The 4th Annual Canadian Videogame Awards will be taking place on Saturday in Vancouver, British Columbia, presented as part of Vancouver Fan Expo. The CVAs were created to honour and celebrate the “best and brightest” in Canadian videogame and feature games from big mainstream titles to smaller indie projects.
If you haven’t heard of the awards don’t worry, you’re not alone. While the annual VGAs which air on Spike every year are fairly well known (if mostly panned by video game fans) the Canadian awards aren’t as well known for one main reason – they aren’t televised. To get a taste of what you can expect from the show you can watch last year’s awards ceremony here.
The awards will be presented live at the Vancouver Convention Centre during Fan Expo Vanouver and will be hosted by Elias Toufexis. Toufexis has had dozens of roles in popular games such as the Assassin’s Creed series, the Splinter Cell Series and, most notably, as the lead character of Adam Jensen in Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
From watching last year’s presentation it seems the reason that the show isn’t televised could stem from the uninterested audience. The show seems to be done in banquet form, similar to the way you see the see in Hollywood with the celebrities eating dinner directly before the show. Hopefully with fans being able to purchase tickets to show at Fan Expo the energy at the 2013 Awards is much higher.
As with many awards there is a fan’s choice award in the Future Shop Game of the Year, though voting closed on Friday. In order to be eligible to be nominated games have to be produced in Canada. So big name series and games that may be well known can’t be nominated if they are produced in Japan, Europe or anywhere else. That’s the point of this being a Canadian video game awards show.
