Nekopara Volume 2 review, return to La Soleil Patisserie

Posted on February 27, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Nekopara Volume 2 returns us to the bakery La Soleil patisserie where we last left our lovely cat girls Chocola and Vanilla. When last we left them they had reached a happy ending and were heading back to the bakery with their master Kashou Minaduki  in tow. Volume 2 picks up right where volume 1 left off, our two primary cat girls are living in the bakery and things are going pretty well. Unlike the majority of the first volume, all is not well in La soleil. One of the first things we see after the game starts is a small

Super Galaxy Squadron EX | Review

Posted on February 26, 2016 by Erika

A shmup can be categorized as a “you vs the world” shoot-em up that’s hard as hell and can often be rage inducing. Super Galaxy Squadron EX really isn’t  that rage inducing but its still a shump.  Super Galaxy Squadron EX, following along with it’s original counterpart, is a much more forgiving vertical shump, when compared to say, the infamous Touhou series by ZUN. Before I get into how easily someone can get into the game, here’s a little bit on the game- Super Galaxy Squadron EX is a remastering and rebuild of Super Galaxy Squadron. In both games, a truce

Plants Vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 | Review

Posted on February 22, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Plants Vs Zombie Garden Warfare 2
Popcap’s long-running feud between photosynthesizing plants and armies of the undead returns to the 8th generation of consoles in Plants Vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 for Windows PC, Xbox One and Windows PC. With a little under two years between backyard brawls should players revive their interest in this team-based shooter based upon a mobile game? After playing the Xbox One version for several hours I’m ready to rate Electronic Art’s latest title.

Word Puzzles by POWGI | Review

Posted on February 19, 2016 by Jason Nason

I enjoy puzzle games, though most of my puzzle solving comes from puzzles built into other game genres. From problem solving and deduction like the Ace Atorney games, or figuring out a logic puzzle in Resident Evil, puzzles are usually relegated to mini-games in other titles. With Word Puzzles by POWGI for the Wii U and 3DS, they take centre stage. Word Puzzles by POWGI is a bare bones word puzzle game. The game has a very simple presentation, with minimalistic visuals and some subtle background music to keep you going. The game has a very black and white look

Game Reviews Done Quick: Crypt of the Necrodancer

Posted on February 19, 2016 by Kyle Scarboro

Crypt of the Necrodancer is *breathe* Hardcore, Turn-based, Rogue-like, Dungeon-crawling, Rhythm-based game. *exhaaaallleeee* This game has you battling your way through a crypt full of smooth groovin, high flyin, street jivin, monsters ranging from skeletons, zombies, bats, dragons, and more. Crypt of the Necrodancer is a game that clearly had a great idea for a game and then they tacked on a story. Usually that is not the way to go, but this game offers a lot in such a small package that it is hardly the focal point.

Fortified Does Tower Defense Right

Posted on February 17, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Fortified is a new third person shooter tower defense hybrid from developer Clapfoot. It’s a tale as old as sci-fi – Martians are invading! They want something from us, and only a small group of American 1950s stereotypes can help save us! The US government has recruited a rocket scientist, a secret agent, a space-man, and a captain to fight against hordes of aliens in an attempt to defend the Earth! Or at least, the rocket ship that will save the earth.  This will be a familiar formula to anyone who has played Orcs Must Die: you start on a

Street Fighter V | Review

Posted on February 16, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

Street Fighter V
Review by special guest editor: Robyn Robo Almost exactly 7 years since Street Fighter IV came out for PS3, Xbox and Windows, Street Fighter V has released. With support for only two platforms at launch, PS4 and Windows, this is a more limited release. SteamOS support is coming “this spring” apparently. Sorry Xbox gamers, I don’t see anything planned yet for you. Unlike the version heck of the last release with Super, Ultra and Arcade Editions, this is going to be a unified online platform with players on any system able to match anyone. Considering the time between releases, and with

Final Fantasy Explorers | Review

Posted on February 11, 2016 by Jason Nason

Any game is invariably going to be compared to its predecessors, or in lack thereof at least to other games in same genre. The same way that a sports title will never be judged purely on it’s own without comparison to previous iterations of the series, it’s hard not to compare Final Fantasy Explorers to other Final Fantasy titles. Or Monster Hunter. I got a late start into the world of Monster Hunter, diving into Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for the Nintendo 3DS a full three years after its release. Coming into Final Fantasy Explorers I had no idea how

Posted on February 11, 2016 by Erika

Gravity Rush Remastered
Flying onto the Playstation 4, Gravity Rush Remastered brings a fresh look to the gravity defying 2012 PS Vita game. After gaining control of the female protagonist she realizes that has no memories and finds herself next to a mysterious cat. After exploring her way about, a man drops down grabbing her for help save his son

Megadimension Neptunia VII | Review

Posted on February 11, 2016 by Rae Michelle Richards

The Hyperdimension Neptunia franchise has kept my interest for the past seven years thanks to creative writing, absolutely adorable characters, clever tongue-in-cheek lines and an intriguing battle system. With the latest adventure, Megadimension Neptunia V.II (that’s Vee two not “version 2”) the folks at Compile Heart have done an excellent job retaining what has made the series so great, while adding twists to the established formula with some new breakout characters as the icing on the Nep Nep cake. Main characters (known as CPUs) in Megadimension Neptunia V.II represent consoles from the seventh generation (think Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii), just as

Darkest Dungeon: “There Can Be No Bravery Without Madness!”

Posted on February 5, 2016 by Kyle Scarboro

Darkest Dungeon is the birth child of indie game developers Chris Bourassa and Tyler Sigman with the help of their studio, Red Hook Studios. This is their first game and they are coming out of the gate strong! Darkest Dungeon is a Kickstarter funded, Roguelike Gothic RPG, and was successfully funded back in February 2014 and earned over $300,000 when only asked for $75,000. It is quite impressive to see what a group can come up with when they do not have large pockets to work with. A year later on February 3rd, 2015, Darkest Dungeon Early Access was launched on

Crazy Train | Review

Posted on February 4, 2016 by Jason Nason

I must say that I really appreciate developers who are still supporting DSiWare. Sure the Nintendo DSi is considered an old system now, what with the 3DS/3DS XL and New3DS on the market, plus the eventual release of the mysterious NX, but there are millions of people who own a DSi. Nearly 40 million DSi/DSiXL units were sold worldwide though the systems lifespan, so there is clearly a base of users there. Crazy Train is the latest DSiWare title to hit the DSi Shop. And of course any DSiWare title can also be picked up in the 3DS eShop as

Slice It! | Review

Posted on January 28, 2016 by Jason Nason

Slice It! is a rather simple puzzle game with a very simple concept. It is also the latest game to make the move from free app in the app store to a paid eShop title for the Nintendo 3DS. And while the game does have it’s fair share of challenge and enjoyment, the $5.99 price tag feels a bit hefty for what is available for free on smartphones. But price aside, what is this game? Slice It! is geometric puzzle game where your goal is to slice up shapes into the desired number of pieces in a set number of

Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak the definitive review

Posted on January 22, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

A review by special guest editor Robyn Robo So it’s been a long time coming for the sequel to Homeworld & Homeworld 2, a solid 12 years and one bankruptcy in fact. When first published in 1999, Homeworld was a revolution in real time strategy, a fairly hot genre at the time being just over a year since the release of the original StarCraft., This game, although being created by much of the original team behind Homeworld, wasn’t originally going to be an official sequel, but rather a game titled ‘Hardware: Shipbreakers’. The game has been in development for five
