Niantic Enrages Pokemon Go Players By Speed Limiting PokeStops

Posted on November 7, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

The latest Pokemon Go update on both Android and iOS adds some great additions like daily quests and bonus XP for taking over gyms but players have found that PokeStops are no longer commuter friendly.

In the past if your character was traveling faster than what the game considers walking speed you would need to tap an “I’m a passenger!” dialogue box in-order to continue playing the game. After this latest update the dialogue box still appears but attempting to spin a PokeStop while on a commuter train or in a car may result in a “Please Try Again” message. It should be noted that these messages do not appear on 100% of available stops when traveling fast.

Can’t Spin Poke-Stops While Going Fast!

Reddit user BrandonOR did some experimenting in their city and found that when traveling at 18 – 20 Miles Per Hour the “tray again” error message was prevelant. When traveling at 25 MPH the game would allow them to claim 60% of available PokeStops.
Here is the relevant bit from that Reddit thread:

“Update: after a few more loops it feels odd, like 18-20 mph will make it say try again later but I was collecting from them at 25mph. It may be that the game is just running poorly but 40% of my poke-stops did this, that’s a big ass chunk of what I should have, and no, I am not getting stuff behind the scenes. My journal shows nothing “

User JacobRFeenstra feels for the rural users who might have limited amounts of Poke-Stops in their city but perhaps these changes have to do with Trainers being behind the wheel:

“I feel for commuters and rural players. In the Netherlands most people have at least 5 pokestops if they live in a small town and live in close proximity (10-20kms) to a larger city with an abundance of stops. I despise people who use their phone behind the steering wheel and i’m pretty sure Niantic is trying to reduce those, those momo’s are putting other people’s lives in danger. Just drive 30 minutes to a place and walk for an hour. “

How do you feel about the speed locking of Poke-Stops?

Magic: the Gathering – Puzzle Quest | REVIEW

Posted on September 15, 2016 by Jason Nason

There are a lot of puzzle games, and even more of the matching gem style puzzle games. While Candy Crush seems to be the most well known game in the genre, I think the very first one that I ever played was Bejeweled.

For the most part they’re pretty much the same thing. You match up gems of the same colour of three or more and they vanish. You then collect points and more gems fall to fill in the void. If the falling gems make more matches then you get a combo, more points, and so on. The goal for these games are mostly high score.

Later on games started adding in other elements to these games such as RPG battles to extend the life of the games. No longer was the matching of the gems merely the goal of the game but a means to an end. The gems could be used to gain points which could be used to power fighters or other things. I reviewed a mobile game a while back called Spirit Stones that did this well, as did Puzzle and Dragons Z + Super Mario Edition for the Nintendo 3DS.

Pokemon Go Exceeds 500,000,000 Worldwide Downloads

Posted on September 8, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Nintendo & Niantic have jointly announced that Pokemon GO has exceeded five hundred million downloads worldwide across the Android & iOS platforms since the game’s worldwide earlier this summer.

Describing the game this is what the CEO of the Pokemon Company had to say:

“The team at Niantic developed a unique experience that merges their expertise in cutting-edge location-based technologies with the beloved characters and classic gameplay of Pokémon. This ideal match of the right brand and the right technology has resonated with hundreds of millions of existing and new fans around the world.”

In the game players take on the role of Pokemon Trainers, assembling their own dream team of Pocket Monsters and take them into the real world. Blending elements of reality through augmented reality Pokemon GO uses the player’s rear facing cameras to insert the monsters into the real world. GPS is used to encourage trainers to venture out into their city or town to discover what wild monsters, poke stops and gyms await them.

500 million downloads isn’t the only major milestone that Pokemon GO  has passed – the game also set the record for the most download during its initial release in the United States.  Pokemon GO also has the distinction of sitting at the top of the top grossing chart on the Canadian App Store as well.

Pokemom GO will also come to the Apple Watch later this year with the public release of WatchOS 3. The companion Watch App will let trainers know when a wild Pokemon has appeared, if they are near a PokeStop and it will also allow players to hatch eggs while walking.,

Super Mario Dashing His Way Onto iPad/iPhone Feels Like A Natural Fit

Posted on September 7, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Mario’s portly plumber will be making his way onto both iPad & iPhone with the release of Super Mario Run this December. Mario creator & development treasure Shigeru Miyamoto took the stage during Apple’s fall hardware event to unveil the title. This game is Nintendo’s third mobile on Apple’s hardware after their attempt at social media with Miitomo and the smash hit of the summer Pokemon Go.

In part Miyamoto-san said at the event:

“Super Mario has evolved whenever he has encountered a new platform, and for the first time ever, players will be able to enjoy a full-fledged Super Mario game with just one hand, giving them the freedom to play while riding the subway or my favorite, eating a hamburger.”

Super Mario Run will be a full featured Mario adventure designed with a mobile first approach. The game will not feature micro-transaction or charge players for lives, instead players will be able to play an introductory portion of the game for free with later sections of the game being locked behind as yet to be revealed payment system. For those worrying that they’d have to put in 0.99$ every time Mario & friends die, fear not!

Like similar “endless runner” titles on the platform Mario will run unassisted and the user inputs the timing of his jumps by tapping on the screen, as Miyamoto was quoted above this is a game that can be played with one hand but without sacrificing the Mario spirit. One of the revealed modes has players guiding Mario through pre-designed courses with the goal of collecting coins and beating the ghosts of their friends.

Personally I feel like Super Mario Run will fit nicely on mobile platforms. For a little while it worked perfectly for Nintendo’s 90s rival with Sonic Runners – until SEGA fucked up the entire game with a free-to-play scheme that bleed users dry and launched crossover events for titles we’ll never see in the west. Eventually SEGA’s whole monetization scheme collapsed in on itself forcing the publisher to shutter Sonic Runners. Here’s hoping that Nintendo’s one time payments to unlock portions of Super Mario Runners can live up to the late Iwata’s vision of “Free to Start Games”.

Pokémon GO updated again with minor bug fixes

Posted on August 8, 2016 by Jason Nason

Niantic announced today that mobile game sensation Pokémon GO has been updated to version 0.33.0 for Android and 1.3.0 for iOS devices.

Below are some release notes and comments from the development team.

  • Added a dialog to remind Trainers that they should not play while traveling above a certain speed.
  • Trainers must confirm they are not driving in order to continue playing.
  • Made improvements to the accuracy of a curveball throw
  • Fixed a bug that prevented ”Nice,” ”Great,” and “Excellent” Poké Ball throws from awarding the appropriate XP bonuses.
  • Fixed achievements showing incorrect Medal icons.
  • Enabled the ability for Trainers to change their nickname one time. Please choose your new nickname wisely.
  • Resolved issues with the battery saver mode on iOS and re-enabled the feature.
  • Added visuals of Team Leaders Candela, Blanche, and Spark.
  • Currently testing a variation of the “Nearby Pokémon” feature with a subset of users. During this period you may see some variation in the nearby Pokémon UI.
  • Minor text fixes

I haven’t taken the app out for a GO since the update, but just a quick look inside the app after the update doesn’t show a lot of cosmetic difference, with the notable exception that the “nearby Pokémon” screen now shows a bit of grass behind the character.

We’ll let you know more as we experience the update.

Niantic Responds To User Complaints About Pokevision & 3 Step Removal

Posted on August 2, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Niantic the developers behind Pokemon Go have finally issued a rather lengthy statement addressing user’s complaints after the removal of the ‘steps’ feature that allowed trainers to track nearby Pokemon, the closure of 3rd party sites like PokeVision that allowed players to see real time monster placement and the lack of availability in South America.

This particular Facebook post comes after a number of users on the r/PokemonGO subreddit gained notoriety for successfully requesting refunds for in-game purchases. Users have reported receiving partial or full refunds for every dollar spent on Pokemon Go by claiming that the most recent update, which removed the steps feature, damaged the game and does not fulfill the original vision promised by Niantic.

Here are the instructions provided to iphone users by [Insert username] from reddit to get a refund on itunes. This particular thread exploded with over 3,000+ replies – ranging from outraged, doubtful of both Nintendo & Niantic to straight up finding the lack of communication humorous.

How to get a refund using the web

1.Go to Apple’s problem reports page:

http://reportaproblem.apple.com/

2.Login with your Apple ID user name (typically your email address) and password.

3.Select the appropriate tab—all, music, movies, TV shows, apps, or books.

4.Find the purchase you want refunded

5.Select Open item but not functions as expected

6.Fill in the description,

Pokemon-20th_Logo-600x440

Niantic’s statement probably doesn’t bring the kind of news that many trainers were expecting: The changes 3-step has helped ease load on the servers in the early days of the game, but the feature was not functioning to Niantic’s “product vision” and thus had to be removed. Their lack of communication is apparently due to the fact that Niantic’s staff are working around the clock to improve Pokemon Go and as of publication Niantic is still hiring for a dedicated community manager for Pokemon Go.

Here is their full statement from Facebook:

“Trainers,

As many of you know, we recently made some changes to Pokémon GO.

– We have removed the ‘3-step’ display in order to improve upon the underlying design. The original feature, although enjoyed by many, was also confusing and did not meet our underlying product goals. We will keep you posted as we strive to improve this feature.

– We have limited access by third-party services which were interfering with our ability to maintain quality of service for our users and to bring Pokémon GO to users around the world. The large number of users has made the roll-out of Pokémon GO around the world an… interesting… challenge. And we aren’t done yet! Yes, Brazil, we want to bring the game to you (and many other countries where it is not yet available).

We have read your posts and emails and we hear the frustration from folks in places where we haven’t launched yet, and from those of you who miss these features. We want you to know that we have been working crazy hours to keep the game running as we continue to launch globally. If you haven’t heard us Tweeting much it’s because we’ve been heads down working on the game. But we’ll do our best going forward to keep you posted on what’s going on.

Be safe, be nice to your fellow trainers, and keep on exploring.

The Pokémon GO team”

What do you think about Niantic’s statement? Do you have faith they will fix Pokemon Go before the player base leaves en mass?

Neko Atsume Update [1.7.0]: Three new cats and tons of toys!

Posted on July 14, 2016 by Renee Gittins

Right in the midst of the summer heat, Neko Atsume has released another big update! New goodies, backgrounds and kitties have joined the ranks of the casual cat-collecting game, along with some other hidden treats!

There’s definitely a general beach theme to this update, full of seashells and even pirates!

First, let’s look at all of the new items:

876566df2aa84d789920387448ec337b

  • Beach Ball – 85 Silver
  • Treasure-box – 400 Silver
  • Luxury Treasure-box – 20 Gold
  • Dino Deluxe – 999 Silver
  • Grass Cushion (Red) – 200 Silver
  • Grass Cushion (Navy) – 200 Silver
  • Aluminium Bowl – 130 Silver
  • Manta Gel Mat – 450 Silver
  • Mister Penguin – 300 Silver
  • Shell Tunnel (Pink) – 400 Silver
  • Shell Tunnel (Blue) – 400 Silver
  • Shell Tunnel (White) – 400 Silver

At 999 Silver, the Dino Deluxe now beats out the Tower of Treats as the most expensive Silver item. It does lend itself to some pretty adorable scratching, but seems like it has a low cat to space ratio, especially in comparison to the Tower of Treats.

You may have also noted a cute little pig in the goodies picture! It is a katori senko, a holder for insect repelling incense coils, commonly used during the summer to keep pesky mosquitoes away from homes.

The katori senko will likely be a seasonal change much like the snow that appeared in Neko Atsume during the winter. Another seasonal change is also visible in this latest patch, flowering cacti in the Western Style house design.

And, last, but certainly not least, let’s meet our adorable new kitty pals!

There is a new rare cat and two others. The rare is the swash buckling Bengal Jack! A pirate themed kitty lured out by the Luxury Treasure-box. His two companions are Pasty and Chip!

Bengal Jack will even find other kitties in his treasure chest! Or maybe he’s just looking for some booty.

Pokemon Go Plus Possibly Delayed In Canada

Posted on July 13, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Some bad news for Canadian Pokémon fans who might be looking to get the complete experience once the mobile app launches above the 49th parallel -it looks like the optional Pokémon Go Plus bracelet that can be paired with the game may have been delayed.

In an email I received from Amazon.ca about my pre-order for the Pokémon Go Plus, I was notified me that the item had been delayed. Originally I pre-ordered at the end of June and Amazon had expected the bracelet to be available by the end of this month. Their updated Pokémon Go Plus page now lists the item for a September 2016 release. That is a full two-month delay for the peripheral.

In part the email from Amazon.ca said:

“Hello from Amazon.ca.

We wanted to let you know there’s a delay with one or more items in the order you placed on June 29, 2016

“Nintendo Pokemon Go Plus – Not Machine Specific  – Nintendo 3DS Standard Edition”
Estimated ship date: September 06, 2016″

pokemon_go_plus

Of course, it doesn’t matter if the Go Plus is available here or not while Pokémon GO is still unavailable in the Canadian Google Play or Apple App Store. This hasn’t stopped thousands of people in Canada from side-loading the game via an SD card on Android or changing the region of the IPhone in order to play the game.  According to some unofficial statistics, Pokémon Go might be installed in as many as 6% of Canadian Android devices.

Nintendo has yet to provide a release date for Pokémon Go in Canada, but if you are playing the game in another country or through side-loading then you might find our Beginner’s Guide for New Trainers interesting.

Pokémon GO Released in the US

Posted on July 7, 2016 by Renee Gittins

After being released to Australia and New Zealand for iOS and Android earlier on July 6th, Pokémon GO has now been officially released in the United States, much to the joy of many Pokémon fans.

screenshot-6

Pokémon GO is an augmented reality phone app from Niantic, the creators of Ingress. Much like Ingress, Pokémon GO is a GPS-based game that will require users to explore the real world. In Pokémon GO, players can find Pokémon, eggs, Poké Balls and other items, then use them to battle other trainers and even gym leaders.

The game starts by placing the original starter Pokémon around you, allowing you to catch one. From that point until level 5, you can gain experience by visiting PokéStops where you can pick up items and by catching Pokémon that appear in the world with a finger-flick toss of a Poké Ball.

Once you reach level 5, you are required to pick a team to join, much like Ingress’ Resistance and Enlightened. However, Pokémon GO sports three teams: Team Instinct (Yellow), Team Mystic (Blue) and Team Valor (Red). You can support gyms owned by your team by leaving Pokémon there to fight and battle gyms owned by another team. You battle by tapping and swiping on your screen.

gyms

While the phone app is free, there are numerous micro-transactions happy to relieve you of your money. You can discover Poké Balls and other items out in the world, but you can also purchase them. I also have a feeling that more customization items might be available for gold in the future.

pxfuyf6wohhy2ywo8pdq

Later in July, another item will be available for purchase: the Pokémon GO Plus, a wrist-worn wearable with that “notifies the player about events in the game—such as the appearance of a Pokémon nearby—using an LED and vibration.” It also promises the ability to “catch Pokémon or perform other simple actions by pressing the button on the device.”

Good luck out there, Pokémon masters!
