Destiny: Rise Of Iron | REVIEW

Posted on September 29, 2016 by Les Major

New Fallen Splicers

Considering it sounds like Bungie was hoping to have Destiny 2 out by now and Rise of Iron wasn’t originally in the cards, you’d be hard pressed to know it. In this expansion you venture into the plaguelands, a patrol area that overlaps some of the sections of classic Earth patrol with a new snowy theme. Along with the change in the weather comes signs of a vicious battle as well as strands of red vines called Siva, a nanite weapon that is growing out of control.

By this point with Rise of Iron being the fourth Destiny expansion, you pretty much know what you’re in for, but for gamers who haven’t taken the plunge there is quite a bit of content now. The first two expansions gave players quite a bit of running around to do through shorter stories in previous areas. Meanwhile The Taken King was quite a massive third expansion which added a large new play area, an alien ship to explore over Saturn.

Many of these expansions, including Rise of Iron, included strikes and raids. Strikes are missions you complete with a team of three which leads up to a boss battle and tends to have good rewards. Raids can include up to six players and include both puzzles and battles to keep everyone busy. So what really keeps people playing Destiny? We’ve all heard the complaints that it’s a grind and not much content is really added story wise in each expansion.

The snowy intro mission

The experience itself is great! My friend and I finally buckled down and accepted that we’d have to place an awkward personal ad of sorts to find ourselves a group to play with. The raids don’t matchmake for you, nor does some other in game content. So we went online and begged random strangers to come to our rescue so we could run some of the earlier raids we’d missed. In less than twenty four hours we had a group.

It’s really spending time with these guys and running content to get new gear that keeps us playing. We socialize, have a good time, and enjoy the solid gameplay. It’s not exactly the same but in a way Destiny even brings back memories of StarSiege Tribes. You have these amazing double jumps instead of a jetpack and lots of great fire fights. The whole experience is fun and that’s what keeps us coming back and trying to get new gear and goodies to drop from replaying raids or other multiplayer sections.

Really I’m hoping the sequel will grab the MMO style of Destiny and expand it deeply. What I’d really like to see is constant character improvement. Typically when you go back into older areas in Destiny, your character gets scaled down a bit. You’ll still be a beast, but you can’t expect to one shot any old foes. If Borderlands and Destiny had a baby that kept the rewards and leveling coming, it would be a completely addictive experience. More so than what Destiny already is.

Giants Husk shipyard area in the plaguelands

All that aside, the fact remains that what we do have is fun. If you’ve enjoyed Destiny in the past and have people to play with, you’re going to enjoy going through this latest batch of content. Story content does need to be detailed out more and I still dislike that collecting gear unlocks cards to read online. I want everything in my game itself. Give me a reason to visit the Speaker, the leader of the Guardians you play as. Let me filter through a list of his unlocked knowledge and read the text of those cards in game. Or better yet, when the card is about an exotic weapon, let me use my Ghost robot friend to scan the weapon and learn that data from them in my own inventory.

So what do you get in this pack? As mentioned above the plaguelands are an overlapping section outside the wall of the Cosmodrome on Earth. You can wander back into familiar areas and see what they’re like all battle scarred and Siva covered, but the new content holds up as well. From a destroyed shipyard with a massive tanker that seems split in two like the wall of a collapsed apartment building baring it’s rooms to the outside world, to more factory like complexes to wander through while having fire fights with upgraded Fallen warriors. The new enemy type are called Splicers which are basically cybernetically enhanced Fallen. They come with a new Shank as well, a flying robot enemy, which is electrically charged to explode when it gets too close. This comes as a disadvantage to them however since they can be destroyed to take out nearby regular Shanks as well.

More Splicer action

The main story mission is fun as well, even though it’s sadly only two hours long. There is still more content on top of that though. Like quests to find new guns which do include spoken dialogue and story bits along the way, so saying the story really ends after two hours isn’t entirely true. Plus there is the strike, the new raid, and patrolling that new plagueland area. There’s also a new social area in the cold mountains where you’ll find the temple of the Iron Lords.

In short, it’s more Destiny. Somehow Rise of Iron jumps that hurdle of feeling like the same old thing and creates a familiar nostalgia that becomes an enjoyable experience. Fighting familiar enemies isn’t a rehash anymore, it’s your part of the war against the darkness. Exploring old content with new visuals isn’t a slog through reused assets, it’s a fun experience with new collectibles to find. If you’re still playing Destiny, you’re getting more of what you enjoy already. You’ve got your friends online to enjoy it with, and you want to take an evening off and go find more gear with those people.

The new social area

Plus who knows what new events will be waiting for us! Will Sparrow League Racing make a return? What will the new Iron Banner be like when that relaunches? So is Rise of Iron worth the admission price? Well I’ve already spent more time on it than I probably should have, so I think that speaks to it’s value right there. It’s more of what you enjoy with new stuff to discover.

Players of Rise of Iron on PlayStation 4 will get exclusive access to a multiplayer map called Icarus and an exclusive quest called “Show of Strength” according to the PlayStation Blog. Here is how they described the 6 Vs 6 Map:

“This Golden Age solar farm on Mercury has remained untouched by the Vex for reasons unknown. The Vanguard has denied petitions from various weapon foundries to research it until the Warlock orders have finished their surveys first. An exemption has been granted to Lord Shaxx and his Crucible: the Guardians are free to utilize Icarus as a live-fire training zone.”

Here is the official PS4 pack-shot courtesy of Activision:

Destiny: The Collection will carry a recommended MSRP of $59.99 USD. What do you think of this new collection aimed at players who might not have picked up Destiny? Let us know in the comments section!

Bungie bounty is back tonight only in Sparrow racing

Posted on December 23, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

Destiny’s “Bungie Bounty” event, during which you can earn special prizes by beating the developer at its own game, returns tonight, December 22. Starting at 4 PM PST / 7 PM EST, Bungie developers will hop into Sparrow Racing League matches on Xbox One–beat them and you’ll get a special emblem.

“If you can match against us, you’ll be racing against some of the very same developers who created the Sparrow Racing League,” Bungie said in an announcement. “This is your chance to beat us at our own game. If you can place in the top three, we’ll deliver [the emblem above] to your Postmaster. Every race has a trophy.”

The event runs for a period of two hours, ending at 6 PM PST / 9 PM EST. Be on the lookout for Bungie community managers “DeeJ” and “Cozmo” on Xbox Live, as you’ll need to match up with them for a shot to win. However, it may not be them actually behind the controller.

Sparrow Racing League Goes Live Today In Destiny: The Taken King

Posted on December 7, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Starting today guardians who visit the universe of Bungie’s Destiny can participate in a six-person death race on a brand new Sparrow. The next major patch – which goes live today – Destiny 2.1 – will add two new NPCs to the tower. By speaking to Tess Everis Guardians will have the option to purchase new in-game emotes, similar to the one’s that were made available during the Halloween event. By speaking to the second NPC, Amanda Holliday, players will be able to earn their Sparrow Racing League License and complete bounty for new gear.

The Sparrow Racing League will go live on all platforms starting today and will run until December 29th. Fans got their first chance to check out this brand new, time limited mode, at the PlayStation Experience this past weekend in San Francisco.

According to Bungie here’s everything you do when speaking to Amanda Holliday:

  • Obtain your SRL Licence Quest and SRL Bounties
  • Earn a new Sparrow as part of the SRL Quest
  • Upgrade your reputation by completing SRL Bounties
  • Each Race is a chance to earn SRL gear and Shaders
  • The higher your reputation, the better the post-game drops
  • Helmets and Class Items can drop with up to 320 Light
  • Helmets and Class Items with Light can be used for Infusion
  • All other SRL gear has no Light, but features racing perks

Here’s everything Tess has to offer:

  • New emotes to celebrate the thrill of speed and competition
  • ToolKits that include stylish (but equally fast) Sparrows
  • ToolKits that include Horns to let you signal your approach
  • A new Record Book to provide more challenge and reward

It’s important to note that a copy of The Taken King is required to participate in The Sparrow League.

The Next Destiny Expansion Is ‘The Taken King’

Posted on June 9, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Destiny players looking for details on the next downloadable expansion for Bungie’s latest shooter don’t have to wait any longer as the marketing materials for this Fall’s The Taken King have leaked. I am fully expecting this new expansion to be demoed on stage at Sony’s press conference next week at E3.

According to Kotaku The Taken King will be priced at $40 and will include new sub-classes for each of the existing three classes, a brand new raid pitting parties of guardians against a new foe called Oryx, new PVP arenas, new story missions and a brand new public event.

A previous Destiny roadmap that leaked in January outlined The Taken King (previously known under the codename ‘Comet’) as including 12 story missions, 1 raid, 3 strikes and a new “base level” of 30.

It is unknown if any of the planned content from the Comet leak have been tweaked in the past six months. Hopefully we will all get our first look at The Taken King in just a few short days.

Major Changes Coming To Destiny’s PVP Loot System

Posted on April 29, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Bungie will be making some substantial changes in how loot drops work for crucible players with the release of House of Wolves this May.

As reported by IGN today:

  • Completed matches in crucible will now be worth 6 marks instead of the current 3, allowing players to earn mid-tier gear a lot faster.
  • Bungie will also be increasing the number of rare drops available to Crucible players – we should be seeing a lot more blue and even some purple drops from PVP!
  • Players will receive one etheric light (used to upgrade exotics) after hitting levels 3 or 5 in the Iron Banner Challenge.
  • Xur the notorious vender who appears during the weekend will no longer be used to upgrade exotic gear. Instead all upgrades will be handled via etheric light drops.
  • Players who place first in PVP matches will be more likely to receive decent drops.

The source article also has some pretty cool quotes from members of the development team as well!

Ranging between Earth’s Cosmodrome and The Hellmouth pit on the Moon, Destiny gamers can now purchase Bungie’s first expansion. Don’t be fooled into thinking there’s just a new raid here. Be sure to stop by the Tower after picking up the The Dark Below expansion and talk to newcomer Eris. She’ll have some bounties for you that will unlock new missions.

If you’ve played Destiny on Earth or the Moon recently, you’ve seen increased activity from The Hive foes. This DLC continues that storyline leading into the darkness deep within the moon where the latest raid takes place. What else is in store and what other goodies do you get? Destiny | Review

Posted on November 5, 2014 by Rae Michelle Richards

Version Tested: PlayStation 3

Destiny quickly become one of the most pre-ordered titles in recent memory and of course it was backed by one of the largest marketing campaigns we’ve seen in a while for a videogame. Needless to say expectations for Bungie’s first post-Halo release reached into the stratosphere and after playing Destiny for quite some time I’m ready to render my verdict. Should you forge ahead into the stars and join the ranks of the Guardians or pass at being an interstellar savior?Read More

Become a Legend With The Destiny Launch Trailer

Posted on September 9, 2014 by Rae Michelle Richards

Bungie’s latest title – the  MMO/FPS hybrid Destiny – is now available through both physical and digital retailers. To celebrate Activision released a live action trailer. This live action trailer was directed by Josepth Kosinki whom is probably most well known for helming TRON: legacy. He’s coupled his live action trailer with some Led Zepplin , which if you ask me is a pretty awesome choice.

Activision is trumpeting Destiny as “the most pre-ordered new video game IP” and according to them over 4 million people participated in the in the game’s beta this past July. Players take on the role of a Guardian on the last city on Earth. Adventures aren’t just limited to this planet of ours – the interactive world promises to span the stars with missions located on Mars!

Check out the live action trailer in the player below. Activision has provided Broken Joysticks with a PS3 copy of Destiny and we will be posting our full review in the coming weeks.

Bungie Showcases First Gameplay For Destiny

Posted on June 11, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

At Sony’s E3 press conference last night former Halo developers, Bungie, took the stage to show off their latest title, the persistent online world of Destiny. They also released a brief three minute trailer this morning, if you’d like a condensed look at how the game will run on the PlayStation 4.  Bungie’s E3 demonstration is great, though, featuring over ten minutes of never before seen gameplay. There’s lots of large flashy guns, sci-fi enemies oh and our first look at how instances (called ‘Public Events’) will work in Destiny.

The world of Destiny takes you hundreds of years into the future, after an apocalyptic event, a period of development of great technological advancement, three of mankind’s colonies have collapsed.  Within the walls of the last human city an alien being, known as The Traveler, bestows upon you a great power.

We’ve included both the brief trailer and the full demonstration from Sony’s press conference after the jump. Destiny  has no solid release date outside of a ‘2014’ window, as presented at Sony’s event last night.

Bungie Set To Reveal Project Destiny At GDC?

Posted on January 16, 2013 by Joshua Rust

With the 2013 Game Developers Conference (GDC) right around the corner, it seems that Bungie may finally be ready to reveal project “Destiny” to some capacity. Hosting their own presentation dubbed “Brave New World”, Bungie writer/design director Joe Staten and art director Christopher Barrett will finally offer “a glimpse of the brave new world that has been built”.

While some concept art was leaked a while back, not much is known about Destiny. We all have been eager to see what Bungie has been up to since wrapping up with the Halo franchise. Well, we are just a few months away to see what Bungie has been up to.

The GDC schedule details an overview of what the Brave New World presentation will contain:

“Two decades of success in the gaming industry is no small feat, but after ten years of Halo, Bungie found themselves faced with a tremendous challenge: to build a whole new world, filled with even more amazing mysteries, places, creatures, and opportunities for player investment.”

“For the first time ever, Bungie creative directors will discuss their world building techniques, from concept to production. Attendees will walk away with key insights into Bungie’s battle-tested design process. They’ll get a glimpse of the brave new world that has been built, a place where the next ten years of great Bungie adventures will unfold.”

So  yeah, it’s an understatement when I say that we are excited to see what Bungie has been up to. There’s no doubt that Destiny has the potential to be the next Halo franchise. Question is, is Destiny multiplatform, Microsoft exclusive, or a disappointing announcement of a browser based game….

Well, for their sake it better not be the latter…
