Super Mario Maker Drives Wii U Sales Up 110% For September!

Posted on October 21, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Mario Maker

Sales of Nintendo’s current generation platform, the Wii U increased an impressive 110% when compared with August 2015. Nintendo attributes this absolutely impressive uptick in sales to the release of Super Mario Maker which has moved over 500,000 units in the U.S.A since launching on September 11th.

To quote Nintendo’s press-release, since they put it best:

Perhaps the biggest impact however has been on hardware sales. For the full month of September, sales of Wii U hardware in the United States increased by nearly 110 percent over sales in August. Software sells hardware and no one sells hardware like Mario.

Super Mario Maker sales data weren’t the only numbers included in Nintendo’s latest release. We also got some numbers for Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer which solved over 115,000 units in its first week of release.

Don’t forget that if you haven’t picked up Happy Home Designer it is also part of a special bundle with the smaller New Nintendo 3DS and an exclusive Isabelle faceplate!

Nintendo NX to have “industry leading chipset” hybrid design

Posted on October 17, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

Nintendo is not known for their consoles power. Histrically they have been under powered but innovative, with the last two being pioneers in motion control and second screen technologies. So it comes as a surprise when in an article in The Wall Street Journal, nintendo is quoited as saying the NX will also reportedly use “industry-leading chips in the devices that will presumably allow for better graphics and deeper functionality.” The article also reports that there will be at least two components to the system, one which can be used as a mobile component and one that can be used as a console. Each can stand on their own. This is not totally unexpected, i remember seeing lots of photos of travelling wii-u’s where only the game pad was being utilized, the one question this does leave me with is, how much? Small screens aren’t inherently expensive but if i have to pay DS level prices for the controller piece of my console it might dissuade me from buying it.

The game has spawned a sequel, there is a third 3DS game on the way in 2016, there are spinoff iOS and Android apps, a Just Dance special edition for the Wii U, and there is a spin-off game called Yo-Kai Watch Busters coming for the 3DS.

There are also three manga adaptations, a crossover game with Koei Tecmo’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms on the way, and an anime, which just started in North America. That can be seen on Teletoon in Canada.

Pokemon GO is getting a huge amount of funding from big names

Posted on October 16, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

Google, Nintendo, and the Pokemon Company are reportedly pouring money on to Niantic Labs, the developer of Pokemon GO.  Pokemon go the recently announced AR pokemon game made by the company that made Ingress was launched to incredible fanfare in early September of this year. Initial reports said the PR demo video was too good to be true, but reports coming out of the company now cite Google, Nintendo and The Pokemon Company as each pouring at least 10 million dollars each in to the games development. Initial worries that the game was not to be a core property and that it would suffer a quality drop because it was a mobile game, seem to have been silenced by this avalanche of money.

The CEO of Niantic, John Hanke, spoke briefly about where the newly acquired funds would be headed.

“The Pokémon Company, Google and Nintendo are incredible investors and strategic partners to help build the next chapter for Niantic. We will be using this capital to continue the development of Pokémon GO, to evolve and grow Ingress and its thriving global community, and to build out our real-world gaming platform.”

We still know very little about how the new game might work, but Ninite has experience developing AR games in the past, and I for one trust them to not take this IP and damage it. To see what we do know about the game already check out the video below.

Dedicated Fans Develop Twilight Princess HD Texture Pack

Posted on October 4, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

It looks like one particularly dedicated The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess Fan has decided to take it upon themselves to develop an updated texture pack for the nine year old Nintendo Wii / Nintendo GameCube title.

Running off of the very popular GameCube/Wii emulator Dolphin this project aims to clean up some of the standard definition textures while adding a bit of a touch of Skyward Sword’s art-style. This isn’t a complete remake but rather touching up assets that already exist.

Project developer Tomoya describes the upgrade as follows:

I’ve decided to retexture Twilight Princess GC! I wanted to keep the original textures, but convert them into HD format as much as possible, and also add a little Skyward Sword style. Twilight Princess was suppose to aim towards a dark look+feel, but failed miserably by the power of blurry/ugly textures. The game also lacks lighting effects and shadow effects, so I’m working on getting shader addons(ReShade, SweetFX, etc.) to become compatible with the game. I’m aiming to get SSAO or HBAO, and DoF to work properly. I’ve seen some people that had success with some effects, but no tutorial. I NEED SOME HELP WITH APPLYING THOSE EFFECTS! I really want to get Twilight Princess polished as much as possible. The textures, that I’ve done, are looking beautiful, but the lackluster of HBAO, SSAO, and DoF is killing the feel. I know it’s possible to get the effects working because I have successfully implemented HBAO and DoF on the Project64 ROMS(Majora’s Mask, OoT, and Conker.) So yeah…

Check out all of these visual upgrades in motion in the video below which amassed over 20,000+ views after being featured on R/Gaming. I personally think this looks absolutely amazing both in still screenshots and when streamed.
