Broken Bootlegs- My Experience with Power Joy

Posted on April 6, 2016 by Erika

Power-Joy

Broken Bootlegs is a series covering unlicensed games (also known as bootleg games) for mainly 8-bit and 16-bit consoles. This week’s edition is covers my experiences with my first bit of pirate hardware that originally my interest in playing around with bootleg games and hardware: the Power Joy.

It what seems feels a very long time ago, which probably was a little over a decade ago, I was traveling around going to garage sales looking for anything computer or video game-related like I usually do. I eventually happened upon something very unusual: a white device in the shape of a Nintendo 64 controller with a Playstation 1-styled controller that could hook into the former, and a very odd-looking cartridge that was attached bottom of first controller. Nothing else came with it except a cardboard box that had POWER JOY printed on the side. After buying it and taking it home, I found some batteries to put into it, hooked it up to my tv and after turning everything on, I saw a menu that had “64-in-1” at the top of it. I start going though some of the games like Aladdin, Circus Charlie, Karate, Formation Z, and some light gun games, to name a few. Read More

Nintendo to Discontinue DSi Shop in 2017

Posted on April 3, 2016 by Jason Nason

This is your one year warning. Nintendo recently announced hat in they plan to close the Nintendo DSi Shop in 2017. The digital game service was the predecessor to the eShop and has been available on the Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DSi XL systems since 2009.

If you have Nintendo DSi Points to spend or you have deleted downloaded Nintendo DSiWare software from your system, you may want to make plans to get those titles in order. Games previously downloaded can be redownloaded until March 31st, 2017 but after that will be unavailable. If you still have an old Nintendo DSi kicking around you can also transfer those games to your Nintendo 3DS, though any downloaded DSiWare titles can still be played long after the closure of the DSi Shop.

For the time being you can still add Nintendo DSi Points to your account. This can be done up until September 30th, 2016. Content can be purchased in the Nintendo DSi Shop until March 31st, 2017. The ability to re-download Nintendo DSiWare games will stop at some point, but details on just when that will happen aren’t clear at the moment. Also Nintendo DSiWare will continue to be sold in Nintendo 3DS eShop

Surprise, The Internet Loves Miitomo – Combining Miis & Cats Is The Best Thing Ever!

Posted on April 1, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

The internet loves adorable kitty cats and memes, right? Well, we can add Nintendo’s first mobile title Miitomo to that list as well, for the time being. The company’s first mobile offering is currently trending in top 10 on Twitter with over 135K tweets about the game. Sadly over on Facebook the story isn’t exactly the same, as of publication time Miitomo is not trending. However, for those who doubted Nintendo’s presence carrying over into the mobile space, this just shows that there is an appetite for Nintendo content on smartphones.

Miitomo is the first free-to-play mobile game from the company long known for Mario and single handedly reviving the video games industry in the 1980s, among other accomplishments.  For Nintendo Miitomo represents a shift away from their traditional release model of tying their exclusive games to proprietary hardware to more open mobile platforms like Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android operating systems.Read More

Kirby: Planet Robobot new side game videos

Posted on March 27, 2016 by Jason Nason

Nintendo and HAL Laboratory’s upcoming Kirby: Planet Robobot doesn’t come out until June 10th, but the game is nearing its release at the end of next month in Japan. While there aren’t a lot of information on Nintendo of America’s website yet (no official site has launched, just the game page) there is a full site over at Nintendo of Japan.

While I can’t read what any of it says, there are a few fun videos that were just updated which show two subgames.

In case you’re not sure what this game is about, here’s the plot of the main story.

Harness the power of a mysterious mech to stop ruthless invaders from mechanizing Kirby’s home world. Smash through tough obstacles, lift heavy objects with ease, and scan enemies to shape-shift into new Modes with powerful abilities. Kirby’s Robobot Armor can shape-shift into different modes by scanning enemies to copy their moves—like the new Jet Mode. Not to mention, Kirby™ can copy abilities the old-fashioned way too—by inhaling them!

Posted on March 26, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

It was too good to be true, the NX news which we reported on last week  has been exposed as  fake. The images which were first revealed in this reddit post have been revealed to be fake. Their creator took to youtube to discuss how he managed to create the 3D printed “prototype” In the video which is right after the jump you can see his whole design process and how he took the current bevy of rumors and synthesized them in to the “leaked prototype”

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games | Review

Posted on March 25, 2016 by Jason Nason

Did you ever have something in a game that really rubs you the wrong way and no matter what you do you can’t get passed it? It scan be a small thing, which isn’t even that big of a deal. But it just angers you every time you think of it?

I had that with Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games for the Nintendo 3DS. It’s not a big thing and by no mean breaks the game. I’ll get to exactly what that is later on in the review. (If you follow me on Miiverse you’ll already know what it is.) It certainly doesn’t run the game, but it did lower my final score.

Aside from the above, I loved this game. The number of events included is extensive, the control options are varied, and the single player mode is actually quite fun.

Are these new images of the NX controller?

Posted on March 23, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

New images of the development kit version of the Nintendo NX controller have leaked thanks to Perkele37 on Reddit. We now have an up & close look at the controller in much higher detail than the previous leaked photos. From these photos it is quite clear that the NX’s thumbsticks are physical nubs, not unlike the Vitas, and not on-screen controls as some had suggested. We also now know that the development hardware supports 3.5mm headphone audio output and features haptic feedback similar to Apple’s force touch.

Here are the brand new details leaked by Perkele37:

  • Only the upper ‘nubs’ of the sticks move. The bottom part is static (kind of like the circle pad, but it moves along the bottom ‘sphere’.
  • The rollers on the top feel and look pretty much identical to a mouse scroll-wheel. Though I do don’t believe this will be the final design.
  • Haptic feedback is feels like Apples ‘taptic’ engine. Not like regular rumble.
  • 3.5mm headphone jack on the bottom

Here are the images that went along with the post

Nintendo censors some games on Miiverse, but not in the way you think

Posted on March 21, 2016 by Jason Nason

Since Nintendo launched Miiverse I have to admit that I love it. Not just talking about games with other Nintendo gamers, but also sharing screenshots of the game. I don’t really go to Miiverse looking for gameplay help and I don’t really use it much as a forum to talk about games; my focus with Miiverse is taking and sharing screenshots of my games.

Nearly every game that was made after the implementation of Miiverse supports this. But not all of them, and it seems to be hit and miss as to what games don’t.

I recently picked up Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson for the Nintendo 3DS. When I hit the (home) button on my 3DS and tapped on Miiverse I found that this game doesn’t support Miiverse screenshots, despite the fact that the previous game in the series Senran Kagura Burst does.

Why?
