Fortnite Brings Back Popular LTMS With ‘The 14 Days of Fortnite’

Posted on December 18, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

14 Days of Fortnite

Epic Games will be rotating classic, brand new and fan favorite Limited Time Modes in both the individual and team varieties every 48 and 24 hours respectively from December 19th until Jan 1st. We don’t exactly know what modes will return but honestly I’m hoping for Team Terror, Squad Terror and Gliding 50s returning during this event. The “terror” series of LTMS was honestly the most fun I had in the game during Season 6 – the addition of PVE zombies made it feel like a slice of STW crossed over into BR. Gliding 50s is a regular event at this point, so it is sure to return.

From the Patch Notes:

The 14 Days of Fortnite event will feature both new and returning LTMs. Large team modes switch every two days and small team modes rotate every 24 hours.

Starting December 19, log in each day at 9 AM ET(1400 UTC) to find out which modes are available to explore. Let us know which LTM is your favorite on our social channels!

New Additions To Creative Mode

Season 7’s Creative Mode gets a whole set of new pre-fabs that give the creative minded builders among us a touch of Winter Wonder with the “Winter Village” set.

From the Patch Notes:

Islands

  • Added 4 new Winter Islands –
    • Selectable from the player Rift on the starter island
  • Players now have 2 total “The Block” Islands instead of 1.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed multiple issues with Island Rift Portals not behaving as expected.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause Featured Island Rift Portals not functioning when more than 8 players joined a server.
  • Fixed player animation issues occurring after the “Reset Island” feature is used.
  • Fixed an issue that allowed players to build above the height limit, causing them to become stuck.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause a visiting player to lose the ability to select a Rift location if they leave and return to a host’s server.
  • Fixed issues with editing structures and placing Traps on other player’s Islands.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause Switch players to be removed from a server when one or more players max out their available Island memory

Save The World – Winter Llamas + Survival Mode

For players who enjoy the P.V.E exerpience of Save The World Mode – this latest update doesn’t disappoint. For the holidays Epic Games have added a brand new survival mode called “A Long Winter Night”. During Frostnite players will have to keep a burner alight so that they stay warm while fending off increasing waves of husks and other frozen baddies.  During this brand new mode players will earn double the amount of resources they normally due from most sources. Also you don’t keep the items you’re crafting to survive so legendary schematics are recommended for this new experience. Surviving long enough in Frostnite will reward “Winter Tickets” which can be traded in for a chance at event exclusive heroes.

From the Patch Notes:

Missions + Systems

  • Frostnite is a new experience in 7.10, testing player’s survival in a long winter night.
    • Frostnite introduces a new objective. Keep the Burner filled with scavenged BluGlo. When it runs out, so does the heat. That means a whole bunch of frozen Heroes.
    • As the burner health decreases the Storm Shield shrinks, so keep that thing filled!
    • Survive as long as you can without your gear or resources, using your survival skills, schematics, and basic starting weapons.
      • Get double the resources from searching and harvesting objects.
      • Watch for Airdrops between waves for some much-needed supplies.
      • You don’t keep any weapons or traps when the experience concludes, so use those Legendary weapons and traps as if your life depends on it!
    • Keep an eye out for the Krampus Smashers who dwell in these cold regions. They’re dangerous but drop some much needed BluGlo.
    • When a player is knocked out they enter spectator mode until the remaining players complete the wave.
    • The longer you survive the more Snowflake Tickets you will earn! Tickets can be spent on the new Winter Llama.
    • Added several event quests that can be completed by playing Frostnite.
    • Be on the lookout for weekly challenges in the coming weeks!

Fortnite Version 6.1 Brings New Two Person Vehicle, BR Tournaments and Beta STW Improvements

Posted on October 16, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

The latest version update for Fortnite is here and with it comes a whole pile of new content for both Save The World and Battle Royale players alike. With this patch a brand new major features rolls out for Battle Royale fans – official tournament support. It looks like Epic Games will be holding officially sanctioned tournaments for players within set dates / time-frames. Over on the Player Versus Emvironment the long awaited return of a spooky assault rifle, an event store update and a brand new “beta storm” feature that allow Heroes to test their strength against experimental concepts and mission variations.

Tournament Support

Official tournaments can now be found in all versions of Fortnite: Battle Royale in the shiny new “events” tab. Here official tournaments will be listed with a set time. Tournaments are open for anyone to enter and every time you start a new tournament you’re given a clean slate. Completing objectives like killing opponets, making it into the top 20 etc earn points which can be redeemed for “pins”. What pins do, aside from being a badge of success is unknown at this time. Maybe next season they’ll unlock cosmetics with the next Battle Pass?

As taken from the Patch Notes:

Tournaments can be found inside of the new ‘Events’ tab available in game.  This tab will host a variety of online competitions which are open to everyone.  Jump in and explore!

  • Each tournament has a series of scheduled dates and times that the competition will be run. A carousel of all upcoming competitions and times will be available for browsing, so you can plan and practice.
  • Every scheduled session is a completely clean slate with all players starting on an equal footing at the beginning of play.
  • Compete over the course of several hours to earn points by eliminating multiple opponents or surviving against the competition.
  • Players are matched against opponents with similar scores during the session.
  • Score enough points during any scheduled event session and you’ll earn a golden pin for that tournament!

Save The World: Fixing The Taxi Problem

“Taxiing” – the practice of low power level players being brought into higher level content that they wouldn’t otherwise have access too has been the bane of the Fortnite: Save The World community for a while now. It isn’t that lower power level players are bad at the game, rather that because of their level disparity with the rest of the party, they are unable to contribute the proper amount of damage and in some cases can be one-shotted by regular husks.

To fix this issue Epic Games has instituted major changes to the minimum power ratings required for missions. In a public setting (matchmaking) the power level of lowest level player is taken as the minimum for what missions the party is eligible to enter. For private games the party leaders power level is the deciding factor.

Here is the breakdown:

Missions:

  • Power Level Restrictions
    • The minimum power ratings on missions are now enforced depending on the privacy setting of your party.
      • If your match is set to “Public” then the lowest power rating in your party (ignoring any party boost) will determine which missions are available and which are locked.
      • If your match is set to “Private” or “Friends Only” then the group leader’s personal power rating is used instead.
    • This prevents low-level players from being brought up into public high-level missions where they cannot contribute fully to the group, while maintaining the ability for friends to privately play together in high-level areas if they choose.
    • All Plankerton missions now have a minimum personal power rating requirement.
    • All Storm Shield Defense missions in Plankerton and above now have minimum personal power rating requirements.

Save The World: Beta Storms

“Beta Storms” allow for Epic Game’s developers to try out variations of existing content as well as experimental new content and share it with players. Currently the only Beta Storm available is a variation on the “collect the data” mission type. In this modified data retrieval mission the circle from the storm will close in on the landing site over time. Players will have to make the choice between fighting the husks right on the objective or wandering out into the storm and taking damage to eliminate the undead threat.

Here’s how the patch notes lay it all out:

  • Beta Storms are an avenue for testing all kinds of new content. This gives us a chance to see what you think of new content and experimental ideas.
  • Beta Storms are a limited-time Mission Alert. They’ll only stick around for a week or two, and then they’re gone.
  • This week, we’ve introduced a Retrieve the Data Beta Storm, along with a quest line with escalating rewards for trying out the Beta Storm.
    • In this new version of Retrieve the Data you are under pressure as the Storm closes in on the balloon’s landing spot.  The Storm will cause damage to you and force the combat into a smaller area when defending the Data. The mission is 20 minutes long and the only way to get the maximum reward is to shoot down the balloon as soon as allowed.
    • This Beta Storm ends when the v6.20 update arrives, so try it out while it’s available.

Wrapping Up

If you’re a Save The World player make sure to save up all the gold you can to grab the limited time Grave Digger assault rifle which hasn’t been available for almost a year now – it debuted during last year’s “Fortnitemares” event, which has yet to return.

Final Fantasy XIV Patch 4.3 Details Further Unveiled During Letter From The Producer Live

Posted on May 14, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

FFXIV’s next big update Patch 4.3: Under the Moonlight will be delivered to players on May 22nd it has been revealed during the latest entry in the Letter From The Producer Live live-streams. During the show with Producer / Director Naoki Yoshida, a special guest joined the show in the last half – none other than the creator of Italic himself – Yasumi Matsuno, to further discuss the second tier of the Return to Ivalice raid series.

The Main Scenario Continues
As with every major patch released for Final Fantasy XIV, the Main Scenario revolving around the player character and the Scions of the Seventh Dawn continues for yet another instalment full of twists and turns. Patch 4.3 will see the storyline regarding the far eastern land of Doma come to a dramatic conclusion as the newly installed leader of Doma, Hien, grapples with a tense prisoner exchange with the Gatlean Empire. Can we trust the Empire’s intentions at face value? For a faction that has invaded Eorzea and caused a devastating calamity five years ago, there isn’t much reason to trust them.

Job Adjustments
Several jobs will receive adjustments as part of Patch 4.3, it was noted that the Tank role of Dark Knight could be due for a complete redesign but we shouldn’t expect it during this patch series – as this redesign would take at least six months of development time. Dark Knight, Monk, Astrologian, Black Mage, Samurai and Scholar will all receive adjustments with this patch.

• Samurai – Potency increases, Basic combo potency to be increased, possibility of empty control (remove empty like Machinist / Bard?) to be included with these adjustments.
• Dark Knight – Potency increase across the board, animation cool downs to be reduced, defence buffs.
• Astrologian – Cast times for Attack Spells reduced across the board, Lightspeed MP cost of affected spell reduced from 50% to 25%, Danage reduction effect currently on this spell to be removed.
• Scholar – misc Pet adjustments.
• Monk – Skills that allow Monks to reduce the amount of Emity they generate will be introduced.
• Ninja – Unspecified adjustments for use with the Deep Dungeon Heaven on High.

New Deep Dungeon: Heaven on High

Remember the Jenga tower in the Ruby Sea that the camera focuses on for a long dramatic pause before never being mentioned again? Players were correct in their assertion that this will be the new Deep Dungeon – similar to Palace of the Dead – with a focus on quick experience gain and it’s own levelling system. Rather than contain 200 floors of challenging MOBS, Heaven on High will feature 100 floors with the really hard content beginning on floor 31. It was also mentioned that a “grand summing” system will become available in Heaven on High, but what this actually entails is currently unknown.

Forbidden Land of Eureka: Pagos (To be introduced several weeks later in Patch 4.36)

Our last expedition to the Forbidden Land of Eureka seems like it has been a success with the announcement of the commencement of the Pagos expedition expected to be released sometime in June. This snowy region of the misplaced island of Val could very well focus on the Blizzard aspected aether that players use to defeat some of the Notorious Monsters across Val. Once players locked down the pattern of knowing the NM spawn times, moving as a cohesive “train” from Monster to Monster and power-levelling. The obvious problem with this system was that lower level characters could contribute to the battle against the stronger NMs like Pazuzu. Here’s hoping the vague promise of ‘new gameplay elements’ can make our time in Pagos engaging and entertaining.

Final Fantasy XIV Under The Moonlight will be released next Tuesday, May 22nd. Alongside everything outlined above it also brings a brand new 24-person raise, a new Extreme Trial, a mysterious unannounced Story related trial (it’s Zenos.. come it has to be) and the Ultima Weapon’s Refrain (Ultimate) – the next segment of the ultra-hard content for the top % of players. For further coverage check out my post from last month.

Small Hotfix Patch Released For Quake Champions Early Access

Posted on October 17, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

Yesterday Sabre Interactive & id Software released a small hotfix for the Early Access version of Quake Champions. These fixes come just two weeks since the latest game update which brought with it new content & champion adjustments but also had players reporting increased lag during matches / other performance issues and problems with the game’s’ social functions.

In addition to performance fixes related to the loading & unloading of characters, this hotfix also addresses problems that may occur when a player has a large number of friends on their contact list. Also added to the game is a brand new vanity item for Ranger, “The Keepers Head”, which ties into the upcoming The Evil Within 2.

Here are the full patch notes:

  • Fixed crash some players were experiencing on loading/unloading from game
  • Fixed crash some players were experiencing in customization screen when buying item with both platinum and shards at the same time
  • Fixed crash some players were experiencing on purchasing vanity items in customization
  • Fixed issue where players were being kicked from match while loading into Burial Chamber with the exception of the Spectator
  • Fixed in-game Contacts list so it properly shows player’s online/offline status and no longer causes performance issues with larger Contacts lists
  • Fixed issue when Spectating a player that died did not show the death animation and instead showed the player select screen
  • Fixed issue where Sorlag’s acid spit ability was doing double damage at certain distances
  • Improved double landing sounds for all Champions
  • ‘The Keeper’s Head’ vanity item added for Ranger. Instructions on how to obtain it can be found here: http://steamcommunity.com/game

Partial Player Data Reset As Massive Quake Champions Beta Patch Drops

Posted on August 3, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

The first patch for Quake Champions in nearly a month has finally arrived and with it comes a partial data reset for existing players. Beta testers should be familiar with the practice by now but since this is an open beta sometimes players are caught off guard by data resets and progression loss. Developers do this for a number of reasons: testing new systems, getting feedback on progression changes or deeply rooted system or data changes that necessitate players be taken back to square one.

As for what was reset: any challenge progression for challenges left incomplete and the overall statistics data for players accounts have been wiped. Unlocks like shaders/skins from Loot Boxes and purchasable vanity items have all been reset as well. Individual nicknames and skill ratings remain intact alongside unlocked champions.

Here is a segment from the recent patch notes:

Player content that will be reset include:

  • User States (Armors, Weapons, Attachments, Shaders, Currency)
  • Challenges

Content that will NOT be reset includes:

  • Champions
  • Friends
  • Skill Rating
  • Nicknames

Currently, the Quake Champions community is in the midst of a $1,00,000 world tournament on the road to this month’s Quake Con. Id Software and Sabre Interactive have said that they don’t want to shake up the game’s meta too muuch while the tournament is ongoing but there have been a number of game breaking bugs including rockets that do 0 DMG and stuttering lag that hamper the online experience. With that being said this patch is more of a collection of long requested fixes and tech tweaks – you’ll see very little Champion balancing happening during the Regionals.

Previously Quake Champions only had a very basic friends list with CBT 13 a whole number of social options including spectating friends, ignoring players and a reporting system to root out abusive players.

New Social Screen

  • Player can observe all current in-match players and blocked players
  • Player can now blacklist players, which blocks invites from unwanted users
  • Player can now ignore user invites
  • Player can now report users

On the tech side of things id & co have fixed several issues with system auto detect, implemented a new “play now” screen and introduced some fixes for the ever present memory leaks which have plagued the game since the first Closed Beta but this issue has been steadily improving with each major patch.

Tech

  • Fixed an issue that could occur when the game would not revert to the player’s native resolution when changing to Borderless mode with a lower aspect ratio.
  • Fixed a localization text issue
  • Updated the list of supported video cards for a correct auto-detect
  • Fixed an issue where killed players could become stuck in place and invincible
  • Fixed an issue where local configurations would not be saved properly when including Cyrillic letters
  • Fixed an issue where Champions were not synchronized with moving objects

Performance

  • Optimized various memory leaks

New Play Now Screen

  • New screen layout integrated
  • Player can choose multiple game modes in quick match and match-make between them randomly
  • Tutorial videos available from Play Now screen

Clutch has seen the most adjustment of any Champion in the game. Originally positioned as a Tank class hero with a strong barrier shield, Clutch was later on adjusted to include the ability to float through the air while deploying its shield. This was later patched out and now Clutch is the focus of the majority of the Champion adjustments – with a new acceleration icon and several small statistics changes.

Perhaps the one bug fix everyone in the Quake community has been finally implemented: Rocket Launchers finally work again! No more Nyx players taking three rockets to the face without taking a single point of damage. Rockets also no longer penetrate Clutch’s shield.

Balance

  • Clutch’s “Advanced Shielding” passive has been removed
  • Clutch’s Active Ability cool-down has now been set to 40 seconds
  • Clutch’s Health and Armor stats revised: Health from 150/150 to 100/100; Armor from 50/100 to 100/150
  • Slash’s Starting Armor increased +25 ap
  • Profile Progression: XP requirements tweaked
  • Random Drop: Rebalance of drop rates in Backpacks Crates and Reliquaries
  • Crafting: Item prices in shards and dismantle values changed

Champions

  • New effect for Ranger’s Dire Orb
  • Fixed a light effect issue affecting Anarki’s Banner vanity item
  • Fixed an issue affecting audio during Anarki’s hover board movement
  • Fixed issue that could occur with BJ Blazkowicz’s shooting animation while dual-wielding
  • Fixed a twitching animation issue with BJ Blazkowicz after being shot while idle
  • Enemies within 120u of the player are outlined
  • New Clutch acceleration icon added
  • Fixed an issue where rock and drill medals pop without hitting the 1000 damage requirements
  • Fixed an issue when RL damage through Clutch’s shield

Doomfist Arrives On Live Servers With New Overwatch Patch!

Posted on July 27, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

Overwatch’s 25th hero, Doomfist, has finished his testing phase on the PTR and is now live on the PC and console versions of the game. Alongside the release of Doomfist – who has been adjusted considerably since his initial reveal – this latest patch brings a number of changes to player mobility across a number of heroes and voice lines for both D.VA and Genji.

Doomfist

I’ve covered Doomfist in the past two weeks a couple of times. So to get a quick impression of what he is capable of, here is a summary of his abilities that I posted a few weeks back. Primarily his adjustments on the PTR involved how far his rocket punch and uppercut abilities launched opponents and moved. The actual functionality of the moves hasn’t really changed.

Doomfist Abilities:

Hand Cannon – Fires short ranged projectile from the knuckles of his smaller hand. Ammunition is automatically regenerated over time.
Seismic Slam – Doomfist leaps forward into the air and smashes down to the ground affecting any foes below him.
Rising Uppercut – Launches enemies that are in front of Doomfist into the air.
Rocket Punch – A powerful charge forward that completes with a massive blow from Doomfist’s mechanical arm.
Meteor Strike (Ultimate) – Leap into the sky and then come crashing down to deal damage and stun opponents.
The Best Defense (Passive – Gain a temporary shield when dealing ability damage to opponents.

Movement Changes

Mcree’s flash bang now slows targets considerably faster than before. This means that a swift striking Genji can’t dodge the slowing effect of the Flash Bang’s stung.

Graviton Surge, Zarya’s ultimate ability, now stops all hero movement for those in the affected area. This means that using Genji’s Swift Strike or spending all of Tracer’s blink charges are no longer viable strategies to escape the Gravity well. Ditto for Mercy’s shift ability which allows her to fly towards a friendly target.

Highlight System

Remember that highlight system that Jeff Kaplan talked about during a recent developer update? It is now live on PC! Overwatch will now curate your top 5 daily clips and store them for a full 24 hours. Players are also now able to generate 12-second clips by using a new bindable record button. One thing to remember about these highlights is that they are only valid until the next patch – regardless if it is a major or minor addition to the game. Make sure to export your highlights often!

Here is how Blizzard described the new system:

“The game will continue to automatically generate highlights for you based on your recent gameplay. These auto-generated highlights—now categorized as “Today’s Top 5”—will be surfaced on a daily basis and persist for a full 24 hours (or until the game client is patched, whichever happens first).

Players can now generate their own highlights! The ability to capture 12 seconds of your own gameplay has been added to the game, and can be bound to a single button of your choice (or a button per highlight slot) in the Options menu under “Request Highlight.” These player-generated highlights will be saved under a new section called “Recently Captured” and will persist until the game client is patched. Players can have up to 36 recently-captured highlights stored at one time.

With the above, players can now record any of their “Top 5” or “Recently Captured” highlights, exporting them as a video file to their gaming platform’s designated media library (on console) or directory (on PC). On PC, players will also have the option to select the quality at which these highlights are exported, supporting up to 4K for Windows 8 or higher operating systems, and up to 1080p on Windows 7.”

Star Wars Battlefront February Patch Notes Released

Posted on February 23, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Fans of EA/DICE’s multiplayer centric shooter set in A Galaxy Far Far Away will be happy to learn that the pair has revealed the official patch notes for the upcoming February content drop.  As previously announced a brand new map will become available when this patch drops – Twilight on Hoth  which supports a whole bunch of modes including – Walker Assault, Supremacy, Turning Point, Blaster, Fighter Squadron, Drop Zone and Heroes & Villains. A new survival map also set on Hoth – “Ice Caverns” – will also be made available for the single player wave survival mode.

In terms of other smaller but impactful changes: Primary weapons will now do 10% more damage against vehicles. The ION torpedo has had its speed increased by 30 meters per second while using the Pulse Rifle players will suffer a 30% movement decrease and finally the pre-lobby countdown timer has been decreased from 30 seconds to 20 seconds.

There’s a whole bunch of other stuff in the official patch notes which you can read after the jump. Here’s hoping that Twilight on Hoth lives up on the original Walker Assault map that shipped with the game.  Read More

LoL Preseason Breakdown, Everything you need to know

Posted on November 5, 2015 by Broken Joysticks

League Of Legends Logo 2015

League of Legends preseason is coming up, and that means everything is about to change. We have a lot of official information from their site and unofficial information from the PBE.

Most champions with Mana as a resource are getting new mana pool sizes and scaling to adjust for mana pots being removed, and several less viable champions are getting reworks. This article will be focusing on the item changes.

The first thing to note is an item overhaul for what they’ve dubbed “marksman items.”

This is a misleading name as these same items are also used for many auto-attacking/AD scaling champs.

The reason it’s about “marksmen” is this is Riot’s personal name for what most people call the AD Carry. These item changes will affect every single physical damage based champ in an overall, probably positive way.

Riot has realize that ADCs have one or two correct item builds per Champ, and most of the champs all share the same item build. Infinity Edge is almost always first item, because almost all ADCs build Critical %. This is not changing,  IE is still the prime crit item, but they’ve buffed MANY other items to make them viable starting choices

Some recipes have been changed, some items have been removed, but I’ll start by focusing on the item changes for top tier, complete items, the ones you’ll be getting end game.

Masteries have been overhauled, there is a free example mastery editor out here: http://efferentinc.com/wp-content/lol6calc/index.html#

For those of you who have played StarCraft or its 2010 sequel will instantly recognize her. During development she was simply known as “The Medic” before being given a more formal name.

Her basic abilities allow Lt. Morales to heal 20% of a teammate’s health or grant them a significant damage reduction. Her Heroic abilities allow her to grant allies an absolutely unheard of attack speed bonus or call in the iconic StarCraft Medivac for transport and healing.

There are a whole swath of Hero and Gameplay adjustments. Click here for the full breakdown from Blizzard.

You can read Lt. Morales’ abilities below as well as her debut trailer.
