Sure, it’s not exactly the same and has a bit of a lighter feeling of sorts, but Rogue Legacy combines the randomness of classic “Rogue like” games and the side scrolling exploration of Metroidvania style Castlevania advetures. Eager as I am for a new Castlevania title like the DS and Symphony of the Night games, I dove into Rogue Legacy hoping for somewhat of the same feel and I’m having fun!

The biggest complaint I’ve heard about the game is how it’s more so a grind getting gold that you then use to choose parts of your keep to improve to level up. However the focus of the game also is the whole Legacy aspect of the title, meaning when your character dies you continue your legacy with a chosen heir. Each of the three choices you’re given after each death can potentially have unique features, such as various visual impairments or even some traits that work as a bonus. Check out the trailer after the break to see what I mean.

It’s true, the game can feel like a grind, but there is fun to be had here. You’ll probably get addicted for the first few hours at the least. I’ve been casually playing it since and I don’t regret picking it up. Rogue Legacy is availalbe on GOG.com and Steam! The main site also has some additional options. You can check that out here and even buy the game direct from the creators!
