“Gamers Are Revolting” – Hover: Revolt of Gamers | Review

Posted on June 2, 2017 by Broken Joysticks

So Hover: Revolt of Gamers is a game Kickstarted in 2014 (remember this) inspired by Jet Set Radio and Mirror’s Edge. While I have zero experience playing the evergreen classic of JSR, I have a lot of respect for the original Mirror’s Edge and a bit of it for its… requel. Hover starts us off by waking us up in our customizable avatar from a Cloning Vat, and takes us through a short tutorial that gives us the basic controls in a small controlled environment before unleashing us out in the world of Trash Haven, where the “resistance” is led

Puyo Puyo Tetris | REVIEW

Posted on May 30, 2017 by Meghan Kass

One staple in video games that seems to carry over generation after generation is Tetris. Most people know about this game and most have played it at some point in their life. You would be hard pressed to find someone who has never come across this game at some point in their life. Another series of puzzle tile games that many have come across in some form is Puyo Puyo. If you have played Doctor Mario, you have played something like Puyo Puyo even if you haven’t realized it. What Sega has brought to us is two great flavors together

Walking Dead: A New Frontier- Episode 4 “Thicker Than Water” | Review

Posted on May 17, 2017 by Meghan Kass

There is one issue I find with the episodic format for games, and that is also the same problem I have with television episodes as well; sometimes you get episodes that are just bridges to bigger idea or moment instead of entertaining moments in and of themselves and leave you feeling a little less than fulfilled, yet still wanting more because of the implications of what’s to come. As the penultimate episode of The Walking Dead: A New Frontier comes and goes, I can’t help but feel a little hungry for more, and not in the best of ways.

Mario Sports Superstars | REVIEW

Posted on May 13, 2017 by Jason Nason

I’ll admit that I have a soft spot for the Mario spinoff games. No players gaming experience would be complete with a spin around the racetrack of Mario Kart for example, but I’m talking about the sport titles. From golf to soccer, baseball to 3-on-3 basketball, the Mario crew has done it all. The latest Mario spinoff title for the Nintendo 3DS brings five sports together in one package, and does all of these sports justice. Mario Sports Superstars features five full-on sports and features Soccer, Tennis, Golf, Baseball, and Horse Racing. This game is what you get if you

Touhou Genso Wanderer and Double Focus | REVIEW

Posted on May 9, 2017 by Les Major

Touhou Games
I have to admit something. When I first got into this game, and the accompanying Touhou Double Focus, I had no clue what the series really was. Being a happy little social media butterfly, I’d seen the characters scattered across the web and loving crafting in a billion fan art pieces. When I saw a mystery dungeon like title and a side scrolling metroidvania game were on the way in the same pack, I definitely wanted to learn more! From an outside perspective, the quirks of the characters are surprisingly easy to get into. Between both games I was able

Vikings: Wolves of Midgard | Review

Posted on May 5, 2017 by Meghan Kass

Hack and slash games have been a favorite genre of game of mine for a long time. From Devil May Cry to God of War, they are full of adrenaline-fueled excitement and of course, plenty of action and enemies to slay. The newest to the genre is Vikings: Wolves of Midgard and while this may seem like a Diablo clone ready to be forgotten by time, there is a charm and fun to this game that should be given more than just a quick glance.   Vikings: Wolves of Midgard has you chose the role of Viking or Shield Maiden

Wonderboy: The Dragon’s Trap | Review

Posted on April 21, 2017 by Meghan Kass

Back in the ancient year of 1989, there was a game called Wonderboy III: The Dragon’s Trap. This game was the third in the Wonderboy series, brought to us by Sega. These platformer/action adventure games about Wonder Boy trying to undo the curse that changes him into various monsters was well received and given a lot of love by critics and gamers alike. It was praised for its beautiful, colorful sprites and backgrounds, its challenging gameplay and overall fun. Fast forward to 2016 and an indie developer Lizardcube and publisher DotEmu announced a remake of Wonderboy III, appropriately calling it Wonderboy:

The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series- A New Frontier episode 3: Above the Law | Review

Posted on April 9, 2017 by Meghan Kass

Telltale Games has come out with the newest episode in their Walking Dead series. While the two part opener was good, it needed to really develop our new protagonist in order to live up to the love that the games built up for Clementine or even Lee. Javier is certainly not unlikable, but can Telltale continue its line up of strong protagonists? Can they build up Javier without neglecting Clementine? How will the story of Javier’s group progress and what will be learned about this New Frontier? This mid season episode has a lot of answers and story to unbox.

FAST RMX | REVIEW

Posted on March 20, 2017 by Les Major

There was something magical about going into an arcade in the 90s. Seeing the latest racing games all lined up with amazing graphics and blistering speed. It was just the sort of experience you couldn’t get at home on a console. As the years have gone on we’ve had games like that arrive in living rooms. FAST RMX has the visuals and the speed that really give you that rush of playing an arcade hit. It’s a futuristic joy ride with a few twists to keep things interesting. You may not be familiar with the FAST series if you don’t

A Look at Guts and Glory

Posted on March 4, 2017 by Meghan Kass

There is nothing I enjoy more than a pleasant ride through the country; either by car or bike, there simply is nothing better. Of course, if you are the characters in Guts and Glory, there might be something a little better than a ride through the country. This game, developed by HakJak, has taken all what could be logical, relaxing and child friendly and turned it upside into the absurd, violent and nonsensical. With a strong community building already for this game and tracks full of surrealism, ragdoll physics and a sense of humor, it’s no wonder this game is

Project DIVA Future Tone: Hatsune Miku | Review

Posted on February 23, 2017 by Meghan Kass

Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Future Tone is an arcade style rhythm game published by Sega. Future tone may be the most comprehensive Hatsune Miku game ever published as it boasts 220 songs if you purchase the bundle that includes Future Sound and Colorful Tone, After the disappointing lack of songs in Project Diva X and overuse of exposition, will Future Tone’s sheer volume of music be enough to satisfy Hatsune Miku and rhythm game fans? Is imitating and porting the arcade version of Hatsune Miku games the right direction? If compared to the disappointing Project Diva X, Future Tone makes

Circles is an independent, casual puzzle game by developer Jeroen Wimmers. Circles boasts its 90+ levels and bonus content and its unique intuitive game play that doesn’t require lengthy tutorials,  words and a “zen” atmosphere that promotes relaxation and the ability to “let your mind wander”.  Does this minimalist circular based game succeed in its efforts to relax and be so intuitive that you don’t need tutorials or texts to distract you from relaxing? Or does it fall short? As far as design and atmosphere, there are some fine choices that do set the desired mood the designer intended. the

Mr. Pumpkin Adventure | REVIEW

Posted on February 10, 2017 by Jason Nason

Mr. Pumpkin Adventure is a puzzling little game which is so odd that it almost defies description. In the story of the game the protagonist of the game – Mr. Pumpkin adventures in the strange vegetable kingdom only to find his memory. Basically the game is a point and click (or in the case of the Wii U a tap and tap) game where you try to solve puzzles and advance to the goal. The game pretty much throws you into the thick of things with little explanation. After a brief comic strip style narration you are left to start

Yakuza 0 Review

Posted on January 23, 2017 by Broken Joysticks

Game Reviewed By: John Bridgman Evaluating an installment of an established franchise offers particular challenges. Do you look at it in a vacuum, or as a part of the bigger picture? Should a title stand on its own, or work necessarily with the rest of the series? There is no simple answer to these questions. Yakuza 0, releasing Tuesday, January 24th, is the prequel to Sega’s long-running Yakuza series, and overall a great game in its own right. Taking place in Japan during the real estate boom of the 80s, Yakuza 0 tells the story of the series’ main protagonist Kiryu

Walking Dead: A New Frontier: Episode 1- Ties That Bond (Part one and two)

Posted on January 17, 2017 by Meghan Kass

It is not a secret that I have a great fondness for Telltale and their games. As much as I love their games, I feel none compare to what they have done with The Walking Dead. While others may differ in opinion, I personally feel not only has Telltale done an impressive job with the series, I feel they may have even surpassed the TV show at this point. I have followed Clementine and her many companions and stories since season one of the Telltale series and not only have they made one of the most charming children characters to
