Indie Royale Returns For Charity

Posted on May 16, 2012 by Andrew Minott

Indie Royale returns with another low-priced bundle of indie games for your indie pleasure, this time benefiting charities chosen by the developers. The Indie Royale Lightning Round All-Charity Pack comes with an incredibly long name, and the following assortment of video games: physics bubbler Osmos, real-life cheatfest B.U.T.T.O.N., rabbinical RPG The Shivah, and Blueberry Garden, which they describe as a “short experimental game about curiosity and exploration.”

Currently, the base price for the bundle is in the low $4 range, and as usual the price will fluctuate based on whether or not customers pay more than the minimum amount or not. If you pay more than $7 (or the equivalent of such in your local currency), you will also receive three bonus music albums: Jake Kaufman’s FX4, Disasterpeace’s Level, and 6955’s IN1ep.

All of the proceeds from this sale will go to benefit Amnesty International, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, ActionAid, and UNICEF.

Hello out there!  This is the first of a series of weekly mini-reviews for the DLC that is released each week for Rock Band.  As I am just starting these out, I’m open to comments and suggestions, if you guys want to see things in a different format or what have you.  I’d also like to brand these things with a catchy title, and I’m open to suggestions on that front too!  So thanks in advance for reading and if you have any comments, please leave them below in the comments section or feel free to email me at jesselord@brokenjoysticks.net.  Cool!  So without further ado, let’s get started!

Fray Beta Begins

Posted on May 16, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

Brain Candy has just announced that it is starting a beta for Fray, its upcoming squad based strategy game. People who preorder the game will get guaranteed access to the beta, an additional copy to give to a friend, and any XP gained during the beta will carry over into launch. However, the beta isn’t limited to those who preorder the game. Anyone can sign up here.

What is interesting about Fray is that it’s a turn based game where everyone’s orders play out in real time. That formula has made for many interesting and intense games ranging from the old Diplomacy board game to last year’s spectacular Frozen Synapse. As things stand, Fray looks like Frozen Synapse with (comparatively) pretty graphics.

That could turn out very well indeed. Read on for the trailer.Read More

Gears of War 3 Contest

Posted on May 16, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

We’ve decided to reboot our Gears of War 3 contest. In retrospect, starting such a contest in the first week of our existence was a bad call. Also, the requirements and the mountain of legalese were probably unhelpful.

Here is the new setup for the contest. We’ll give away 3 copies of Gears of War 3 once we’ve reached 500 likes on Facebook. After that number has been reached, people will have a few days to enter our drawing via our Facebook page. We will, naturally, make an announcement on the site with further details when that occurs.

The prizes will be three copies of Gears of War 3 for the Xbox 360. Two of these will be autographed by the good people at Epic Games. The only requirements for entry are that you must live in North America and you agree that we are not liable for any problems with shipping. Contrary to popular opinion, Broken Joysticks does not secretly control the US postal service. We’d also appreciate it if you were over 18, because I don’t want to receive any angry letters from outraged parents. I receive enough of those as is.

In case you’d like to know more about Gears of War 3, please check out Rae’s review for Team Xbox.

DustForce Giveaway

Posted on May 16, 2012 by Daniel Shannon

I don’t know about you, but I tend to procrastinate a lot. For instance, I’ve just started my spring cleaning. It probably won’t be finished until September.

In honor of my cleaning efforts, we’re giving away copies of the indie game DustForce, where you play as a really acrobatic janitor. There are 50 perilous levels to clean up, so I guess this counts as a hardcore janitor simulator. You can find steam codes for the game in our articles, Steam group, Facebook, or Twitter.

Mortal Kombat Vita | Review

Posted on May 16, 2012 by Rae Michelle Richards

Last year’s Mortal Kombat brought the series back from the brink of obscurity and almost self parody. In my opinion Nether Realm Studios not only gave the franchise a much needed shot in the arm by undoing several games worth of changes but made the whole thing more accessible to a whole new generation of fighting fans. Now a full year later can Nether Realm repeat their success with the first fully fledged Mortal Kombat title on a handheld?Read More
