Crossout demo’s Beta at Pax East + A Beta Code Giveaway!

Posted on April 23, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Our two winners were: OG Nico Givenchy
and
Roland Sajovoelgyi

Today at Pax East I had the chance to get a hands on play test of the newest vehicular combat game on the block Crossout, made by Gaijinn entertainment the company’s own Alexander Trifonov gave us an interview and walked us through the basics of the game and Rae got a chance to go hands on. The game is at its core a sort of loot based MMO with vehicles instead of bipedal characters.

The game play looks fantastic, its set in a post apocalyptic world where you spend your time crafting, looting, and driving around blowing things up. The game will be free to play and wont include any feature gating and  will feature some new and interesting mechanics. One of the main Mechanics of the game is building your car. You will start out with a small vehicle, and throughout the game be able get more weapons, and other pieces to add to your vehicle, and even build some new ones.

The whole community of the game will be able to build and share their cars and other types of vehicles with the rest of the game. This means that if you cant decide what you want to build you can just pull something down from the web, and as long as you have the parts you can build it. This aspect means that even the most uninventive person (like my self) will still be able to sport a cool mech like this one.

Is this a Vehicular combat game or METAL GEAR!

Since this is a loot based game your going to spend most of your Time in PvE which is what we got a demo of and what will be most of the games content. The main objective will be to go out blow up vehicles, and bring back their bits, to improve your vehicles.

Building, is only limited by what you can imagine, and the parts you have available. Each vehicle will have weight and an amount of available power, which you can use to fit things on to your to vehicle. Building will be regulated by a 100% controlled player controlled economy. Only players will be able to add or subtract from what is in the game economy. This idea is similar to EVE online where players take control of whats made via blueprints and and mining. For now mostly what we know is that there will drops of crates, which will contain the games items, and players will be able to loot these for later game supplies.

Perhaps most interesting of the features we got to see was how end game content is going to be handled. This is a loot based game, your car will be PvE fighting other cars to get loot drops. Alexander even described the game as being all about loot.  During our preview I was able to see that there are at least four rarities of loot to pick up. So lets say you are a top level player, and you have the very best PvE vehicle you can build. You can make that vehicle in to an PvE end game mob which a group of players can then take on.

If these players manage to defeat your boss mob, they will get some loot, but if your boss mob kills off all of the players, you will be rewarded with some of the players loot. This dynamic will all be tracked on the games leaderboards!

Accorind to what we were told, nothing in the will require money to unlock, all content will be avilable to all players either free or paid, and anyone who buys in with founder packs will retain their items after a final server wipe when the game gets ready for release around December of this year.

If you paint it red does it go faster?

The game is currently in Closed Beta, but we have keys! Make sure to comment on this post if you want get in, and we will do a drawing in a week, on April 30th.

The Division Xbox One Alpha Gameplay Footage Emerges – Violating NDA

Posted on December 20, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

The Division

The Division is only in Alpha testing but gameplay footage is already leaking out like a sieve. Head to this NeoGAF thread to find where you can watch the videos. They show off the game at a level not seen before–but note that the game remains in development. These videos are a violation of the NDA that we know these players had to sign, so dont expect these videos to last for long.

Its always interesting to watch a video of a game that you one know is not done, and two isisnt supposed to be for general consumption. The game is set for a March lanch and in the videos looks at least a little bit more complete than the last time we saw it. Having suffered a large number of delays and setbacks, its nice to see the game in this close to finished of a state. Its always tough to get a feel for a game from gameplay like this, I can tell they are trying to build a story and that there are guns, and gadgets, but the video gives me no real insight in to the game beyond here is 20 minutes of me running around.

the videos feature the player moving around the environment, utilizing the promised gadgets not much else. I was expecting a mission, some story? most of what i saw in the 20 minutes or so i watched was a player walking around in what appeared to be a desolate environment. We do at least get to seem some of the base building that the game seems to feature, as well as the home base missions that I assume are at the start of the game, where the player is tasked with some missions.

Beta Report: Paladins Champion of the Realm

Posted on December 11, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

Paladins Champion of the Realm, the newest game from Hi-Rez studios (creators of SMITE, and publisher of Tribes). The game features (so far) a cast of 9 characters who fight over a single point to capture. After capturing the point players must then escort a cannon to three “doors” which the cannon destroys advancing the game. Most games last about 10 minutes and feature fast paced action that’s pretty close to nonstop. The game currently features 9 Champions each of whom have 3 special abilities that are activated by a key press. In this way its very MOBA like, but the similarities end there.  Instead of towers, or turrets, the game has you capturing a point, for tickets. The more players on the point the more tickets you get. After 100 tickets, a “siege engine” spawns and you escort the engine to the enemies gate, where it fires at the gate and does damage. This all sounds pretty confusing but the game is honestly quite simple. Most of the game your directed directly to the objective that currently was needing to be achieved.

my favorite hero, the FOX

Paladins UI is very minimalist

The games major difference from other MOBAs comes in its card system. As you level up you are allowed to select a series of 5 cards which have unique effects on your three abilites. One might boost damage, one might boost duration, anotehr might cause a debuff on the enemy. This is how the game handles “builds” the cards are drawn at random from your stack as you level up, and you can earn more cards each time you level up, or you can purchase more cards  for in game currency or buy cards. Yes the game has microtransactions, its not yet clear how all of them will work, but it does seem clear that at least you can earn everythign thats currently in game just by playing. You would have to play a lot, but you could earn it all.

I found the game to be a lot of fun, I streamed it for two hours, you can watch the VOD here on my twitch channel, but watching 20 minutes of it should give you enough of an idea of what the game is about to decide if you like it or not. Most matches last less than 10 minutes.  Personally I love the games look, really reminded me of  Wild Star. Its very cartoony and bring, something that I honestly love. The style is often made fun of for being too childish, but for me dark games are just too much, I really prefer the pretty colors and particle effects. The Beta is very much a Beta, with new content being added very quickly. It also has its fare share of bugs, but there is a full forum for reporting bugs and I have no doubt that Hi Rez will work diligently to iron out the bugs, while adding as much content as they can.

Currently in semi-open beta you can sign up on the site or purchase access (buy in for 20$ here) on the Hi-Rez site. The game is I think its worth the the small buy in to get on the ground floor. The game is (At least according to wikipedia) planned for multi console release, so getting in early on PC should give players an edge. Judge for yourself by checking out the youtube and twitter content that Hi-Rez is putting out.
