Star Wars Episode 1: Racer Is Back, In GOG Form

Posted on May 1, 2018 by Rae Michelle Richards

Almost 20 years after its release, Star Wars Episode 1: Racer is back in the news thanks to a collaboration between Lucasfilm, Disney and GOG.com.

GOG brought the 1999 original game into the shop and fine tuned a few things to make sure that it plays nice on more modern operating systems and chipsets.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the features of Episode 1: Racer provdied by GOG’s game page:

  • Hang on tight – with afterburners on, Podracers max out at a simulated 600 mph!
  • Relive all the thrill and excitement of the Podracer sequence from STAR WARS™: Episode I.
  • Race in furious competition against 21+ opponents.
  • Take on over 21 tracks on 8 unique worlds!
  • Avoid hazards such as methane lakes, meteor showers and Tusken Raiders.
  • Spectacular 3D environments.
  • Vehicle sound effects and epic soundtrack taken directly from Episode I.

Originally released in April 1999, Star Wars Episode 1: Racer was released on the Nintendo 64, SEGA Dreamcast and Windows PC. The original PC Port had LAN multiplayer support but this no longer works due to the depreciation of the IPX protocol across multiple Windows releases since 99. On Nintendo 64 Episode 1 Racer lacked a number of pre-rendered cutscenes seen in the other two releases but did make us of the N64 Expansion pass for higher resolution output and textures.

Disney Infinity Cancellation Is Disappointing News

Posted on May 11, 2016 by Les Major

It’s terrible for us to be reporting the news that Disney Infinity has been officially cancelled. The worst part of the story of course is the closure of Avalanche Software and the dedicated folks there losing their jobs. After the upcoming Alice Through The Looking Glass and Finding Dory releases, there will be no more Disney Infinity. The further disheartening news is that Disney is ceasing ALL game development. While it’s great that we may see some new content from studios we know and love, it means they’ll be working on something else besides the sequels we want or new IP’s.

In general, the NFC figure craze has been a difficult one for the industry to focus. LEGO has created a smash hit with Dimensions, and hopefully will continue to produce more products for it now that we’re closing in on the end of their last wave. Nintendo has been successful with amiibo but has struggled to find a way to promote the toys outside of eager Smash Bros collectors. Finally Skylanders has unfortunately floundered this year and needs a successful return and revitalization for this years upcoming release which is still to be announced.

Disney Infinity had it’s problems, but somehow the two Star Wars expansion sets worked.

PewDiePie Launches New Network ‘Revelmode’

Posted on January 14, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Pewds is at it again, this time conquering the world of business and multichannel networks. Backed by the Disney Maker studio MCN Felix ‘PewDiePie’ Kjellberg’s new network Revelmode will launch later on this year.

[youtube id=XpOSIjd433Q]

In a detailed interview with Variety (remember them they do entertainment news) he said that the network will focus on nurturing talent on “across YouTube, Facebook, and “other platforms.””

“I started as a gaming and digital-content fan long before making this a profession,” he said said in a statement. “The idea of Revelmode was built from my own experiences and will aim to bring together an Avengers-like talent squad to work and grow a business together. [Revelmode will create] one-off videos to original series to gamey games to animations, music, clothes, charity drives, and more–really anything that’s awesome in the eyes of the fans,” he explained.

Evidently the talent will be determined by pewdiepie himself and approved by the folks at Maker (a Disney subsidiary) At launch, the network includes CutiePieMarzia,CinnamonToastKen, EmmaBlackeryJackSepticEye,Kwebbelkop, Markiplier, Dodger, and Jelly. Thats quite the all star line up, but its not pointed out in the video or the article that most of those creators were already with disney owned Maker MCN. Late in 2015 rumor circulated that PewDiePie was not happy with Maker and intended to go off and establish his own Network powered by his over 40 million subscribers. In terms of dollars that number represents just about $4 million dollars a year, more than enough to establish a legitimate MCN anywhere in the world.

“We’re thrilled to be doubling down with Felix,” said Courtney Holt, executive VP and head of Maker Studios. “He is an amazing talent, a great partner and the pulse of millennial pop culture. We firmly believe in his vision for Revelmode and his chosen creators–we can’t wait to see the possibilities ahead.” It certinly will be an intresting year for the 23 year old media mogul.

TRON Run/r is now available in early access!

Posted on December 4, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

The neon highlighted world of Tron is coming back to your computer. During last nights game awards there was a commercial featuring a bunch of awesome looking Tron Run/r game play. We dont know much about the “action arcade” title so far, but its TRON people! Neon! Shiny! Light Cycles! Flynn! In case you cant tell I absolutely love the Tron its neon accented world, the idea of it being in the silicone of computer chips, i find it all fascinating. So when ever Disney (current IP holder) shouts TRON, I tend to shout SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY.

The game is in early access right now, and although the trailer didnt show much still images show a flying man (remember those flying suits from TRON: Legacy?) Light cycles, and a Neon accent feast for the eyes. So im in! So far the games page just says “Kevin Flynn…he is a legend. Space Paranoids, TRON the whole deal. The man came up with so many ideas. The world needs to see them. See what they tried to hide. So much unseen for so long. Here it is. The truth. RUN PROGRAM! More to come.”

Feast your eyes on a couple of stills below to get the general idea, I see a multiplier, and a score, so im thinking calssic arcade style racing game with different vehicles. What ever they do it better have Disks of TRON in it!

Disney and EA Announce Multi-Year Star Wars Games Partnership

Posted on May 6, 2013 by Joshua Rust

The House Of Mouse and publishing giant Electronic Arts have agreed to multi-game and multiyear agreement that will put the Star Wars brand in the hands of studios like Visceral, DICE, & Bioware. Of course Bioware is no stranger as they have put out one of the best Star Wars games ever created, in my opinion, Star Wars: The Knights Of The Old Republic. No, I’m not talking about that MMO one either. Unfortunately, I don’t think this means that the impressive and promising Star Wars 1313 game will be resurrected – but one can hope.

Electronic Arts will be handling the ‘core’ Star Wars games, while Disney will focus on the casual games – ranging from phones, tablets, consoles, & PC. Here’s hoping that we will get some quality titles out of this deal. For the official press release, keep reading after the jump.Read More

SEGA Reveals Disney’s Castle of Illusion

Posted on April 15, 2013 by Jason Nason

SEGA revealed a new teaser trailer for Disney’s Castle of Illusion, starring Mickey Mouse, today. The teaser is an expanded look at an uber teaser they released last week. And while the game looks like it could be something to see, the most notable thing that I can see is the omission of Nintendo platforms for the game’s release.

The original Castle of Illusion was a a platformer game developed by Sega and released for the Sega Genesis and Sega Master System way back in 1990. That was followed up with a release on Sega’s portable Game Gear system in 1991. It is the first game in Sega’s Illusion series of video games starring Mickey Mouse. It was amongst the second wave of games initially released for the platform which helped seal the console’s reputation within the period until the release of Sonic the Hedgehog.Read More

Disney Infinity’s Official Announcement Trailer

Posted on January 15, 2013 by Joshua Rust

The thing about pie is when someone has a whole one…everyone else want’s a piece of that pie. Disney is no exception as they have now officially confirmed the rumors that we reported last year that they were readying a “Skylanders Slayer” -Disney Infinityis official and it’s coming this June 2013!  Without further ado, here is the official trailer:

[youtube id=”96U2gkgK0o4″ width=”600″ height=”350″]

Disney states that there will be two player split-screen multiplayer for Disney Infinity as well as four-player drop-in drop-out online play. All of Disney’s characters will come together inside the game in an area called the ‘Toy Box’. Within the Toy Box players will be able to complete pre-existing quests and you will even be able to create your own (though to what extent is not known yet). Furthermore, everything inside the Toy Box is editable as well – from the buildings to toys.

The Incredibles Playset boasts an open-world where you will be able to fight enemies seen from the movie and be able to create custom buildings. While the Monsters University Playset pits players against a rival school with the ultimate goal of scaring children from the rival school. The Pirates of the Caribbean Playset will let players have battles with other pirate ships and explore uncharted lands by traveling from island to island via your pirate ship.

Disney Infinitywill be available for Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Wii, WiiU, 3DS PC, and mobile platforms. It will launch with Monsters University, The Incredibles and Pirates of the Caribbean Adventures Sets and around 20 toy figurines. Additional Adventure Sets are expected to arrive sometime later in 2013.

It looks like Skylanders has some competition and who knows…maybe they will push each other into making better games so that everyone wins. Question is, can you afford both Skylanders and Disney Infinity?

Disney Readying a “Skylanders-Slayer” For Next Year

Posted on November 17, 2012 by Joshua Rust

Disney Interactive looks to cash in on the “gotta collect ’em all” success that Activision is having with their Skylanders franchise. According to Stitch Kingdom, this new game that will tentatively be hitting Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, Wii U, & 3DS is cleverly titled: Disney Infinity. Yep…very clever indeed.

Stitch Kingdom states they have seen “a video produced for retailers which will be used to educate them on the product as well as familiarize them with the content.”Disney Infinitywill use plastic character tokens (sound familiar?) that will interact with a “flat device that connects via USB for console and infrared for handhelds.”

The starter pack will included iconic characters such as Monster Incs’ Sully, Jack Sparrow from Pirates, and Mr. Incredible from…well The Incredibles. Other characters that are rumored for a later release include:  Mike Wazowski, Randall, Hector Barbossa, Davy Jones, Mrs. Incredible, Syndrome, Dash, Violet, Woody, Jack Skellington, Agent P, Rapunzel, Anna, Ice Queen, Sorcerer Mickey, Tow Mater and Francesco Bernoulli.

Additional expansion packs (Adventure Packs…) will be available at launch as well. Such as Radiator Springs with Lightning McQueen & Holly Shiftwell. Toy Story In Space with Jesse & Buzz Lightyear. The Lone Ranger packed with The Lone Ranger & Tonto. As well as Phineas & Ferb packed with…you guessed it! Phineas & Ferb.

But those are only the “first expansion” packs expected as Disney looks to take a bite out of the Skylanders market. To me, this has its pros and cons. It’s good for the kids first and foremost. More parents can spend time with their kids enjoying these family style games. As I have with my daughter on Skylanders. The cons would have to be with two different series out there, money is going to go fast. Also I think it may hurt Skylanders in return, but then again it may push the developers to compete with each other and produce an even better product.

Maybe Disney will incorporate Marvel characters and Star Wars characters too… Look for more details on Disney Infinity here as the become available.

Disney Buys Lucas Film, Promises Star Wars VII

Posted on October 30, 2012 by Les Major

In news that will no doubt flow over into video games, and makes one wonder what in the world future Kingdom Hearts games will include now that Disney has both Marvel titles and Lucas Arts titles, Disney has purchased Lucas Film. News has it to the tune of $4.05 Billion.

This is very surprising news including that Disney plans to release Star Wars episode VII by 2015. I’m actually skeptical about all of this still since it seems very surreal.

News media is quoting George Lucas as saying, “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers.”

What do you think?

Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD ReMIX Is Now A Thing

Posted on September 19, 2012 by Seung Lee

That’s right, the popular RPG franchise that involves both Disney and Final Fantasy characters, Kingdom Hearts, is receiving a new game. If you were expecting Kingdom Hearts III, though, you’ll be sorely disappointed. Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD ReMIX was announced today at TGS, and it’ll be exclusive to the PlayStation 3.

Included in the game will be: Kingdom Hearts: Final Mix, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, and Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories. 358/2 Days was exclusive on the Nintendo DS, so those of you without DSes or 3DSes are in luck. The Final Mix version of Kingdom Hearts was also never released outside of Japan. It includes a few extra cutscenes, weapons, and bosses.
