Capcom’s surprise reveal of Resident Evil 7 has paid off as the developer / publisher has announced the playable trial for the upcoming first person survival horror, titled Resident Evil 7: Beginning Hour was downloaded by over 2 million PlayStation Plus Subscribers within the first week of the demo’s release. Currently Resident Evil 7’s trial is only available on PS4, it may come to Xbox One eventually but Capcom has yet to confirm the demo’s availability on other platforms.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard takes the series back to its horror roots with a twist – the entire game takes place from a first person perspective. Unlike the last few entries in the franchise (the Revelations Sub-series aside) have focused primarily on action set pieces and an increasingly complicated plot line that has spanned six main titles throughout the last twenty years. When this new take on Resident Evil is released next January the entire game can be played on Sony’s upcoming VR headset, PlayStation VR.

Prior to Resi 7’s unveiling some fans were hoping that this game would reboot the tangled interlocking narrative mess that have dragged down games like Resident Evil 6. In their press-release announcing the download numbers for the Beginning Hour trial clearly picks up where RE6 left off. Here is a quote from their release:

“Set in modern day rural America and taking place after the dramatic events of Resident Evil® 6, players experience the terror directly from the first person perspective.Resident Evil 7 embodies the series’ signature gameplay elements of exploration and tense atmosphere that first coined “survival horror” some twenty years ago; meanwhile, a complete refresh of gameplay systems simultaneously propels the survival horror experience to the next level.”

Resident Evil 7 will be released on Windows PC, Xbox One and PS4 on January 24th 2017.
