Circle to release Kutar series for 3DS on Thursday

Posted on November 8, 2016 by Jason Nason

What is Kutar? Kutar is the character who has an incredible expressionless emotion that can’t be distinguished by laughing or crying. Kutar is not a dog, cat or bear. Kutar is always Kutar no matter where he is going or doing.

In all seriousness, Kutar is a series of microgames developed by Giga Rensya and being released by Circle Entertainment in North America on Thursday. The games, ten of them in all, each retail for $0.99 USD. It’s not clear if they will be sold as a bundle at this point.

They look pretty crazy, but for such a small price they could be interesting. Kutar definitely looks reminiscent of the Wario Ware series.

Fairune 2 | REVIEW

Posted on November 6, 2016 by Jason Nason

When I played Fairune just under two years ago I fell in love with the simple adventure RPG. Looking and feeling somewhat reminiscent of the early The Legend of Zelda games, the game was wide open and fun to play. Circle and developer Skipmore have followed up the game with the sequel Fairune 2 and have built a game that stays true to the success of the first one while also expanding into a much bigger game.

Fairune 2 is a game that is built on exploration. You’ll need to not only explore the various maps in the game, but also pay close attention to the surroundings. There will be many times in the game when you’ll suddenly find yourself lost without a clue what to do next. Where do you go? The game is built with such subtlety that if you’re just rushing through the game you can very easily overlook something pivotal to progressing in the game.

Ninja Usagimaru – The Mysterious Karakuri Castle | REVIEW

Posted on October 12, 2016 by Jason Nason

I like puzzle games, and there is something inherently satisfying when a puzzle game is also an action-platformer. Playing through many of the 3D Zelda games is a testament to just how popular this type of puzzle game can be. Ninja Usagimaru – The Mysterious Karakuri Castle is a side-scrolling puzzle platformer which combines the need to solve a physical puzzle in the level with also reaching the goal. While the game has all the markings of a fun game, the controls and responsiveness of the game are a little but clunky and it makes the experience of playing as a ninja a little bit unsatisfying.

At this point of all of my reviews I always point out that the negative things I pointed out in the opening paragraph aren’t enough of a damper to kill the entire game for me and this is again the case. While the controls can be a bit of a pain, and at times not very intuitive, the game still has some solid challenge. Once you can master the controls, and breathe when your character walks off a ledge instead of jumping, there is fun to be had.

Splat the Difference | REVIEW

Posted on October 6, 2016 by Jason Nason

There are a lot of find the difference games out there, with tons of them for free games in the app stores. To be honest I haven’t played too many of them as they aren’t really my cup of tea. Sure they’re simple in practice, but I’ve often looked at a title shot and moved on. Heck, there are times when a game title and visuals looked rather interesting and it was the revelation that the whole game was spot the difference and I was too annoyed to even look any further.

It’s refreshing that not only does Lightwood Games embrace the genre but also takes a cute little play on the whole genre in their title. And with the recent success of Nintendo’s Splatoon series, calling the game Splat the Difference makes one really connect the game to Nintendo.

Polara | REVIEW

Posted on September 24, 2016 by Jason Nason

I’ve played my share of runners with most of them being the endless variety. You run and run, avoiding enemies or other obstacles until you eventually fall. You try to beat out your top score or the scores others on a high score chart. But while Polara is a runner it’s not in the endless variety, which gives this game much more lasting power and makes it more satisfying to play.

The year is 2140 and a civil war rages between the upper and lower classes, resulting in a militant defense initiative nation wide by the governing bodies. In an undisclosed laboratory deep within the urban capital, Lara, and agent ascending the ranks within the Bertram Defense Institute, has been chosen to test a prototype bio-defense suit that protects the subject from the automated defense grid now monitoring and “cleansing” the continent of lower class insurgents.
