With the launch of the Nintendo Switch system set for just over a week away, Nintendo has confirmed that Nintendo eShop will be ready to go, complete with a lineup of downloadable indie games. To celebrate many of these upcoming “Nindie” creations before launch, Nintendo will host a Nindies Showcase video presentation on Tuesday, February 28th, at 12:00 PM ET at http://live.nintendo.com.
Nintendo has stated that there will be more than sixty games in the eShop before the end of the year, including indie games, and digital versions of packaged games, DLC and more.
Three games will be ready for launch on March 3rd. Read More
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will launch for the Nintendo Switch and Wii U consoles in less than a month and Nintendo is planning even more for this, one of the largest, most engaging video games Nintendo has ever created. While the main game offers players an engrossing quest that will keep them entertained for hours, as well as the freedom to explore the vast Hyrule at their own pace, the game world provides a rich canvas that offers the opportunity for additional adventures.
As a result, the first-ever downloadable content for the main-line Legend of Zelda series is in development.
Nintendo will reward Switch early adaptors with a chance to try out this summer’s upcoming Splat Fest Splatoon 2 for one weekend only. After showing the game off during the Nintendo Switch reveal event last month members of the press & public got the chance to go hands on with the game and now the most hardcore Nintendo fans will get a similar chance for three days at the end of March.
Ninty will run 6 hour long Splatoon 2 test fires on the Switch for free on March 24th, 25th and 26th. In a short YouTube announcement trailer Ninty listed the following times for players:
March 24th 12 Noon – 1PM
March 24th 8PM – 9PM
March 25th 4AM – 5AM
March 25th 4PM – 5PM
March 25th 8PM – 9PM
March 26th 4PM – 5PM
BrokenJoysticks kicked off our coverage of Splatoon 2 with the reveal that the game’s single player will take place 2 years after the original game. The Nintendo Switch launches alongside The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on March 3rd.
It appears that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has gone gold according to a tweet by Monolith Soft developer which Google Translate reads as “A certain title launch party at a certain hotel in Kyoto”. Is this one game the next entry in the Legend of Zelda series? According to Neo Gaf user Steiner this is indeed the case.
It would make sense for Breath of the Wild to go gold considering it will ship alongside the Nintendo Switch in less than a month on March 3rd.
For the first time ever, Nintendo will run an ad during the Super Bowl. While last year’s Pokémon commercial was technically for The Pokémon Company, the 30-second spot is intended to build on the excitement for the upcoming new Nintendo Switch and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild game. Both the system and game are set to launch in Canada on March 3rd. The ad also features a new song by Imagine Dragons called “Believer.”
The ad is scheduled to run during the game’s fourth quarter this Sunday, February 5th.
“The most anticipated video game system and video game of the year will be seen on the biggest stage of the year,” said Nicolas Chavez, Nintendo of America’s Vice President of Marketing. “Nintendo Switch will change how, when and where people play games. It’s only fitting that we’re changing how, when and where we advertise those games.”
WHAT? Where was this news at the Nintendo Switch reveal? That’s right! I heard officially from a Nintendo PR rep at our recent Switch press event that yes, Splatoon 2 will indeed have a single player story campaign just like the first. So far we’ve only seen the multiplayer battle and some of the new weapons making this news HUGE! Splatoon 2 isn’t just a new block of updates on a new console, it really is a true sequel!
In my upcoming video interview you’ll get to see our conversation firsthand. I was mainly trying to see if there were further details like a new hub world or something amazing like apartments for your character. Neither of those details were confirmed or denied, but instead our gracious host did fill me in on the fact that there is more to do than just PVP battles in the new Splatoon title.
I know, it was probably to be expected, but now it’s CONFIRMED! Even when I was talking to other reps at the event, they were surprised to hear about the single player campaign. So I don’t know just how new this news is but a quick search online doesn’t reveal much about this confirmation at all! So there you have it folks. Stay fresh!
We’ve all seen the footage from the Nintendo Switch Reveal. Gamers have questioned just what was going to be worthwhile with this new console. Was it going to be the big new thing? Then there’s all that footage of that wacky game “Arms” with various boxing fighters with extendable arms! What in the WORLD is going on?
So today I got to check out the Nintendo Switch at a press event in downtown Toronto. Of course I was skeptical of Arms but I wanted to give it a go. If nothing else to have some video footage of myself flailing around while trying to play the game. Instead, I walked away thinking it was one of the two top games I enjoyed at the event!
No joke! I’m not being paid to say this. This isn’t some sort of ploy, it’s my personal opinion. I enjoyed Arms and it controls surprisingly well with very relaxed motions by the player. You don’t need to swing around wildly, though you can if you like. Otherwise you can play the game calm, cool, and in control of the bout.
First off, holding both the JoyCon controllers separately and attached with wrist straps is very comfortable! They’re incredibly light and comfortable. I think my wife put it best that they clearly seem to be made of plastic or the like, but they almost feel easier on your hands than you’d expect. In Arms you hold the controllers upright with the joysticks facing each other. This leaves your thumbs on top for surprisingly fitting control of the triggers and L/R buttons. These are actually used in the game to control your fighter along with motion controls.
Across the games I played, I experienced the rumble of these JoyCon controllers. As I’m sure you’ve seen, Nintendo is making a push to encourage gamers to take note of how they feel. I can’t recall if Arms did indeed use them, but I’m pretty sure it did. In general, it does oddly have that feeling of the “ice cubes in a glass” sort of expression that was mentioned in the Nintendo Switch reveal trailer. It’s like there are more rumble points or what not in the controllers. With how light they are too, it makes the feeling more noticeable. The best way I can describe it is different. It’s more of a unique experience.
Arms itself is controlled by leaning the JoyCon’s in the direction you want your fighter to move. You tilt them forward, backward, or to the sides to move. Combining that with jumping by clicking the R button at the top I do believe, and the L button to dash, it gives you a good range of moment. Also by tilting the JoyCon’s at each other you can block. The best part about this is, you feel in control. Wii Boxing was fun, but at times you sort of felt out of rhythm and like you were just flailing and the game was responding to you doing something, but wasn’t always sure what. When you move in Arms, your character moves. Really, I want more games with the controls Arms uses. I could see piloting a mech with the JoyCons like this and I really liked the feeling!
Mechanica I believe was the girl I first played as, which probably helped me get that mecha feel. Punching, much like the movement controls, just feels good! You jab or twist your punch in and your character reacts. Considering your long extendable arms in the game, they sort of track the other character to land each blow, especially across the arena. I’d need more hands on time to see just how you time your punches to beat down your opponent, but things got pretty neat. At times I missed, others my punches arced around and landed right on! I don’t blame the controls for this, I blame getting used to playing the game. However, I had some pretty sweet moments. One stage I was moving to position a pillar between my fighter and their opponent. Then from there I was arcing punches AROUND that pillar to still smack at them! Of course to keep things fair after a few volleys of punches, the pillar collapsed.
But wait, there’s more! Punching with both fists at the same time performs a grab move on your opponent. If not blocked, you pull them in and deliver a devastating wallop! A barrage of punches that land is probably just as effective, and the game does show damage numbers to indicate just how much you’re hurting your foe. However, with a grab you get in all that damage all at once if they don’t move out of your way and just let your gangly arms miss them. On top of all that you can build up a super move and unleash that with the triggers held at the same time. During this phase you can unleash a barrage of devastating punches in a row as fast as you can. Your opponent has super moves as well, so you’ll need to learn to dodge out of the way of their attacks.
Of course everyone at the event was there to make sure we had fun and the staff gave us lots of encouragement as we played our games. By the time I was making my rounds it was late in the day and everyone was pretty tired out. When I made it to the Arms display, the attendant that we got set up with was happy to show me how the game worked but was quite thrilled when we got into it. Sure, everyone wants to try out the games and just get a taste of it. It was near the end and no one was lining up so I got right into Arms. By the end our attendant was cheering me on as as struggled against Master Mummy who seemed to have two hands that almost resembled Bullet Bill’s for fists! As I tracked around the arena and managed to put some distance between us with those pillars I mentioned earlier, we were down to landing just one hit to win. My right hook went wide! Out in the open I was concerned this was game over. Then he faltered just for a moment and my left jab won the match!
It really was satisfying. Both the quality of the game and controls, as well as genuinely seeing our attendant getting so into the game. Our experience with Arms showed me there is more to it than flailing your arms madly at the TV. Instead you really are able to come up with some plan of attack and make your fighting style your own. Want to hop in the air constantly and pummel your opponent from above? Go for it. Is staying distant so you can time their punches and scoot to the side to avoid getting hit while landing well placed jabs? You can do that too! Want to just click dash and run in, punching like mad while hoping for a good outcome? Do that too! The game really is more than just Wii Boxing for the Switch with extendable arms. Let along the charm of the characters really drew me in. I knew nothing of the robot suit piloting Mechanica but I adored her.
The big take away from all this is that I want Arms. I want to own the game. It’s a game I would play and enjoy. Sure, I don’t know much about it yet and haven’t even begun to research the title, but I enjoy the gameplay! Playing Arms on the Switch feels good, and I want to experience that again. Sure, I want games like Zelda that I can plunk my butt down on the couch and explore hours upon hours of shrines throughout Hyrule. I also want to just get into Arms and do those over exaggerated movements that aren’t needed but just feel so good because the game reacts so well to my motions. It’s cool to see the evolution of motion controls, the comfort of the Nintendo Switch JoyCons, and most of all another new IP from Nintendo that I genuinely want to play!
Nintendo gave me a ton of options today to play anything I wanted. I’m glad I decided to give that silly stretchy arms title a chance. It made a lasting impression and showed off the Nintendo Switch very well!

Nintendo surprised Fire Emblem fans today via a Nintendo Direct announcement with news of multiple new games. We already knew about the upcoming game for the Nintendo Switch and a hint of a 3DS game from the official website, but there was much more news today.
In addition to these games we got our first glimpse of the Fire Emblem title headed to mobile devices in Fire Emblem Heroes.
“In recent years, the popularity of the Fire Emblem franchise has grown exponentially,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “The devoted fan base and series newcomers alike will soon have an abundance of new games to play on a variety of devices. There’s never been a better time to be a Fire Emblem fan or jump in for the first time.”
One of the surprise announcements during the Nintendo Switch livestream event, Atlus revealed that a new HD title in its long-running hardcore RPG franchise, Shin Megami Tensei will be coming to the Nintendo Switch.
The new game, which is known only with the placeholder moniker Shin Megami Tensei Brand New Title, will be released on the Nintendo Switch. No release date has been revealed yet.
While the game will very likely make its way west, there is currently no information about a localization for the title.
A Nintendo Direct dedicated to Fire Emblem will debut this Wednesday, January 18, at 5PM EST. Tune in for details on the future of the Fire Emblem franchise!
Getting your hands on a Nintendo Switch pre-order might be a little harder in the United States as GameStop USA has announced that they have reserved all units in their first allotment from Ninty. It took them just two days to burn through whatever % of the expected two million units that they were allocated for the March 3rd street date.
In a statement issued to GameSpot GameStop’s Marketing VP Bob Puzon said:
“The fact that this initial allotment has been completely reserved in a matter of a few days demonstrates gamers’ desire for this fun and revolutionary gaming system,”

As of press time (4PM MST January 16th) GameStops website reports that the Nintendo Switch is currently “unavailable”. Similarly a cursory glance at Amazon.com shows that the upcoming hybrid tablet is also sold out there as well. Looking through Canadian retailers things don’t look much better – Amazon.ca is completely sold out of pre-orders and EBGames (the Canadian equivalent of GameStop) shows a total unavailability of the upcoming console.
At this point no one is getting a Nintendo Switch if they haven’t ordered one already.
Nintendo Switch will launch on March 3rd worldwide with an expected install base of 2 million units with more to follow in the subsequent months. Do you feel that 2 million units is enough? Let us know in the comments section and while you are there why not speculate on exactly how much a Nintendo Switch will go for on Ebays once all of the day one pre-orders have been filled.
Two puzzle game juggernauts collide as Tetris, one of the largest-selling and recognized brands in gaming history, and Puyo Puyo from SEGA have combined to create a fun-to-play, fast-paced, competitive party game like no other!
The game will be released in North America and Europe on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in spring 2017.
Puyo Puyo Tetris will have a number of gameplay styles – from single-player Adventure and Challenge modes to competition with up-to-four player Arcade modes. Plus, an in-game Shop enables players to unlock new characters and skins for Puyos and Tetriminos.
SnipperClips is a physics puzzler designed for multiplayer co-operation for the Nintendo Switch. Despite that rather generic sounding description, it seems to be a stylish and charming co-op puzzler with a unique premise – the ability to modify the shape of your co-op partner to solve puzzles. Despite the game not having any elements that are unique to the Nintendo Switch it looks like the perfect game to play with close friends are family and the Switch’s portability lends itself to games like SnipperClips.
During the 5 hour Tree-house live-stream two Nintendo employees attempt to take on a handful of stages from SnipperClips. It starts out adorably enough with the pair of shapes – one yellow & one purple – forming a heart together and progresses from there. Basically when player 1 overlaps player 2 a button can be pressed to cut out the material from the other player. Throughout the course of the 12 minute demonstration we witness the partners work to sharpen a large pencil, attach a paper elephant to a balloon and score a three pointer thanks to a well placed basketball net. It is unfortunate that the pair gave up one particular puzzle that – at least to me – appeared to have more than one solution.
So what audience is perfect for SnipperClips? Well indie game aficionados? Yup check, folks who love indie games will gobble up this game but there is also one important audience that Nintendo helped bring to the gaming space along with smartphone companies – casuals gamers who wouldn’t otherwise be interested in the Nintendo Switch. For some reason, gods know why, the Big N decided that they should oppen their conference with “1… 2… Switch”, a game that doesn’t require players to look at the television or Switch screen at all.
They instead relegated SnipperClips to an end sizzle reel where if you’d blink you’d miss the like three seconds of gameplay shown at the end of the conference. “1..2.. Switch” simply confused people, and at one point more than one friend of mine thought the reveal of “1…2..Switch” was in fact a live action reveal for Red Steel 3, until further into that game’s debut trailer. Nintendo’s reason for spending so much time on a glorified party game with very little traditional game elements instead of a title like SnipperClips which while not making the best use of the new technology, offers a compelling gameplay experience that is easily understood and immensely adorable and would have resonated well with casual gamers in my opinion.

Nintendo and Mololith Soft announced during the Nintendo Switch presentation that a third game in the Xenoblade Chronicles series is in the works. The game comes after the original Xenoblade Chornicles for the Wii in 2012 and the spiritual sucessor Xenoblade Chronicles X on the Wii U in 2015. In the latest entry of the Xenoblade Chronicles series, a new hero will seek out Elysium on an immense journey through a brand-new world.
Xenoblade Chronicles was also ported to the NEW Nintendo 3DS in 2015 as well as Xenoblade Chronicles 3D.
Not much has been revelaed about the single-player role-playing game, which is listed for a release sometime in 2017. Check out below for screenshots from the game as well as the trailer presented on Thursday.
