Alpha Colony Kickstarter Yields Surprise Twist Ending

Posted on December 3, 2012 by Broken Joysticks

For those that were fans of the mid-80’s perennial interstellar economical multiplayer game known to many as M.U.L.E., then recently there was some good news. The developers at DreamQuest Games who have worked on a number of titles including Nexuiz and Lego Universe, had spawned a brilliant idea to replicate the classic with modern elements taken from the current generation of turn-based strategy games.

The game itself would be named Alpha Colony, and would usher in a new audience to those who enjoyed such games like Settlers of Catan or Carcassonne, all the while providing a more colorful and family-friendly style on the PC, iOS and Android.  Taking inspiration from other independent developers looking to rally a fan base around a brand-new product with a lack of funding, DreamQuest looked to Kickstarter for some funding and support from the soon-to-be fans. The goal in question would be a meager $50,000 USD, over the course a single month. Starting November 2nd, it would be clear that they could make the Kickstarter goal and fulfill their promises.  Now the bad news.

Sequel On The Way For Hotline Miami

Posted on November 28, 2012 by Les Major

Jonatan Söderström, creator of Hotline Miami has confirmed there will be a Hotline Miami 2. Earlier this week he tweeted, “Working while listening to the sweet tunes of a preliminary Hotline Miami 2 soundtrack that we’ve put together during the weekend.” Sounds like a productive Black Friday weekend indeed!

In an interview with Eurogamer, Jonatan revealed more about the sequel. Originally DLC for the first game was planned, but it was decided instead to be made into a full fledged sequel. He did also note however that they only have general ideas for the second game, and the team is still working on fixing Hotline Miami.

Our own Aaron Chados loved the original and you can check out his review here.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City removed from Steam

Posted on November 15, 2012 by Broken Joysticks

For those of you  that have not yet purchased Grand Theft Auto: Vice City off of Steam, there is now an unfortunate happenstance that’s likely to prevent you from playing the role of Tommy Vercetti for an undetermined amount of time. The reported block came from none other than Sony Music Entertainment, who cited licensing misuse on Michael Jackson’s ‘Wanna Be Startin’ Something’ found on the Vice City Fever 105 station. Rockstar has claimed that they are currently in the process of making the game available once again on Steam, as soon as this problem is fixed.

Fortunately, if you have already purchased and downloaded Vice City to begin with, you can still re-download and install it at any time, this removal only prevents any future buyers of the game at this point. Needless to say, it is an utter disappointment for the RIAA to once again step up and ruin not only music licensing in video games, but digital distribution as well.

Hotline Miami | Review

Posted on November 14, 2012 by Broken Joysticks

First impressions are often deal-breakers for so many, especially for those that look for the next video game to play. It can seem quite obvious that when anyone looks at a single glance at a screenshot for Dennation Games’ Hotline Miami, they see a pixelated 2D top down game that seems to take place inside a decently detailed building layout that also takes place in an ever-color-changing gradient. From a basic perspective, it’s not enough to win over an audience; that is until you see the game for what it truly is and discover that it’s more than looks that make it an indie gem.

Will Wright honored at Britannia Awards

Posted on November 12, 2012 by Broken Joysticks

When it comes to video game developers that have found themselves a myriad of awards, names like Gabe Newell or Shigeru Miyamoto often come to mind. However, it is the man behind some of the more ingenious time sinks of all-time that takes the crown. Will Wright of Sim City and the Sims fame acquired himself the Albert R. Broccoli Award for Worldwide Contribution to Entertainment at the 25th Annual Britannia Awards, an awards show from the Los Angeles branch of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts or BAFTA for short. The reason why Wright was selected for the coveted award was for his involvement in producing games based around game design, as well as attracting a genre of game that would be welcomed into modern culture;  open-ended non-violent simulation games, much to the likes of the highly successful Sim City and The Sims franchises.

The Albert R. Broccoli Award is dedicated to (who else?) Albert R. Broccoli, the renowned film producer who to a kindling to Ian Fleming’s James Bond series of novels, who then went about an odyssey in bringing the beloved super spy to the silver screen, thus birthing Dr. No in 1962, and igniting a worldwide passion for Bond ever since. Broccoli went on to become the first Britannia Award winner when the awards originated over twenty years ago. The award was first unveiled in 2011, when John Lasseter from Pixar and Disney fame became the first award recipient, but the only difference is Wright is the first video game developer to win not only this award, but to be recognized at the Britannia Awards. Wright has won several awards in his past, including a pair of Lifetime Achievement Awards at the Games Developer Conference Awards in 2001 and PC Magazine in 2005, not to mention the many awards from his game catalog.

To put it in perspective, other Britannia Award winners included Trey Parker/Matt Stone, Daniel Craig, Quentin Tarantino, and Daniel Day-Lewis. It just seems natural to include Will Wright with the lot.

Worms: Revolution | Review

Posted on November 5, 2012 by Broken Joysticks

If you were to think about video game franchises that have had a constant stream of releases in spite of economical and cultural shifts in the last few years, you would immediately point fingers at the more obvious Mario, Legend of Zelda and even Call of Duty as of recent. However, no one would ever mention Team 17’s algebraic trajectile strategy franchise, or better known as the Worms series; a franchise with more than a dozen titles to its name on everything from the Amiga to the Xbox 360. Truthfully, the only reason that people often forget about Worms is the fact that the franchise hasn’t made a successful impact to the gaming scene since Worms: Armageddon in 1998. For years, the blokes at Team 17 have been grasping at straws to return to that gold standard, and this year’s attempt comes in the form of Worms: Revolution, with a name that should invoke promises of a radical shift to the franchise which it does, and does not.Read More

From a long past evolving from a Mario clone into a DS game that looked more original, and finally into the stunning game that was released this week, Giana Sisters is a platformer that deserves a look. From German developer Black Forest Games it’s fantastic visuals bring a new flair to the genre by allowing gamers to switch between a punk and cute version of the heroine. A Look Back At ‘Great Giana Sisters’ from 1987

Posted on October 24, 2012 by Les Major

Recently released for PC and now available on Steam, ‘Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams‏,’ has a very interesting past that many may not be aware of. This is actually the 25th anniversary of the Giana Sisters much like many other game series recently. However you probably havn’t heard of the original ‘Great Giana Sisters’ have you?

The reason for that more than likely is that Nintendo had the game pulled from shelves due to the original being a Super Mario Bros. clone. This is actually quite unfortunate since the game itself clearly shows some of the concepts from this weeks Giana Sisters release. Instead of instantly transforming, Giana collected some sort of swirling orb that turned her from cute into punk in the original game. The 1987 version does have moments of looking like a Mario clone and then merging into it’s own level design. Take a look for yourself in the video below!

NiGHTS into DREAMS… | Review

Posted on October 22, 2012 by Jeff Wade

Much like listening in on someone’s dreams, NiGHTS into Dreams… is endlessly fascinating to those experiencing it but incomprehensible to anyone listening in.

First released on the Sega Saturn 16 years ago, NiGHTS (hencforth just Nights for the sake of copy editors everywhere) was Sonic Team’s big push for the console, an ambitious game that aimed to accurately convey the feeling of flight just as their namesake aimed to capture the sensation of speed. This re-release comes in two flavors; a no frills rendering of the original as seen in 1996 and an HD upscale of the 2008 Japan only PS2 remake.Read More

The Heroes Who Made Quest For Glory Need U

Posted on October 19, 2012 by Les Major

Not to be confused with all the recent U puns for the Wii-U, the creators of Quest for Glory are back looking to make a new PC game with some hardcore fans and some of the folks from Jolly Rover, MacGuffin’s Curse, and Emerald City Confidential! Unlike most Lori and Corey Cole adventure games, this one focuses on a named “hero”  Shawn O’Conner. He’s an thief who ends up getting caught in his thieves guild initiation. It’s either jail or reform school for Shawn, so he chooses to be sent off to Hero-U! The play style sounds a bit different too, check out the page below for full details!

Where you come in is the development team is funding this project on kickstarter! To no surprise the money is flowing in by the thousands and for $20 you can secure yourself a copy of the digital download version. That and you get access to the games production forums so you can give your feedback as well!

Join in and see all the details on Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption’s Kickstarter Page and check out the games official blog at Hero-U.Net
