IMPRESSIONS: Mario Tennis Aces

Posted on June 5, 2018 by Jason Nason

I have a sort of love-hate relationship with sports games, and the Mario sports titles are no exception. When I’m getting it and winning I love them. When I’m struggling and not winning, not so much.

These impressions are based on the recent Mario Tennis Aces tournament demo.

In true Mario sports style the games played within, this time obviously tennis, can be played both in true simulation or with the wacky flair that only a Mario sports title could offer. And while the game is pretty fun to play in simulation, it’s the Mario style gameplay is where the game shines.

In addition to the Mario themes which exude throughout the game (Lakitu’s acting as ball boy is always funny), there are a bunch of special shots and moves in the game which blend right in and add to the fun. There is the zone shot which allows you to pinpoint any spot you want to aim at using motions controls and send the ball crashing down. Rivals must return shots with perfect timing…or after three hits, their racket will break. There is also a trick shot which lets you leap toward a distant ball and greatly increase your energy. This is a risky shot though and if your timing is late, you may lose the point or some energy. I’ll be honest this was a tough one for me to master in the demo, but was always satisfying when I was able to pull it off.

The special shot allows you to fire a super-charged shot when your energy gauge is charged to full. It uses up all your energy but might break your rival’s racket. You can also use something called zone speed which slows down the world around you giving you a reach those shots which are just out of reach.

You can also use regular shots like topspin shots, slices, flat shots, lobs, and drop shots.

The demo only had four characters to choose from at the start with the standard Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Yoshi available. However as you played against CPU opponents or took part in the online tournament demo, you earned points which allowed you to unlock some characters. These scores will apparently transfer over to the full game, so it’s possible that the unlocked characters will as well.

I only managed to unlock Waluigi before the end of the tournament weekend, but he was actually pretty fun to control.

While the demo only had a brief look at single player practice and tournament mode, the game will have many other modes including a single player adventure mode. In the adventure you’ll journey through the Kingdom of Bask. Control Mario to complete missions, take on bosses, and defeat the legendary racket.

Learning from the success of the Wii and taking full advantage of the Joy-Con’s motion abilities, in Swing Mode you can gently swing the Joy-Con controller like an actual tennis racket using motion control, and intuitively play as you use a variety of shots like forehand, backhand, and slice. The game will of course have local and online multiplayer as well.

The demo was a pretty solid look at how the game will feel when Nintendo releases it for the Nintendo Switch on June 22nd.

Arc System Works warns about streaming guidelines for BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle

Posted on June 3, 2018 by Jason Nason

Online of videogames has become a big thing in recent years. There are a lot of gamers on Twitch, YouTube, and most recently Facebook Gaming who play their games, stream them, and provide VOD after the fact for fans of the games and themselves.

Arc System Works has issued a reminder of some of their guidelines for online gaming content creators of some dos and don’ts when it comes to Arc System Works’ upcoming game BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle. The studio has stated that they want to give gamers the freedom to upload content, however when it comes to story mode, that is where most of the restrictions and guidelines will reside.

Here are the video/streaming guidelines as set by Arc System Works:

DO

  • Stream matches to your heart’s content. Either against other players (local or online), or against the CPU.
  • Put together tutorial videos to break down characters, teams, strategies, or show how to pull off that amazing combo.

DO NOT

  • Stream Episode Mode at all. Very short clips of Episode Mode content up to Chapter 2 are permitted for video content only.
  • Stream or upload any music-only content. Music playing in the background during matches, online lobbies, and etc are totally fine. A soundtrack rip or upload is not.

These rules, in general, apply across the board with Arc System Works games. Unfortunately, these rules are non-negotiable with the powers that be, and violating these rules could result in your channel being issued a content ID claim, or worse, a channel strike/account suspension.

Posted on May 29, 2018 by Jason Nason

Return to the Kanto region and experience a classic Pokémon journey in a whole new way. Nintendo and the Pokémon Company revealled today that there are two new Pokémon games coming to the Nintendo Switch this year. While the logos and names leaked earlier in the month, the news was made official today.

The pair of games are based on the special Pokémon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition game for the GameBoy which was originally released in 1998. The games are remade with the same visual style of the latest 3DS games Sun and Moon.

The game looks like it can be played with a single joycon and catching Pokémon is done with the same motion swing mechanic as in mobile game Pokémon GO. Not only that but the game will be compatable with the mobile game and allow trainers to transfer Pokémon between the new Nintendo Switch titles and Pokémon GO.

Also during the video presentation was displayed multiplayer allowing two trainers to play at once using a Joy-Con each. A special PokeBallPlus will also be released which will be compatable with Pokémon GO and can be used as a Joy-Con for the Nintendo Switch games.

Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! will be released on the Nintendo Switch on November 16th.

It was also announced that there is also a brand new mainline Pokémon RPG in development for the second half of 2019.

Sleep Tight coming to Switch/Steam in July

Posted on May 22, 2018 by Jason Nason

Sleep Tight, the arcade-style twin-stick shooter with base-building elements, is planned for release on July 26th for Nintendo Switch and PC.

The game is created by a veteran team of Hollywood film artists and AAA game developers, including VFX artist Maxx Burman (Far Cry 5Iron Man 3Game of Thrones) Disney illustrator Dylan Ekren (Wreck It RalphZootopia), and Ubisoft designer Oscar Mar (Far Cry 3Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: ConvictionRainbow Six Siege).

In Sleep Tight, players choose between a cast of 12 kids whose bedrooms are assaulted every night by hordes of monsters pouring out from the dark corners of their homes. Using an array of toy weapons ranging from dart guns to water balloons, players hold the frightening creatures at bay until sunrise. Then they can cash in their piggy banks to build elaborate pillow forts, construct turrets, and buy various other upgrades that will better help them survive increasingly difficult evenings to come.

Each of Sleep Tight’s dozen heroes comes with their own exclusive ability and playstyle. For example, the trigger-happy Tommy starts each match with 500 darts and gets discounts on Weapon Skills, while the comic book fan Dexter has superpowers that give him discounted power-ups, and Rosie uses her building skills to engineer turrets that deal more damage and extra strong pillow fort walls. Every child has their own specialty that keeps the game fresh no matter how many midnight monster hunts players go on.

Sleep Tight has been such a special project to work on,” said Maxx Burman, co-founder and creative director at We Are Fuzzy. “While our team has been lucky to work on so many amazing properties over the course of our careers, it’s been amazing to create such a warm, pure, nostalgic experience, and we look forward to sharing it with everyone when we launch this July.”

Circle bringing JRPG style Shadows of Adam to Switch

Posted on May 20, 2018 by Jason Nason

CIRCLE Entertainment and Something Classic Games have announced that the classically-styled RPG Shadows of Adam is coming to the Nintendo Switch.

Previously released on PC, Mac and Linux, this will be the console debut of the RPG. A game that brings classic JRPGs to mind, it features a compelling story, a unique fast-paced battle system and modernized visuals for a beloved genre.

Here’s the synopsis of the game. Tucked away from the outside world by the impenetrable haze of the Misty Woods, the village of Adam has mostly lived in peace since the days of the Wraith War. Magic, the dark power that fueled that war has vanished. But darkness is descending once more and Adam’s legendary hero, Orazio, is no more.

10 years ago he left without explanation and never returned, leaving his son and adopted daughter to wrestle with the dark secret he left behind—a secret that must now be revealed if the children hope to save both Adam and their departed father, though its revelation could unhinge the world.

The game is said to feature a compelling character driven story with a deep narrative and an interesting plot. The story revolves around 4 main characters: Asrael, Kellan, Curtis and Talon. The game also features some beautiful visuals inspired by classic JRPGs of the SNES-era. It also has an original soundtrack with over 44 tracks.

There isn’t a firm release date set for the game as of yet.
