Pokken Tournament DX Academy To be Featured At EVO 2017

Posted on July 14, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

Attendees of this year’s EVO Tournament won’t need to have trained up to a professional level to enjoy hands-on time with Nintendo’s upcoming enhanced port of Pokken Tournament thanks to the announcement of the Pokken Tournament Academy booth.

Visitors to the Pokken Tournament Academy booth can try out DX almost a full two months before it is released on September 22nd. Visitors will also be able to chat with members of the development team, enter a contest to win their own Nintendo Switch console and possibly most importantly receive a special invitation to a undisclosed Nintendo event taking place later this year at PAX West.

Here’s the low down on the where and when for Pokken Tournament DX’s EVO appearance:

WHEN:
July 14-15
10 a.m.-8 p.m. PT

WHERE:
EVO
Mandalay Bay – South Convention Center – Nintendo Booth (No. 121)
3950 S. Las Vegas Blvd.
Las Vegas, NV 89119
The original Wii U version of Pokken Tournament was released in July of 2015. Now two years later Nintendo is updating the game for their home console / portable hybrid, the Nintendo Switch, with the addition of previously DLC only Pokemon: Croagunk, Scizor, Empoleon, Darkrai and the DX exclusive Decidueye. New multiplayer centric modes have also been added to the DX version, to entice Trainers to battle against their friends on a whole new platform.

Pokken Tournament’s Tutorial Is Tediously Long

Posted on March 23, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Today I finally had the chance to sit down and try out Pokken Tournament on my Wii-U, I thought I was going to be in for a lighthearted fighting game but what I found instead was tutorial, after tutorial, after tutorial just to learn the basics.  After about the fifth tutorial I swear my eyes were starting to glaze over, it was 8 A.M university lectures all over again – I could probably only give you the gist of how Pokken Tournament plays due to the number of sheer systems the opening three tutorials throw at you.

pokken_tournament_03

From what I gather: Each Pokemon in the game has different statistics – health, speed, damage etc and during a match you can call in special Pokemon to either give yourself buffs or cast de-buffs on to your opponents thanks to a special gauge that fills up over time. Then of course, there are the fighting game staples of high attacks, mid attacks, low attacks, standard blocks, cancels, advancing guards, counter-attacks, special attacks, special moves… have I lost you yet? What I’m trying to say is that the initial tutorial in Pokken Tournament does a great job in telling you how deep the fighting system is without actually letting you learn. Don’t expect to go hands-on with some of the most pivotal maneuvers required in skill play, want to learn to swiftly pull off a cancel? Too bad the tutorial gives you 30 seconds then it just rushes you along to the next maneuver.

Best of all? The opening tutorial takes half an hour…. half an hour. Don’t believe me? Watch the whole thing below, because it’s going to take me a while before I can bring you in-depth impressions. Back to practising my quick attack…

Pokkén Tournament Launches this Friday

Posted on March 14, 2016 by Jason Nason

The release of Pokkén Tournament is nearly here, with the game hitting store shelves in North America this Friday. This finally brings the high-definition game play and over-the-top action to never-before-seen battles between some of the most recognizable Pokémon characters.

Pokkén Tournament is of course a collaboration between The Pokémon Company and BANDAI Namco Entertainment Inc. The game is a new fighting game for Wii U that lets players use their favorite Pokémon characters to battle it out in fighting arenas. This looks and feels like a combination of the turn-based battles fans will recognize from the role-playing series with what can be typically seen from the anime series.

Posted on February 20, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

In these brief clips we get a look at the games’ main menu as well as our first taste of the official announcer for the English version.

Some folks over at NeoGaf aren’t exactly impressed with the female announcer Nintendo of America has chosen for the game. They point out that her excitement doesn’t exactly come across very well but overall the game’s presentation and graphics have been praised by fans thanks to pre-release footage.

We also now know the final roster of playable Pokémon (not including the 15 support monsters used temporarily in battle.  Here’s the full line-up:

Pokken Tournament Gets Its Own Controller In North America

Posted on December 29, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Ninndo and Namco’s collaborative Pokemon themed fighting game, Pokken Tournament will be receiving its own official controller manufactured by long peripheral company Hori. The controller is based upon the arcade cabinet’s button layout and was previously announced for release in Japan.

If you want to get your hands on the official Pokken Tournament Controller you won’t have to look in any tall grass – they are available for pre order on Amazon for $25 USD. Currently they have a ship date of March 18th 2016, which has been confirmed as the Japanese release date for the game, no solid date for a North American release currently exists outside of a vague “Q2 2016” window.

Pokken Tournament was originally released in Japanese arcades in July of this year.

Nintendo Unveils Pokémon Arcade Fighting Game

Posted on August 26, 2014 by Jason Nason

Nintendo and the Pokémon company released a teaser video today of a new collaboration between the companies and Bandai Namco Games. In the unlikliest of games, Pokémon will be made into an arcade fighting game to be called Pokkén Tournament.

Not a lot of information has been released about the game aside from the title and tentative release date. The game will be released in arcades in Japan in 2015, but I haven’t seen any information about if the game will be released in North American arcades OR on the Nintendo Wii U.

The game is the second recent collaboration between Nintendo and outside developers, with the most recent being Hyrule Warriors with Koei Tecmo Games. Personally it’s nice to see Nintendo branching out a little bit with different genre twists to their existing catalog of properties. Perhaps next we’ll see an MMORPG with the Pokémon license to be produced alongside Square Enix?
