Pokémon Crystal coming to Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS on January 26th

Posted on December 14, 2017 by Jason Nason

When it launched in Japan 17 years ago, Pokémon Crystal introduced many new and exciting elements to the beloved Pokémon franchise. The game, an expanded version of the popular Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver games, was the first in the Pokémon franchise to allow players to choose between a boy or girl playable character, as well as being the first game to introduce animations during Pokémon battles.

Now this groundbreaking game is coming to Nintendo eShop on the Nintendo 3DS family of systems on Januart 26th for only $12.89 CAD.

On the day it launches, Pokémon Crystal will also be compatible with Pokémon Bank, a paid service that lets players bring select Pokémon from classic core games to the newest core games in the series. With the addition of Pokémon Crystal to this service, it is now possible for players to bring Pokémon from all 29 core games in the series to Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon.

In this version of Pokémon Crystal, players will also have the chance to encounter the mythical Pokémon Celebi in an event after completing the game. In the original Pokémon Crystal game, Celebi could only be obtained by using a special accessory.

As with the Nintendo eShop editions of Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver, Pokémon Crystal will take advantage of the wireless communication capabilities of the Nintendo 3DS family of systems, allowing players to enjoy Link Trades and Link Battles with each other. With the Time Capsule feature, players can even trade and battle Pokémon from Pokémon Red, Pokémon Blue and Pokémon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition, which are all also available in Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS.

Pokemon From Generation III and Real Time Weather Coming To Pokemon GO

Posted on December 7, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

Pokemon from the Hoen region are about to find their way into our world with the rollout of pocket monsters from Generation III in Pokemon GO. Over the next few weeks, Niantic will make 50 different monsters from Ruby and Sapphire catchable in the augmented reality game.

Also coming to Pokemon GO for the first time is real-world weather that will affect gameplay. No longer will it be pouring rain on your virtual self while back, in reality, it is bone dry. Weather in POGO won’t just be cosmetic either, it will change which monsters you might find in the wild as well as other factors like combat power and stardust.

Here is what Niantic’s official press release said about the upcoming weather feature:

“For the first time in an augmented reality mobile game, the real-world weather will now be a factor in the gameplay experience. As Trainers are exploring the world around them in search of Pokémon, the current weather in their vicinity will be visible on the in-game map. The real-world weather around Trainers will impact the gameplay of Pokémon GO in a variety of ways that include changing Pokémon habitats and where they can be found, increasing Combat Power, and earning more Stardust after catching a Pokémon.”

Is the addition of monsters like Torchick, Mudkip and Swablue enough to keep you playing? Pokemon GO might not be the mega-smash success it once was back in the summer of 2016 but millions of Pokemon trainers still log in daily to catch them all!

Huge Splatoon 2 Update Splashes On To Nintendo Switch Tomorrow

Posted on November 22, 2017 by Rae Michelle Richards

Nintendo is going to unleash possibly the largest post-release update to Splatoon 2 tomorrow that brings with it new stages, an increased level cap, holiday themed weapons and so much more.

Like with previous content drops the four brand new stages won’t be immediately available once tomorrow’s patch goes live. Instead they’ll be drip fed to players over the course of several weeks to give Squid Kids something to look forward too through the early winter. Splatoon 2’s first brand new stage is the shopping mart styled MakoMart which will go live on Black Friday, November 24th. Walleye Warehouse and Arowana Mall will make a return from the original Splatoon on Wii U sometime in the future.

Other quality of life improvements coming to the game include the ability to swap out weapon and clothing loadouts between matches without having to exit the lobby screen – in my opinion this is one of the biggest ones. While going back to Inkopolis Square is fun, especially to look at the memes, it does break the flow a bit. For all those max level squids out there, the maximum ranking is being increased to 99 with this patch as as well.

With over 140 pieces of gear coming in tomorrow’s patch – which include some fashionable new winter gear and a new mode coming in the December Patch, it looks like there is a lot of life left in Splatoon 2!

Check out some screen-grabs from the trailer below, as well as Nintendo’s official descriptions of the major additions coming with the November and December updates.

Some action shots from inside the shopping center map. Get your black friday deals on fresh INK!

You have to have the latest black & white filter to STAY FRESH

Official Nintendo Provided Patch Notes:

Nov. 23 Update

  • Four New Battle Stages: While four new battle stages are coming to Splatoon 2, they won’t all be available immediately after downloading the update. Like with previous additions, the stages will roll out over the subsequent weeks, giving players new surprises as they play throughout the holiday season and beyond. The first new battle stage, MakoMart, will be available to play on Black Friday, Nov. 24, with Shellendorf Institute, Walleye Warehouse and Arowana Mall coming soon. The new MakoMart stage is a giant superstore-style stage, so what better time to play than on Black Friday! Shellendorf Institute is new to the series, while Walleye Warehouse and Arowana Mall are popular stages returning from the original Splatoon game.
  • New Salmon Run Stage: Fan-favorite multiplayer mode* Salmon Run is getting a new stage. After downloading the update, Salmonid Smokeyard will be added to the stage rotation. In Salmonid Smokeyard, a wide gap on the beach divides two upper platforms, with fan lifts being the quickest way to traverse the two platforms. Teamwork is required to use the fan lifts effectively.
  • New Gear: Approximately 140 pieces of gear are being added to Splatoon 2. These include shoes, headgear and clothes, like a motocross mask, and additional winter clothing (perfect for the cold weather!), as well as returning items from the original Splatoon game.
  • New Battle Music: Two new bands have been gaining popularity in Inkopolis! The punk-flavored Bottom Feeders and classically trained avant-garde-style Ink Theory are contributing new songs to the already music-rich game.
  • New Hairstyle: When customizing an Inkling, four new hairstyles will be available to choose from – two each for female and male characters.
  • Higher Level Caps: Currently, players are maxed out at Level 50. After downloading the update, the new maximum level will be raised to 99. If players talk to Judd when they reach Level 99, they’ll have the option to reset their level display to Level ★1 so they can continue raising their level.
  • New amiibo Functionality: Tapping a compatible amiibo figure after the update will let players take and share in-game photos in preset locations in Battle Stages, in addition to being able to take photos in Inkopolis Square. Players can also add fun filters to their images.
  • Convenient Gear Swapping: Players that want to change gear between battles in Regular Battle, Ranked Battle and Splatfest Battle (Solo) won’t have to exit to the lobby anymore! After downloading the update, gear can be swapped out without leaving the match room, making it quicker to get back to splatting. For Regular Battle, this also means players can play the next battle with the same players.

Mid-December Update

  • Clam Blitz: In Clam Blitz, competing Inklings are tasked with collecting clams scattered around the stage. After one is picked up, the clam follows the player. The objective is to throw the clam into the basket near the opponent’s base. The first team to score 100 points wins! But, of course, this being the fiercely competitive world of Splatoon 2, things are not as easy as they seem. The baskets are protected by a barrier, which much be destroyed first. After collecting 10 clams, the player will earn a Power Clam. These super-powered clams are the key to breaking the barrier, so strategy will definitely be involved in which clams are used to destroy the barrier and which are used to earn points. Not to mention the extra-satisfying opportunity to steal opponents’ clams by splatting them…

Super Mario Odyssey | Review

Posted on November 16, 2017 by Meghan Kass

Mario has been a staple of the gaming industry since the very early arcade days when he was just a humble sprite named Jump Man who wanted nothing more than to save a poor woman he loved named Pauline from a beast, barrel throwing ape named Donkey Kong. Since those early days, things have changed immensely for our humble protagonist and he has since been on many adventures through many lands and beyond even to the galaxy. After Super Mario Galaxy however, a question entered the minds of me and my friends and that question was “Where could Mario possibly go exploring the entire galaxy?” and we joked and theorized, but we could not have possibly guessed the answer in store for us; that answer was possession. Yes, Mario and his new friend Cappy can possess various beings in the world in order to help him, of course, save Princess Peach; some things will never change. This time, however, there is a forced marriage to Bowser that needs to be foiled.

There are two main differences in this game. The first difference is the scale of the world and the second is the gameplay. Regarding the former, the world is simply put, huge. You may think the world is large during the story campaign, but once you complete the story you will see just how big in scale this game is. There are large areas to explore in this world and even beyond the world to the moon at one point. Each area is filled with so many nooks and crannies and secrets it took many hours to fully explore some places. Aside from just the aesthetic value, your main incentive for exploring and discovering each area’s secrets is to find Power Moons that give you moon power. What does moon power do for you? Well, it fuels and repairs your titular ship, The Odyssey and also gives completionist a nice long scavenger hunt challenge to find all the moons. Once you have the necessary moon power to fuel or repair your ship, you’re off to the next land. While in these lands, you will see how different the gameplay is to other Mario games.

Instead of just hopping on Goombas or swatting an enemy with a tanooki tail, you now have your friend Cappy who replaces your signature cap after Bowser destroys the original. Cappy can be thrown by Mario to kill enemies or even more fun, possess enemies to perform various tasks to either get past puzzles or get from platform to platform to get to particular parts in the world. You may need to possess a Goomba and jump on other Goombas to create a stack of them to reach high points or you may need to become a Hammerhead brother and knock down walls. The end of the game has a particularly special possession that really was a satisfying conclusion along with the end to the story campaign. You also can not ignore the joy of literally becoming a T-rex in a Mario game and smashing everything in your way. If you want to play along with a friend or partner or family member, there is a multiplayer mode similar to that of Mario Galaxy that allows for someone to control Cappy. Along with Cappy being able to change forms into various styles of hats, Mario too can purchase new outfits and styles in each level’s store with a special unique currency exclusive to that world. Each store different theme of clothes associated with the area you’re in.

Mario Odyssey is one of the most satisfying Mario games that I have experienced since Mario 64, way back in 1996. With many touching tributes to Mario past, exciting new gameplay and plenty of gorgeous lands to explore and all the hours of exploring and challenges, even if you are not a fan of Mario games, this is highly recommended. If you need a reason to get yourself a Nintendo Switch, this is it. I foresee this game making plenty of critic top 10 lists for the year, and it isn’t without reason. Mario Oddsey is truly a special experience and shouldn’t be missed.

Fire Emblem Warriors | Review

Posted on November 15, 2017 by Meghan Kass

In 2014,  Hyrule Warriors was released by Koei Tecmo, Ninja Theory and Omega Force. These developers had a novel idea, to combine Dynasty Warriors and The Legend of Zelda. It was a beautiful game that got better than average critical reception and was a unique use of both the combat style of Dynasty Warriors and the characters and world of Legend of Zelda. It is now 2017 and it has brought with it a new entry into this fusion of Nintendo franchises and Dynasty warriors, Fire Emblem Warriors. While Ninja Theory and Omega Force stayed on the development team for this game, Koei Tecmo was not involved and instead Intelligent Systems contributed their talents. Does the change make the difference? Has 3 years been enough to learn and improve on the already well done Hyrule Warriors to make Fire Emblem Warriors the best possible product?

In short, Fire Emblem Warriors is fine. It is on par with Hyrule Warriors, if not graphically more impressive. As far as the gameplay is concerned, the major change between Hyrule and Fire Emblem is the tactical element. In keeping with classic Fire Emblem, you can issue your warriors tactical commands along with the game having the hack and slash Dynasty Warrior combat. This tactical element definitely improves this game as you can more easily manage characters to go to certain areas of a map or perform certain tasks to complete your goals. Of course, you can also switch between certain characters when needed as per usual Dynasty Warriors gameplay. Unfortunately, unless you are playing on the hardest difficulty, the game is not hard and does not a lot of strategy to get through. If you are looking for a challenge, start on the hardest difficulty and just jump right in. I personally breezed through missions on normal mode and would occasionally go back and replay some missions on the hardest difficulty just to challenge myself. There is also an easy mode as well if you have trouble with hack and slash type games. The game does increase in difficulty a bit as you go on, but after getting used to the gameplay and mission types, it shouldn’t be a problem. Local or, “Couch” co-op is also available for this game just like Hyrule Warriors. I found the co-op to be fun, though the split screen can be a little squashed and at times the game would lag if there were too many enemies on the screen at one time which was quite annoying considering the appeal of Dynasty Warriors lies in the destruction of many enemies at once. Surprisingly, the controls for multiplayer on the Switch were better than anticipated. I did not think splitting the joycons was going to work and I would have to buy a whole new controller, but to my surprise they were fine split up and it didn’t really hinder the gameplay.

If it feels I am focusing mostly on the gameplay, that is because that is the meat and potatoes of this game. There is a story, but it is fairly lackluster compared to the gameplay. You start as either Rowan or Lianna and you must join with various Fire Emblem characters must stop evil from being revived and destroying the world by finding “Gleamstones” and recruiting warriors to help in the fight.

Overall, this is a fun and well made game that is a welcome addition for Fire Emblem and Dynasty Warriors fans. If you enjoyed Hyrule Warriors, this should definitely be on your radar. Unless you are not into Fire Emblem at all, you should definitely check this game out and enjoy all the fun of Fire Emblem’s world with some Dynasty Warrior flavor.
