Atlus Announces Persona 5

Posted on November 24, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

Atlus has released a very cryptic trailer for the newest entry in their Shin Megami Tensei franchise, the highly anticipated Persona 5. A very brief trailer was posted online today, which reveals little about the title. In the less than minute long trailer we see five chairs fade into existence against a red backdrop. The only readable text (for those not fluent in Japanese) teases us about being slaves and craving emancipation – honestly we are just as confused you are at this point.

Persona 5 is currently in development and is scheduled to release sometime in 2014 for the PlayStation 3 in Japan with no solid details for a western release. Those of you hoping for a next-generation Persona are out luck for the time being, but this move shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.  The last main game in the series, Persona 4, was released on the PlayStation 2 in 2008 – two years after the release of the PS3! It was also ported to the PlayStation Vita with several improvements as Persona 4: Golden last year.

Check out the teaser trailer for yourself after the jump.Read More

Sega Purchases Index Corp, Owners of Atlus, For $141M

Posted on September 22, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

Index Corp, the troubled owner of third party publisher Atlus, has agreed to sell off their stake in the popular company to SEGA for the equivalent of $141 million dollars. Should everything go well the newly formed Sega Dream Corporation will take ownership of Index’s intellectual property and business operations no later than November 1st.

This acquisition gives SEGA an ever-growing portfolio of long standing game franchises that will surely fit well alongside Sonic, Jet Set Radio and other classics. Joining the SEGA family are the popular Shin Megami Tensei series, Persona franchise and other JRPG titles. All of this comes after SEGA purchased the developers of Company of Heroes, Relic, from the now defunct THQ this past June.

If you’re anything like me the first thing you’d be worried about is whether or not this deal will result in Atlus changing their strategy for game releases in the west. Up until this point Atlus has been a large part of the niche JRPG market alongside XSeed, NIS America and to a certain point Square Enix. Each of these companies have taken risks by localizing and releasing titles that are far from guaranteed successes in the West, just look at the mixed reaction Mugen Souls received last year!Read More

Dragon’s Crown | Review

Posted on August 6, 2013 by Jason Fayta

Final Fight, Knights of the Round, The Punisher, The Simpsons, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, X-Men, Golden Axe, Double Dragon, and of course, Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara . . . any of these titles bring back memories–preferably fond ones? The beat’em up, as it’s so aptly referred to, is a genre that had its heyday in the ’90s, when arcades were still a thing, TGIF was the best damn night in television, and Star Wars: Episode I had yet to ruin everything. It was a genre, along with fighters, that dominated my childhood, and while the past few years have been kind to fighting fans, fans of  beat’em ups have had to sift through digital offerings for some of that mind-numbing, side-scrolling action.Read More

Shin Megami Tensei IV | Review

Posted on July 17, 2013 by Jason Nason

Shin Megami Tensei IV is a fun and deep RPG experience that blends traditional RPG gameplay with monster hunting tactics which leads to a rewarding gameplay experience.

The Shin Megami Tensei RPG series began in Japan in 1992 on Super Famicom, and neither the first installment nor its sequel was published in North America. In 2004 Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne was the first SMT game in North America, although “III” was removed from the PlayStation 2 title. The SMT series later spun-off several sub-series, including Persona, Devil Summoner, Devil Survivor, Digital Devil Saga, and the standalone Strange Journey. This new RPG is considered the fourth in the Shin Megami Tensei mainline series.Read More

Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers Coming To 3DS

Posted on April 9, 2013 by Les Major

In just a week Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers will be released on the 3DS. Don’t let it’s history put you off but Soul Hackers was originally released for the Sega Saturn way back in 1997 and then later slightly revamped in 1999 for the Playstation. It is a sequel to Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner but Soul Hackers may be being released first for the 3DS due to it’s lower difficulty compared to previous titles in the series.

The game itself is unreleased in North America, so Soul Hackers is new to our shores. From the trailer following the break, it looks like Etrian Odyssey fans should feel at home in the games interface. However Soul Hackers for the 3DS uses an automap feature instead of encouraging gamers to fill one out of their own as the Etrian Odyssey series does.Read More
