Survive On An Alien Moon In XenoMiner

Posted on March 17, 2013 by Les Major

XenoMiner is a voxel based game similar to Minecraft that I’ve been playing recently. I figured I’d continue my voxel news from my last article on the VoxelFarm engine with this article about a game I’ve grown quite fond of.

Naturally it’s easy to get caught up in any voxel adventure. One creative idea leads to either collecting resources, or using an infinite resource mode to place blocks to make something. Unlike the usual biomes or areas you’re used to in voxel games, XenoMiner crashes you on an alien moon with no oxygen in the atmosphere.Read More

Darkain Arts Latest Animation On IndieGoGo

Posted on January 2, 2013 by Les Major

Some of you may know I also write for Darkain Arts Gamers, a proud supporter of news for Broken Joysticks. That same company is also my animation studio and the group behind a video game concept that didn’t quite take off. Now they’ve joined the crowd funding scene on indiegogo to get the time to release their latest animation, FantaSize 2. You can see more about it here including a trailer: http://www.indiegogo.com/fantasize2 or read more below.Read More

Alpha Colony Kickstarter Yields Surprise Twist Ending

Posted on December 3, 2012 by Broken Joysticks

For those that were fans of the mid-80’s perennial interstellar economical multiplayer game known to many as M.U.L.E., then recently there was some good news. The developers at DreamQuest Games who have worked on a number of titles including Nexuiz and Lego Universe, had spawned a brilliant idea to replicate the classic with modern elements taken from the current generation of turn-based strategy games.

The game itself would be named Alpha Colony, and would usher in a new audience to those who enjoyed such games like Settlers of Catan or Carcassonne, all the while providing a more colorful and family-friendly style on the PC, iOS and Android.  Taking inspiration from other independent developers looking to rally a fan base around a brand-new product with a lack of funding, DreamQuest looked to Kickstarter for some funding and support from the soon-to-be fans. The goal in question would be a meager $50,000 USD, over the course a single month. Starting November 2nd, it would be clear that they could make the Kickstarter goal and fulfill their promises.  Now the bad news.

Escape Goat makes a break for browsers, Steam Greenlight

Posted on August 31, 2012 by Jeff Wade

It might be a little early for starting the weekend, but MagicalTimeBean’s puzzle platformer Escape Goat is temporarily available to play in full on the game’s website.

Escape Goat started life as an Xbox Live Indie Game, before making it to the PC and included in June’s Indie Royale bundle. Now ported to HTML 5 and running in a browser, the charmingly retro game stars a goat imprissioned for witchcraft, and he’ll have to do plenty of double jumping and ramming to get through all of the dungeons puzzles. Read More

Resonance Review

Posted on July 26, 2012 by Seung Lee

Resonance

I’m indifferent, actually, towards point-and-click adventure games and visual novels. But, if it has a great story, likable characters, and lots of humor, I’ll at least try it. That being said, Resonance has to be one of the best point-and-click games I’ve ever played. It ranks up there with the Ace Attorney series (my favorite video game series), Monkey Island series, and Sam & Max series.

Resonance has you playing as four main characters: Tolstoy “Ed” Eddings, Anna Castellanos, Raymond Abbot, and Officer Winston Bennet. Ed is a mathematician who works for a physicist named Dr. Javier Morales. He struggles to make ends meet, and he seems to have the strength of an ant. Anna is a doctor and daughter of Morales, Ed’s boss. She has frequent dreams (more like nightmares) throughout the game where she’s a child running away from a monster. Raymond (Ray for short) is an established journalist who’s looking for a big scoop. Officer Bennet is a cop who’s not afraid to break some rules in order to find the truth.

DustForce Giveaway

Posted on May 16, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

I don’t know about you, but I tend to procrastinate a lot. For instance, I’ve just started my spring cleaning. It probably won’t be finished until September.

In honor of my cleaning efforts, we’re giving away copies of the indie game DustForce, where you play as a really acrobatic janitor. There are 50 perilous levels to clean up, so I guess this counts as a hardcore janitor simulator. You can find steam codes for the game in our articles, Steam group, Facebook, or Twitter.

Offspring Fling Released

Posted on May 14, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

I have long hoped that, by the time I successful reproduce, it would be socially acceptable to throw your children about like footballs. This would mostly be for serious reasons, like solving puzzles ( like the New York Times Crossword puzzle), but it would also be great fun for parent and child alike.

Alas, our social mores about offspring flinging are unlikely to change in such a short period of time. Until society advances to accommodate my wishes, Offspring Fling, an aptly titled indie game just released on Steam on Mother’s Day, will have to scratch that itch. You can read more about it and watch a trailer after the jump.
