the Humble Bundle, have changed their terms of service. Donating a few bucks for charity used to score you a few steam keys for some great games but it looks like the team behind the Humble Bundle has decided to discontinue the practice of giving away steam codes. Instead, donators are now presented with the option of clicking a link on their order confirmation screen that will add the games to their account through the Steam client.

Originally pointed out by watchful users on Reddit, the change in policy was noticed by potential buyers of the latest bundle featuring Team 17’s Worms franchise. As several of the users point out, there was a very shaky second hand market where individuals were able to sell some of the “beat the average” titles for a much higher price. This is especially true for some of the previous bundles, like the THQ Bundle, which featured $60+ of games for as little as $1. Even though a very popular Steam Key trading community emerged from the Humble scene, this could be a move to disarm those looking to make a profit.Read More

Microsoft Changes Course On Kinect For Xbox One

Posted on August 12, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

You need not worry about the mandatory Kinect policy Microsoft announced earlier in the year. It was only a little while after E3 that Microsoft reversed their DRM policies for the Xbox One and now the company has changed tone once again, stating the users will be able to turn off the motion sensor in the system’s settings menu, or unplug it all together.

Marc Whitten of Microsoft gave a bit of a sound bite to IGN regarding the new policy:

“That said, like online, the console will still function if Kinect isn’t plugged in, although you won’t be able to use any feature or experience that explicitly uses the sensor,”  Read More

Xbox Live Family Plan No More As of Aug 27th

Posted on August 11, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

We’ve known for a while now that the Xbox Live Family Plan was going to be no more sometime starting this summer and now subscribers have received notice that the axe will fall on their plan on August 27th.

Xbox Live Family Plan allowed up to four accounts (one parent, three child) to share an Xbox Live subscription for one year for $99. Each of the four accounts will now be separated from one another and each user will need to purchase individual subscriptions and will also no longer be able to share Microsoft points or access activity reports for child accounts.

If you’re planning to purchase an Xbox One that system allows you to assign a “master account” which will extend gold benefit to any account that signs into that system including Xbox Live silver accounts.  You can use your master account to sign into a second Xbox One or Xbox 360 while still extending gold benefits to users on the Xbox One.

Cancellation of this plan is likely to be a blow to Xbox owners who have multiple Xbox 360s in their homes. Commenters on other outlets have pointed out using an Xbox in the bedroom to watch Netflix while playing a game in the living room is no longer viable, a likely solution for those of us who don’t want to pay for two live accounts just for convenience.
