Editorial: Is It Time For Another Console War?

Posted on January 19, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

The 1990’s saw a period of unprecedented growth for the console market. After that crash of the late 70s, Nintendo revitalized the industry in the 1980s and found themselves alone on the mountain top with everyone else aspiring to take their spot. Sega, Sony, and even Microsoft would eventually try to dethrone Nintendo. The competition would lead to an unprecedented amount of innovation and competition that was good for the consumer. Now as the age of VR dawns, I ask, is it time for another (VR) console war?

A Few Things You Learn When Buying A Used Oculus Rift Off Of Kijiji

Posted on January 19, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Two weeks ago while pursuing the online computer classifieds I came across something I didn’t think I’d see locally for some time, an Oculus VR headset at a reasonable price. After the announcement that Oculus wanted $600 USD for the upcoming consumer version (known as CV1 in the Oculus community) I figured my dreams of trying modern VR were all but washed away, except for maybe the odd industry convention for the foreseeable future. Here are three things that I’ve learned after acquiring and using my Oculus DK1 for more than a week.

Zen Pinball 2: The Force Awakens

Posted on January 18, 2016 by Erika

Recently released, Star Wars Pinball: The Force Awakens pinball pack for Zen Pinball 2 is Zen Studio’s newest themed offering for players. This pack features the two aptly named tables Star Wars Pinball: The Force Awakens and Star Wars Pinball: Might of the First Order, with themes from Jakku and a Star Destroyer respectively. As with the the previous licenses for Zen Pinball 2, these two tables are not only top notch, but stunningly beautiful as to be expected from Zen Studios. First thing I’ve noticed, is it’s either because of the board layouts for the two, or my eyes

Fan Made Half-Life 2 Campaign Given The Seal of Approval From Valve

Posted on January 18, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Nova Prospekt
While some fans have spent the time between iterations of the Half-Life series speculating about potential leaks and other tidbits others have used this time to create their own original content set in the Half-Life universe. One such stand-alone game is the upcoming Prospekt which has the unique distinction of being one of the few fan creations to receive the official seal of approval from series developer Valve. Developed over the course of 18-months single handily by modder Richard Seabrook, Prospeckt has players venturing once again into the decaying combine prison Nova Prospekt, which is used to turn prisoners into

Upcoming Dragon Ball RPG for 3DS, Dragon Ball: Project Fusion

Posted on January 18, 2016 by Broken Joysticks

Some news from 2chan.net , a popular Japanese image board, there seems to be a new Dragon Ball 3DS RPG on the horizon! Namely Dragon Ball:Project Fusion. The images show Broly and Goku at the end pose of a fusion dance, so where this could go is anyone’s guess. As far as I can tell the main focus of the game will of course be on various fusions, likely one’s we’ve yet to see. Honestly, it looks pretty cool. Dragon Ball fans are certainly no stranger to Dragon Ball “what if” stories, and this will probably be no different. There’s not a whole

Posted on January 18, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Promising to allow players to “relive the era defining classic in beautiful next-generation environments” iRam Gamer’s first teaser trailer for their Shadow Moses project is a thing of beauty. Seeing iconic areas like the loading bay from the opening chapter of the original Metal Gear Solid, the chamber where your fight Ocelot for the first time and the highly decorated office that houses the fight with Psycho Mantis certainly brings back a lot of memories. The Shadow Moses project is a fan run development effort to recreate the original Metal Gear Solid in Unreal Engine 4. This brief teaser trailer

Hacknet, the Unix Developer’s Review

Posted on January 18, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

By special guest editor Robyn Robo It’s an odd feeling writing a review about Hacknet, coming home from my software job while logged into a Linux desktop with a terminal window blinking and notes in my text editor. A browser lies obscured in the background with an email account waiting for attention. I’ve come home from work where there is another setup of the same text editor full of Python and notes, multiple chat and email clients running, log ins to hosting services showing list up list of servers I can access with a click from my terminal manager. Although

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within | Retrospective

Posted on January 18, 2016 by Kenny Keelan

It’s a pretty well known stereotype in the North American movie world – perhaps globally – that movies based on the stories told in video games generally aren’t that great. Of course, that’s a somewhat mixed opinion with the people who actually make them because, in spite of this, a great number of those movies turn a pretty nice profit, some of them even hitting blockbuster status. Among those that were panned critically, though, is a diamond in the rough that was often seen as a great standalone movie that suffered against a franchise name that was well-known for being

SpaceX’s Latest Rocket Landing Attempt Ends In Fantastic Explosion

Posted on January 18, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

SpaceX
Before we can colonize other worlds or send astronauts on journeys outside of our immediate interstellar backdoor we must first find a way to reuse spacecraft. This is the current goal of Tesla Motors founder Elon Musk’s SpaceX company, who today attempted to land a craft on a floating platform after deploying a satellite. They absolutely nailed the first part, but the landing? Not so much. What could only be described as an epic fireball of failure, the Falcon rocket failed to connect with of the latches for it’s four legs. The rocket promptly keeled over onto the landing pad
