GRIM.EXE Infects Epic Games’ Paragon

Posted on May 5, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

The latest hero to enter the combat arena in Paragon is GRIM.EXE a fully functional battle robot that comes with his own infomercial. Using an unlimited energy source that powers a large pulse canon GRIM.EXE is able to unleash devastating blasts at medium range, shield himself using another one of his abilities and knockback opponents with another.  His ultimate – a “Gyro Targeted Force Orb” – can pass through solid objects and home in on a single target, dealing them their final blow.

GRIM.EXE (and the little imp who issues him commands) will be coming for free to the PlayStation 4 and PC versions of Paragon on May 10th. Check out the chuckle worthy faux infomercial in the embedded player below. If you’ve never played Paragon before make sure to read our in-depth impressions before jumping in, Paragon is currently available as part of a $20 buy-in for access to the “pre-alpha” season.

The Mean Greens – Why You Should Enlist In This Early Access Shooter

Posted on May 1, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Developers Virtual Basement bring the childhood pastime of backyard warfare with plastic army men into the modern era with their Unreal 4 engine powered team death match shooter The Mean Greens.  This is certainly territory that has been covered by 3DO’s now defunct Army Men franchise on previous generation consoles, but no other title has made watching your plastic figure melting into a pile of goo like The Mean Greens has achieved.Read More

Paragon’s Newest Hero Is Quite The Pair – Introducing Iggy & Scorch

Posted on April 15, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Epic Games have revealed the latest hero for their early access 3D MOBA, Paragon, and this new playable character is a bit of a hot take, if you don’t mind the pun. Iggy & Scorch might sound like two characters but as their reveal trailer shows – it doesn’t look like the pair can be separated, with the reptilian Iggy always attached to the fire breathing Scorch whenever possible! This pair have the ability to launch missiles, Scorch is able to roast foes with fire breath and their ultimate move calls down hell-fire from the skies!

Paragon

The pair will be available in just one week, April 21st, for all players who have access to the game. Currently Paragon is in a buy-in alpha state with the lowest tier costing $20 USD – an open beta and eventual free to play full release will follow later this year on Windows PC and PlayStation 4. If you want to check out our impressions of the current version of the game they are available here.

The Culling is out today to early access ahead of schedule

Posted on March 5, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Xaviant Games announces that The Culling has been released ahead of time. SUPRISE!  if you haven’t been under a rock for the last two weeks, you will have seen at least one video or stream someone playing this game. Its a survival game with similar mechanics to several other games where you are dropped in to a small area with nothing and then forced to craft things and kill people.

Evidently the closed Alpha and its media blitz were a sucess. The developers seem to have had a fire lit under them by the positive media coverage.  So it seems they worked worked a bit of overtime to get the product as close to finished as possible. As a result The Culling is available right now on Steam’s early access platform.

Xaviant Games CEO Michael McMain said in an email:

After we took the Alpha test offline, we decided to do something a little crazy. Based on watching you play and hearing your feedback, we knew there was a lot of work to be done. We decided that if there was a way to get that work done faster, we would make it happen. So the team buckled down even tighter and put in five very late nights. The result is a game that’s seen over fifty significant changes. We’ve fixed bugs, rebalanced systems, refined art, and generally made the island a nicer place to die.

So now the general public will get a chance to play this great game. Personally I was recently absorbed by a similar survival game H1Z1 King of the Kill. Though the two games are similar this one contains much more crafting and only a few firearms. With such a tiny price tag of $12.99, it should be quite easy for many gamers to pick this game up and give it a try. Personally I will be picking the game up and look forward to reviewing it here!

What do you think of the developers decision to move up the early access release game? Tell us on Twitter or facebook!

Paragon Early Access Founders Pass & Beta Weekends Detailed

Posted on March 3, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Epic Games sent out an email blast to everyone who has signed up for the Paragon open beta this afternoon informing them that an early access Founders Pack is now available. If you don’t want to put down the $19.99 USD for the early access pass Epic will also be holding free beta weekends before the open beta’s launch.

In part here is what the email read:

As someone who has signed up for the beta, even if you don’t want to buy a Founder’s Pack, you will be invited to free Beta Weekends during the Early Access Season.

You can also choose to buy a Founder’s Pack starting on March 14, and begin playing March 18. We’ll have more details on Founder’s Packs and Beta Weekends soon. If you’d rather wait, the game will be in free Open Beta in the summer of 2016.

Steve Superville from Epic Games also took to Reddit this morning to further explain the announcement. All heroes and cards in the game can be earned for free only by playing the game and Epic will monetize the game by selling skins, emotes and other non-gameplay changing add-ons in addition to providing paid early access.

There are two other packs available if you want to put down a little bit more cash – the Challenger Pack and Master Pack which Steve described like this:

Founder’s Packs will cost $19.99, and include access to the game, skins, boosts, and other cosmetic items you can unlock by playing. Challenger Packs ($59.99) and Master Packs ($99.99) will include a huge number of skins, unlockable items, boosts, a unique skin, and a Founder’s Pack to give to a friend. We’ll be sharing complete details soon.

What do you think about the monetization and paid founder’s access to Paragon? The open beta will begin sometime later this summer and the founder’s pack will be available on March 14th. We’ll bring you our hands-on impressions once we get access to the game.

The H1Z1 Split Is Official, H1Z1: King of the Hill & H1Z1: Just Survive Now Available On Steam

Posted on February 18, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Daybreak Games has officially announced that the split of successful zombie survival game H1Z1 has been implemented on Steam. There are now two games in the store if you search H1Z1 – “ H1Z1 Just Survive” is the game’s popular sandbox survival mode as a stand-alone product. “King of the Hill” is a competitive focused multiplayer online shooter that is much more fast paced than the survival mode.

Both games will continue to receive free content updates and balance patches as their development progresses. H1Z1: King of the Hill is expected to exit early access sometime this summer with versions for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One arriving around the same time.

Both games are priced at $19.99 USD individually and owners of the previously combined H1Z1 should find the two new titles in their Steam Libraries.

Tomorrow marks the launch of the highly anticipated Final Fantasy XIV: Heavansward for Windows PC, PlayStation 4 and PS3. Players who pre-ordered the expansion have been able to set foot in the lands of Ishgard for the past three days during Heavensward’s early access period and I was fortunate enough to be granted passage through the borders of the long closed land. Here are my initial impressions of Heavensward after playing about the first ten hours.Read More
