Capcom’s recent crop of games, namely Street Fighter X Tekken and Operation Raccoon City haven’t exactly lived up to lofty expectations, either financially or critically depending on the game that you are talking about. With the news that DMC: Devil May Cry has been delayed until 2013, how can the developer turn things around? Capcom Chairman, Kenzo Tsujimoto believes he has the answer.

Speaking during Capcom’s press briefing for their 2011 financial report Tsujimoto talked about the prospect of speeding up development time. Given that games like DMC required a five year development time, lasting what would have been an entire console generation just 10 years ago, I can certainly see why Capcom would want to speed up development.

During the event he said:

“Speeding up development will probably raise the cost,” he said. “But creating quality content will be vital to Capcom’s ability to survive by overcoming intense global competition. We will make substantial investments to develop this content.”

Do you think that Capcom’s new focus on speeding up development will help their games succeed? My gut reaction is that a faster development time will mean a rushed and potentially buggy product. That is, unless they decided to invest more $ into their games.
