Miitomo Launches in Japan March 17th

Posted on March 11, 2016 by Jason Nason

Nintendo announced late Thursday via Twitter that they will roll out Miitomo in Japan next week. The app will launch for iOS and Android.

Miitomo is a free-to-start social experience that lets you spark conversations with your friends in a whole new way and uses Nintendo’s Mii characters, which first debuted with the launch of Wii Sports in 2006. More than 200 million Mii characters currently exist across Nintendo systems worldwide. To get started, users can quickly create a Mii character, customizing its facial features, eyes, hair, as well as voice and personality. Users can also use the camera of their smartphone or tablet to snap a photo that will be translated into Mii form, or they can simply import their Mii from the Wii U or Nintendo 3DS systems using a QR Code.

The Grumpy Reaper | Review

Posted on March 11, 2016 by Jason Nason

Grumpy Reaper? Grumpy Gamer.

The Grumpy Reaper is kind of a hard game to peg. On the surface it looks like it could be a pretty fun game, however once I started to play it there were things that nagged at me.

In the game you take on the role of Grumpy, a gardener I think. Most of the story introduction is done though slides, and they were somewhat tough to follow. I got the gist of the plot of the game through the online description, though to be honest the story doesn’t really matter that much.

Here is the plot: Death’s granddaughter has stolen the keys to the Underworld to unleash creatures on the world! Take on the role of Grumpy, mow the lawn and find the lost keys to help Death solve this problem.

So you play as Grumpy and you have to mow the lawn in each level’s graveyard. Every level is a graveyard, or at least every level that I played was one. The goal of the game is to collect keys, and the way you complete each level is to cut all of the grass.

Blood Alloy: Reborn A good start but needs work

Posted on March 11, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

Review by: Brandon Hall

Blood Alloy: Reborn is a new early access game from Suppressive Fire Games. Its currently released in early access an introduction to the gameplay mechanics of a bigger game. Its tiny price tag of $13 is may put some people off, but it’s really just the start of a game. An early tutorial goes over just the basics of maneuvering and sliding, and leaves much open for interpretation. It also seems to be missing a story element altogether. The art style is great for any pixel art aficionado and the music is very well composed. But those seem to be the only real great points about this game as it exists now.

I made a great mistake by skipping the tutorial, and I paid for it. Skipping the tutorial may have been a bit cocky as I soon learned that I knew nothing about this game or its controls controls. After a lot of cursing and many screams of angst I swallowed my pride and loaded up the tutorial. To my amazement, or lack thereof, the tutorial was barebones with nothing more than flashing keys in the background prompting you towards the end of the section. I know it’s an early access game, but navigating the tutorial seems straightforward, yet failure results in an instant reset putting you at the last checkpoint. It was at this point that my frustration began to take hold as I felt less immersed in the game, pushing me away from enjoyment and more towards a sense of dread.

16 years later, Diablo 2 gets a patch, still no cow level.

Posted on March 11, 2016 by Fionna Schweit

No you did not die. You read that correctly. 16-year-old Diablo 2 is being patched by its developer Blizzard. 5 years after its last patch, and over 3 years after its sequel, Diablo 2 is set to get a new patch 1.14.  Old games sometimes get patches from their developers, but like the recent Nethack update, this one is quite a surprise.

Straight from Blizzard “This update focuses on system glitches introduced by modern operating systems, in related news, you can finally retire those old Mac PowerPCs. Included with the update is a shiny new installer for OSX.” additionally the post mentions cheating “We’ve also begun working to improve our cheat-detection and hack-prevention capabilities. There’s still work to be done, but we’re making improvements every day” as for why they are patching “There is still a large Diablo II community around the world, and we thank you for continuing to play and slay with us. This journey starts by making Diablo II run on modern platforms, but it does not end there.”

So your getting OS bug patches, an update for the MAC launcher and maybe some anti-cheat stuff later on. Thats pretty awesome for a 16 year old game. The game must have a much more vibrant community than I realized, which is pretty awesome! Good job blizzard. I guess there is a cow level after all.
