Don’t Be Fooled By Overwatch Beta Scams

Posted on October 27, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Today marks the beginning of the closed Overwatch beta which was revealed via live stream a few weeks back. Blizzard has gone to great lengths to ensure that player’s chances of being scammed out of their precious battle.net accounts have been reduced by doing away with beta CD-Keys. Instead those selected for the very limited beta test of Blizzard’s upcoming First Person Shooter will have their account flagged automatically and an email sent to their account.

If you get an email from “Blizzard” asking for your login information or containing a “beta key” there’s a 100% that this is someone trying to phish your account.

Sadly none of us on staff got into the Overwatch Beta as of the publication of this article but on Twitch.TV there are several dozen people streaming their experience with the open beta along with over 134,000 people watching the game alongside them.

So just how you get into the closed Overwatch beta?

Q. How are Closed Beta participants selected?
A. Beta testers are chosen based on many factors, including your Battle.net region, when you signed up, your computer hardware specifications, and an element of luck. We are also inviting select journalists and community contributors from around the world on a case-by-case basis.

In regards to how they notify selected players Blizzard said:

If you are selected to participate in the Closed Beta, you will receive an invite via email. Invites will always be sent to the email address associated with your Battle.net account.

To help avoid phishing attempts, if you believe you’ve received an invite, it’s best to refrain from clicking on any links in the email(s) you receive. Instead, you can verify that your account has been granted a Closed Beta license in Battle.net Account Management.

If you’ve been selected for the Overwatch Beta and need to download the game you can follow these instructions, which Blizzard supplied:

Step 1: Download the Battle.net desktop app, if you haven’t already, and launch it.

Step 2: Log in using the Battle.net account that was flagged for Closed Beta access.

Step 3: Click the Overwatch icon, located in the left-hand nav bar of the Battle.net desktop app.

Step 4: Select your region from the drop-down menu, and click Install to begin the installation process.

Step 5: Once installed, click Play to begin!

Gran Turismo Sport Unveiled For PS4

Posted on October 27, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Polyphony Digital unveiled Gran Turismo Sport during their time at Sony’s Paris Game’s Week conference. The brief trailer shown at the press-event  showcased the history of auto racing all the way back to the days of black & white film!

Developers said that they didn’t just want to have upgraded audio or visual performance but wanted to change the way that people play racing titles. Within GT Sport there will be two simultaneously championships running – One is the Nation’s Cup where players race to represent their country and the other is the Manufacture’s Cup where the player represents their favorite automobile maker.

Players will be awarded their rewards for the in-game cups at the same time as real-world racers in the FIA! Also support for PlayStation VR was mentioned and surprisingly there may be a closed beta for Gran Turismo Sport next spring!

The next chapter in Kat’s adventures – Gravity Rush 2 – will be appearing on PlayStation 4 sometime next year and Studio Japan brought a brand new trailer showcasing some of the new gameplay mechanics that will help set Gravity Rush 2 apart from the 2012 original.

Here are some of the powers / changes outlined in the new trailer:

Gravity Manipulation – Kat’s original powers from GR1 allowing you to shift gravity.
Lunar Style – Allows Kat to become lighter.
Jupiter Style –  Allows Kat to become heavier and more powerful.
Destructible Environments  – Players can use gravity to destroy parts of the environment and then use them against enemies
Tag Team Boss Battles – Take on the series’ large scale boss battles with an A.I controlled partner

Still no release date for Gravity Rush 2 but this trailer has me really pumped for its release. As soon as we have more information we’ll bring it to you!

Horizon Zero Dawn Paris Games Walkthrough

Posted on October 27, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

During the Sony Paris Games Week media briefing developers from Guerrilla Games were on hand to show off about 8 minutes of brand new gameplay footage from the in-development title.

The on stage demonstration showed the main protagonist, Aloy, taking on yet another giant robot creature. As parts began to fly off of it Aloy was able to gather them and later presumably use them as crafting materials.

After the on-stage presentation a similar pre-recorded presentation was uploaded to Sony’s PlayStation YouTube account. Check it out:

Six Mysterious Additional Characters Coming To Street Fighter V

Posted on October 27, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Capcom’s Street Fighter V has been a staple at the last few huge press events and their showing at Paris Games Week was not a disappointment. Series producer Yoshinori Ono took the stage to remind players that Dhalism is playable on the showfloor.

But he also had one more big announcement before he left the stage – he confirmed that in addition to the game’s line-up of fighters six additional fighters will be added in the first year after the game’s launch. He also showed off a teaser image and encouraged fans to start speculating. All of these fighters can be earned through in-game currency called “fight money” rather than only through real world currency purchases.

Who do you think the next challenger will be?

Guitar Hero Live is a strong showing from a new studio

Posted on October 27, 2015 by Fionna Schweit

The first thing we need to get out of the way is that this is not a Harmonix game.  New developers Free Style Games have stepped up to the plate, and delivered the newest installment. So this is still guitar hero, but it’s not a Harmonix guitar hero. That being said, it’s still a great rhythm game, it  has plenty of new touches and only a few negative points that I might expect out of the first game of a new franchise.

Guitar hero basically invented the rhythm genre, so it should be no surprise that it can now re-invent it.  The biggest change to Guitar Hero Live is to the Guitar itself. It’s got six buttons now, three white and three black arranged in two rows. This is a radical change from the previous five brightly colored buttons. I found the new layout to be easier, requiring less movement of the hands, but more difficult to pick up than it previous incarnation. The games icons are arranged as such that you can see if you need to press the top or bottom row while strumming, but this means you now have to set left or right handed and makes the game less practical as a pass around party game.  It’s fairly clear on screen which button you need to press, but I still found myself missing a fair few notes as I moved from top row to bottom, as well as missing the combined notes where both top and bottom need to be held.  The buttons top and bottom rows have different textures which help distinguish them, and their natural feel means less looking at the fret board and more playing. Overall the guitar redesign is a HUGE win for this new Guitar Hero game, it pushes fresh life in to a series that got too bloated. One thing the controller does lack is a headphone jack, so there won’t be any silent rocking out at your house.

Final Fantasy XIV Patch 3.1 Release Date, Producer Q&A and Trailer

Posted on October 27, 2015 by Rae Michelle Richards

Square Enix’s first huge update for Final Fantasy XIV: Heavansward, patch 3.1, arrives on November 10th the publisher has announced. Alongside the announcement of the release date Square also provided a Q & A during the most recent Letter From The Producer Live and a very informative 7 minute trailer giving players a rundown of everything that will be included in 3.1!

Patch 3.1 As Goes Light So Goes Darkness brings with it a lot of brand new content. The story threads left hanging after the completion of FFXIV: Heavansward will be continued in the new main story quests,  New exploratory missions for free-companies (guilds) will be available, the first of which is known as The Diadem.  One brand new dungeon will be added for level 60 players as well – Saint Mociane’s Arboretum.   Possibly one of the most exciting additions, which we detailed previously when it was unveiled is the new 24 man raid known as the Void Ark.

Make sure you check out the trailer I’ve included in the embedded player before the jump. I’ve also included some of the details from the official Q&A thread from the Letters From The Producer Live that I thought would be of interest for returning players. I know that I’ll be re-subbing for the new raid content, and hey new story quests are always welcomed 😀

If November 10th sounds familiar – it is also the same day that Fallout 4 and StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void are released. It’s going to be a big day for games!
