Minecraft for Switch to receive cross-platform play and retail release in June

Posted on May 13, 2018 by Jason Nason

Minecraft is one of the best-selling video games of all time, selling more than 144 million worldwide across all platforms, including Nintendo Switch.

While the Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition game is currently available on the Nintendo Switch, this June will see the universal Minecraft Bedrock Engine come to the platform, along with a new physical version coming to stores at a suggested retail price of $29.99 USD.

This Bedrock version of the game contains all the great previously released content, including the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack exclusive to Nintendo systems and all DLC, but now allows players to connect with friends on non-Nintendo systems like Xbox One and Android mobile phones via cross-platform play. In addition, Minecraft will support the Nintendo Switch Online paid membership when it launches in September, as well as Xbox Live achievements and Gamerscore.

A new in-game store in this version of Minecraft called the Minecraft Marketplace will let players obtain community-created content like skins, worlds and textures for their Minecraft World using MINECOINS, a new virtual in-game currency. Players will also gain access to new mini-games and game modes through online community-run servers.

Players who already own the Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition game will be able to download this definitive version free of charge so they can easily upgrade and enjoy all the added features.

Posted on February 16, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Minecraft Wii U

This year at the Game Developers Choice Awards Marcus “Notch” Persson will be receiving the Pioneer Award for 2016. The Pioneer Award is given tho individuals who help develop breakthrough technologies and game design that set a new standard for the industry.

If you’re not aware of Notch’s multi billion dollar success story Minecraft then perhaps you’ve been living in one of the many caves dug by its players. Blending together survival elements, a rich crafting system, resource management and combat Minecraft helped pave the way for Early Access titles and the survival genre as a whole. With over 70 million copies sold between consoles (Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Vita), mobile and Windows PC it is no wonder that Microsoft decided to shell out $2.5 billion USD for the franchise in 2014.

Alongside Persson receiving his award – among the other great teams & individuals recognized at the GDC Awards, comedy duo Ashley & Anthony Burch will be presenting new original material created specifically for the show. The longtime games based comedy troupe Mega 64 will also be presenting an original video created spefically for the awards.

Festivities kick off at 6:30 PM PST on March 16th – if you can’t make it to the show in person the whole affair will be livestreamed over Twitch.TV as well. Staff from Broken Joysticks plan to be in attendance during the awards to bring you full coverage. More information about the awards can be found on their official website.

MINECRAFT WII U confirmed for december release

Posted on December 7, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

Minecraft Wii U

It was only a matter of time. Mojang have announced this morning that they will be brining their Billion dollar franchise to the Wii U console this month in time for the holidays.  In a post  on their front page containing a video interview with Jens ‘Jeb’ Bergensten we are treated to a little tongue in cheek press interview where we hear that “whats next for Minecraft” is that “were fixing boats oh and one more thing Minecraft is coming to nintendo Wii U” Honestly im less than surprised, this was about as destined to happen as  the sun to rise tomorrow. Mincraft is a huge franchise which already spans mobile, PS4, Xbox One, and PC it was a trivial matter that it would eventaully end up on the Wii U as well.

I may be worth picking up for this option “Minecraft: Wii U Edition will also feature off-TV play, so you can continue playing on the Gamepad when other people want to use the TV for less fun things like movies or other video games.” If you have ever played the mobile version of Minecraft you know that its pretty bare bones compared to the full play options on PC or Xbox. Perhaps this will give gamers their full mobile Minecraft fix. If you want to see the full 43 second video with Jeb click here.

Dwarf Fortress Gets an Update: WAIT WHAT?!

Posted on December 2, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

You read that headline right, good ole Dwarf Fortress is getting an update. After starting a Patreon and raising over 4,000$ a month, developer Bay 12 games has delivered on their promise. The first of what I assume will be many releases is now live, and it features a few new things as well as all the classic Dwarf Fortress goodness, and of course its still free.

The launch announcement does not mince words, it states: “The flow of fortress life is quite a bit different now—specific breaks and parties have been replaced by taverns and performances and needs and inebriation. You can designate a tavern, temple or library from a meeting area zone, bedroom or dining room using the new Assign Location option. The location list (‘l’) will let you know what sort of furniture and items you need, and you can set tavern keepers, scribes and other occupations there as well. You’ll need to set up a drink stockpile and a chest for goblets in taverns for drink service to work properly, but dwarves can still drink without a tavern as before. You can assign multiple rooms/zones to a single location.”

There’s a whole bunch more content in this update as well, new materials, new crafting, and some new intresting social stuff revolving around the tavern. Dwarves can now get drunk, pass out, and even die from drinking. So basically they added frat houses, ok maybe thats too mean, but this is certinly an interesting thing to add to a crafting a building game. Is a drunk dwarf still able to build? Harvest resources? I have no idea! Going to have to head over to http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/ to find out, good luck if you never played before because this game is deeeeep.

New features on a game that was released almost 10 years ago is something we don’t often see, and unless I am much mistaken this method of using Patreons month to month support model to fund a game that has been “infinidev” for almost 10 years is a first. I cant say I dislike it, but based simply on how much they are getting, if they dont keep pooping out content I fear the masses may get restless and the end result not be too pretty.

Minecraft Topples COD: Modern Warfare 3 For XBL Supremacy

Posted on October 25, 2012 by Rae Michelle Richards

The Xbox Live “most played” charts aren’t usually a site for heated competition between popular games but this week we have a new king in Mojang’s Minecraft. The Xbox Live version of the block building toppled Activision’s Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 for the most players on Microsoft’s Online service. Certainly MineCraft is no longer the small indie title that it was back in 2009 but it is still amazing to see a game developed by a small team dethrone a juggernaut like COD.

Older titles like Modern Warfare 2 and Halo: Reach are still in the top but with new entries in both of those series, Black Ops II & Halo 4, surely they will move down in the ranks to make room for newer games.

Here’s the top 5 Xbox Live games for last week:

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
EA Sports FIFA Soccer 13
Call of Duty: Black Ops

Minecraft Is Getting Bats In Caves With Update 1.4

Posted on September 21, 2012 by Seung Lee

Bats have always been known to be real pains in the neck when exploring through a cave (Pokémon fans can probably attest to this). However, the bats that’ll be in Minecraft‘s spooky 1.4 update for October won’t actually do anything to you (well, they might frighten you). They’re only going to be active during the night, and will escape if you disturb them. Don’t expect any amazing loot to drop if you slay a bat, either.
