The Best Things Come In Small Packages! That’s the tagline for the upcoming Nintendo 3DS game. The game was just released in demo form before the weekend, and we had a chance to get out hands on this small package.

Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX is a 3D rhythm action game starring the world’s most famous virtual singer Hatsune Miku. Project Mirai DX features 48 full length versions of fan-favorite songs with multiple play styles and game modes that people of any age or skill level can enjoy. Join the Miku phenomenon by expressing yourself through fun creative tools, sharing your cute customizations, and experiencing some of the best music from the world’s favorite digital diva!

So packed in the demo are two songs, which can be played in either button or stylus style. You can also play through three difficulties for these two songs so really there is about twelve different options when you factor in the different play styles and difficulties. It seems that so far that the songs and the look of the game are what will make it fun.

Don’t get me wrong, the actual gameplay is pretty good so far. One thing that makes the game a challenge, and makes one have to rely on the actual rhythm of the song more, is that the timeline of the song isn’t a straight line. The line moves around, sometimes in circles. So that can make it a bit tricky. Of course this does add to the challenge.

One thing that I didn’t like so far was the sound that accompanies each button press or stylus tap. Sure the songs are nice, but each time you tap or swipe the action is accompanied by a cymbal hit. There is no options menu in the demo, so I can only hope that this can be disabled in the full release.
