Final Fantasy VII Remake Details Revealed in Famitsu

Posted on December 15, 2015 by Broken Joysticks

Final Fantasy VII remake

The new issue of Famitsu, the famous Japanese gaming magazine, has revealed new info about the Final Fantasy VII remake. Most notably, the game will have more focus on Biggs, Wedge, and Jesse, as well as a fully explorable Midgar.

Square has been slowly dripping out info regarding the remake of the classic game, and not all of it has been received positively. In recent gameplay footage, the new battle system was revealed which does away with much of the turn-based elements of the original game in favour of a system resembling that of the FF XIII series. There has of course also been the decision to split up the game into “episodes”, which will be sold separately. There has been no word on how many of these episodes there will be.

It’s hard not to be sceptical of the Final Fantasy VII remake considering what a terrible, terrible, terrible company Square Enix has become. Seemingly second only to Konami in how disconnected it is from the fanbase that still tries its best to support it. Having said that, I don’t think the decision to radically change some of the content from the original game is a bad one. If you want to justify selling this thing for more than 60 dollars, splitting it up into multiple parts, you better have some new content to justify it. Give me more of the city to explore, give me cyberpunk chocobo races, GIVE ME MORE DRESSES TO PUT CLOUD IN GODDAMMIT

*Coughs*

The point is, if Square Enix is going to get away with charging multiple times for a remake, it does need to add new content. Now of course, that is no guarantee that the new content will be good. This is modern Square Enix after all, but I really can’t fault them for trying to take the game in a new direction, especially since a port of the game has already been made available on the PS4 earlier this month for 15 bucks. It is already perfectly possible for folks to play the original game on modern consoles, so to justify the price tag, Square will have to do something radical. Let’s just hope that this new direction doesn’t turn out to be as bad as the previous six “new directions” Square Enix has tried over the past decade.

Final Fantasy XIV 2.4 “Dreams of Ice” Patch Released

Posted on November 4, 2014 by Rae Michelle Richards

Square Enix’s latest MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV received a major patch last week with the release of version 2.4 – “Dreams of ICE”. This latest patch brings with it a brand new dungeon called Snowcloak, a hard version of Sastasha and The Sunken Temple for high level characters, the final Coil of Bahamut and most importantly two new jobs – Rogue and Ninja!

We may be slightly past the initial rush of players trying to level their Rogues to 50 but you can find many Ninjas in training amongst the ranks of U’Dah, Gradania and other major player hubs. If you want a full breakdown of 2.4 you can head on over to Square’s site for the full patch notes.

We’ve included some major highlights from the patch and an 8 minute trailer after the jump.

Heavensward! FFXIV: A Realm Reborn teases its first expansion

Posted on October 21, 2014 by Chelsea Richards

Square Enix has had one busy weekend, with the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival giving us lots of big news, with regards to its MMO that successfully relaunched last August under the same name. The new expansion is set to take place in Ishgard, which current players may remember scraping the surface of in the Coerthas Central Highlands. Alongside the typical features of  an increased level cap, and spells to go along with said increased cap, players are also earning the ability for their Free Companies (guilds) to construct their own airships. Also included are both a new Dark Knight job, and a currently unannounced race.

While we haven’t heard anything at the Las Vegas show with regards to the plans for the Golden Saucer and its implementation of Chocobo Racing, we are told that more information is to come from the London show on October 25th, and the Tokyo show from December 20th. Heavensward: Final Fantasy XIV is expected to go live in Spring of 2015.

Before then, however, is the release of patch 2.4 “Dreams of Ice” featuring the new primal fight of Shiva, while introducing players to the new class of Rogue and its job-extension into Ninja. Familiar bosses Typhon and Ultros and a few new dungeons are also expected to make appearances when this patch goes live on October 28th.Read More

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call Impressions

Posted on September 9, 2014 by Jason Nason

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call takes all of the beloved music from the Final Fantasy games and mashes them with a rhythm game and the result is pretty great, and pretty tough. The demo has released last week and I downloaded it to give it a whirl. I’ve been a longtime fan of Final Fantasy and love the music. How could I go wrong here.

Playing the game is simple enough. As with similar music rhythm games, the goal is to follow a melody line and tap or swipe at the right times. This is easier said than done, at least in the harder difficulties. Circles and lines pass from the left to the right of the screen. When you are presented with a circle on the screen, you tap when it reaches a certain circle mark on the screen. If you time it right you will get points, if you miss it then you will lose HP in your life bar. Run out of HP and the level is over.

Final Fantasy 8’s Ending Is Generally Seen As This, Right?

Posted on May 12, 2014 by Les Major

Bare with me here since it’s been a lifetime since I played Final Fantasy 8 but a friend of mine got me reading into some theories about the games story and ending recently. My confusion comes from the fact that no one seems to usually talk about how I perceived the ending of the game. I think out of everything I’ve seen one YouTube video that actually dealt with my perception.
Spoilers are ahead of course! So join in and tell me what you think.Read More

Lightning Returns Demo Available today on Xbox 360 and PS3

Posted on January 21, 2014 by Jason Nason

Square Enix announced today that a playable demo for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is now available for download on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. As a special bonus, players who download the PlayStation Network demo will automatically receive the Utsusemi Garb DLC, which includes the Heavenly Fan weapon and the Kaminari (meaning “Lightning” in Japanese) shield item. The DLC pack will download with the demo and will be unlocked in the full retail game on February 11. The DLC pack will also be available to purchase for other customers later this year.

The demo puts players in control of Lightning as she traverses the chaos-infested Yusnaan palace of her old ally, Snow. Players will experience Lightning’s new customization options and master the game’s completely overhauled battle system. For those who activate the Outerworld services and submit their battle scores of the final fight against Zaltys, the ‘Siegfried’ outfit will be unlocked in the full retail game.

[youtube id=”OGv2CDo8qQo” width=”600″ height=”350″]
