Posted on March 16, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

CryEngine, the engine, and tool set that power AAA franchises like Crysis, Far Cry and others had a brand new version unveiled yesterday at the Games Developer Conference in San Francisco. Titled CryEngine V this brand new iteration of the development toolkit from Crytek focuses on making game development more accessible for AAA, developers on a budget and indies alike. How exactly does Crytek hope to make their engine available to more developers? By shifting away from an expensive paid licensing model to a more flexible “pay what you can” model. This means that developers can gain access to the

Posted on March 16, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Homefront The Revolution
Tonight in San Francisco longtime gaming website Destructoid celebrated their 10th anniversary with a downtown bash for both GDC attendees and the public. They also partnered with Deep Silver and Dambuster Studios to help promote the upcoming Homefront The Revolution. I got the chance to attend this pretty sweet party, here are my impressions. The line to get into the party was absolutely massive, fans & conference attendees alike lined up around the block for their chance at getting into the celebration. Surprisingly things moved at a rather brisk pace and despite the line’s size I was into the event in

Posted on March 15, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Xbox One
Yesterday at GDC 2016 Microsoft announced that Xbox One players will finally be able to play online with their friends on other platforms starting this year. Developers will be able to bridge the platform gap between Windows 10 and Xbox One and the first game to support this new functionality is none other than last years’ surprise hit Rocket League. Potentially the most shocking news is that Microsoft appears open to allowing players on longtime rival Sony’s PlayStation Network to play against one another at some point in the future. In the official blog post on the Xbox.com News Wire,

GDC 2016 Editorial: We Are The Underdogs

Posted on March 15, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

It is undeniable that the annual Games Developer Conference (or GDC) is a spectacular event. Once a year sharp & inquisitive minds involved in various facets of game development, marketing, business, and journalism converge on the Moscone Center in San Francisco California for a week of hands-on demos, networking and panel discussions. Broken Joysticks is by no means a large player in the games journalism space, so just how did a small scrappy site like ours become the journalism underdogs at this year’s conference?

Wildly popular bomb diffusal game Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, was released in October of last year. Since then it has sold over 200,000 copies on Steam. The game’s popularity has been boosted by several factors including its integration of VR. Plus its just a dam fun game. Ben Kane gave a talk yesterday at GDC (attended by our very own Rae and Renee team!) where he discussed the sucess of the game, and announced it had sold over 200,000 copies on Steam. So what made the game such a sucess? The game was first brought to my attention when I

AMD releases new dual GPU, GPU Radeon Pro Duo

Posted on March 15, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

AMD is coming out swinging this year. Their latest line of Radeon cards, the Fiji line, have put up a serious competitor to NVidia that hasnt been seen in the last 4 or 5 years. Now they have entered the double card package market, previously occupied by the lone NVida Titan card. If the specs released today are true, this is in fact not a competitor, but rather a Titan killer. AMD has started this card off with two Fiji chips, which means we’re still looking at two GPUs with 4GB of HBM RAM each. Which does feel a little odd

10 Cloverfield Lane | Film Review

Posted on March 14, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

10 Cloverfield Lane
10 Cloverfield Lane is the spiritual successor to 2008’s Cloverfield and the directorial debut of Dan Trachtenberg. To give away the plot of this film is to give away a lot of the fun there is to be had upon your first viewing. Instead of talking about the specific plot points addressed in the film, this review will focus on the characters and the type of tension that 10 Cloverfield Lane excels at creating. It is absolutely essential to the enjoyment of this film top go in knowing as little about it as possible.

It’s been just a few weeks since the last system update, but the Nintendo 3DS firmware has been updated again. This is a very minor update which updates the 3DS system from version 10.6.0-31U to version 10.7.0-32U. There aren’t any big changes in this update, with the only text on the update the very same as last month’s update. The release of Pokkén Tournament is nearly here, with the game hitting store shelves in North America this Friday. This finally brings the high-definition game play and over-the-top action to never-before-seen battles between some of the most recognizable Pokémon characters. Pokkén Tournament is of course a collaboration between The Pokémon Company and BANDAI Namco Entertainment Inc. The game is a new fighting game for Wii U that lets players use their favorite Pokémon characters to battle it out in fighting arenas. This looks and feels like a combination of the turn-based battles fans will recognize from the role-playing series with
