Super Mario 3D World | Review

Posted on January 6, 2014 by Les Major

I figured I’d enjoy Super Mario 3D World, but I didn’t realize how much fun it would be until I got into it. Throughout the game there is a lot of nostalgia mixed with newer style gameplay. In a lot of ways the game reminded me a lot of Super Mario Bros. 2, the US version. I’d actually originally gone in wishing this was a sequel to that part of the series, caught up with playing as the four heroes again that starred in the US remake of Doki Doki Panic. However 3D World quickly won me over and made me forget that

After a Decade Fans Revive Resident Evil: Outbreak Servers

Posted on January 4, 2014 by Rae Michelle Richards

Death just can’t keep a good game down. Similar to how the T-Virus re-animates the dead in the Resident Evil series, fans have revived the online component for the Japanese versions of Resident Evil: Outbreak & Resident Evil: Outbreak File #2. Using packet captures from the Japanese release of Outbreak dedicated fans were able to re-create the game’s online mode albeit with some limited functionality. According to their FAQ the private server supports the creation of lobbies & games in the original Outbreak and support for three different game modes was added to Outbreak File #2 recently (Boys Only, Girls

January 2014’s First Games With Gold Title

Posted on January 4, 2014 by Joshua Rust

While many gamers have started to question the integrity of Microsoft’s Games with Gold program due to offering games that are years old, such as last month’s Gears of War, it seems they are listening to the community and are starting to offer up newer games. The most recent game that was released through Microsoft’s Games with Gold was Shoot Many Robots, which is a fun cooperative arcade title. This month’s release, however, sees you as an undercover cop that is trying to take down one of Hong Kong’s most dangerous groups: The Triads.

The game itself, due out this March on PS3, is focused on the Hundred Knight, your character. You’re as a servant to the swamp witch Metallia. It’s your job to help her expand her swamp all over the world of Medea by destroying pillars that are holding it back. The latest press release that came with these screens brings up the questions: “What prevents Metallia from leaving the swamp? Why do the

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds | Review

Posted on January 1, 2014 by Jason Nason

Nintendo has done it again. You would think that after twenty years and just about as many Zelda titles that the series would have gotten stale. Everything that you think could have been done in a game which, at its core, hasn’t really changed since the start. Well, except for Zelda II but that is a whole other type of game. You would be wrong. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is the first new game for the Nintendo 3DS and the developers have utilized the system’s stereoscopic 3D effect to perfection. They have introduced a brand new

My Favourite Games of 2013: The Last of Us

Posted on December 23, 2013 by Rae Michelle Richards

With the year coming to an end and game of the year awards being bestowed upon some of the biggest games of the year on other outlets, I’d like to take a few moments to share some of the best gaming moments I’ve experienced these past twelve months. We’re all about being different here at Broken Joysticks so instead of a series of GOTY choices here is one of the four games that left an impression on me. Let’s kick things off with one of the best action titles of this year, the story of a bond formed between two

Rosalina Joins Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8

Posted on December 18, 2013 by Jason Nason

Rosalina, who was introduced in the wildly enjoyable Super Mario Galaxy games for Wii, will be a playable character, accompanied by her starry friend, Luma when Super Smash Bros. launches on the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS in 2014. Not only that but she will also be playable in Mario Kart 8. I am personally thrilled at the addition and am glad that Nintendo keeps revealling new playable characters for Super Smash Bros. There can never be enough characters to battle it out with and I am also hoping that there are plans to release even more as DLC after

Move Over Mario, Dr. Luigi is in the Office

Posted on December 18, 2013 by Jason Nason

Nintendo is continuing The Year of Luigi with another title featuring everyone’s favourite brother. Nintendo is following up the WiiWare title Dr. Mario with a new game in the Wii U eShop in Dr. Luigi. Much like in the previous game, players will be challenged to line up color-coded pills to destroy viruses. Unlike in the previous game where you were given small two-tone pills, the capsules in Dr. Luigi are, of course, L-shaped. In the last game during multiplayer when you chained a combo by clearing pills you would send “junk” into your opponents screen. This time the game
